❓Where should I hang my new Red #prayerplant ? πŸ™πŸ½ 🌿 Also,...

This lovely Red Maranta Leuconeura is one of the #newplants I received yesterday in the mail from an Etsy seller in San Diego.

Why they shipped ALL my herbs, plants, & and succulents completely soaked in water on a Friday with 2-day priority shipping, so that I got them 4 days later still totally saturated in water is beyond me! πŸ™„ πŸ˜–πŸ˜‘

Do NOT order plants from "Dose of Succulents" on Etsy unless you want to get plants that need emergency root rot prevention repots asap! πŸ˜‘ 🚫 https://www.etsy.com/shop/DoseofSucculents

However, this post is about my Prayer Plant, which thankfully likes being damp...

⚠️Please note, I'm new to leafy house plants but grow a ton of succulents! So give me your most advanced tips β€” I'm game! 😁

I HAVE 3⃣ PRAYER PLANT BEGINNER Q'S FOR YA!

1⃣ I'm trying to figure out exactly where to put it so I have attached some pictures of options...

It will definitely get enough direct light, I'm just not sure if one of the spots is a better pic.

2️⃣ Also, I'd like to know if it looks generally healthy or if there's any concerns I should be looking out for?

3⃣ And lastly, I bought hanging shelf thinking the 4-inch plant wouldn't be so tall.. But it is!

So, will it be okay with growing AROUND the metal Circle OR.... should I get a new hanging option for it?

Thank you Greg Plant Fam!

Options 2, she looks super healthy and I’m sure will love her new pot! Congratulations on your new plants and sorry about the roots of your succs 😣 sometimes sellers have great plants but have no idea how to ship safely. 😫 It had been documented that plants are aware when we touch them and don’t really like it but I wouldn’t let it stop you from enjoying stroking her leaves. It doesn’t harm her maybe just β€˜panic’ her haha. They do react well to being spoken with love so maybe try both at the same time to cancel each other out. πŸ˜… (totally what I do)
Looks healthy to me! Mine looks the same. They usually like baskets and will raise their leaves in the evening but lay them down during the day. They usually spread out a bit and trail downwards so I think that should be ok. As for touching the leaves… I always touch mine and it’s been fine. I have a green prayer plant and a red. Honestly the green one I got from my mom who got from her aunt more than 40yrs ago. In my opinion they are hard to kill and grow like crazy with decent light and moderate watering. I water just when the soil starts to get damp. Here’s my red I recently got I have the red in a west window and the green in an east. Both seem equally happy. If I was hanging it I’d go with option 2. Mine will eventually get a basket and hang but I’ve been waiting on my hubs forever and might end up buying a stud finder and trying to figure out how to hang hooks myself lol
Uuu right in the middle southwest is a great location
Option two. And she looks healthy!
I would say both options are good but to me option 2 looks better from a design perspective. The plant looks great. I would say it’s fine to touch the leaves, just be gentle and don’t force any unnatural movement. You are right they do like to stay moist however this does not mean soggy. I would give this plant a pebble tray/inside pot pebble to increase humidity. I probably water when it is partially dry. I also have mine in coco coir and soil which is a good light mix for these types of plants. Good luck :)
@lifeofplants

Thank you for these good tips! πŸ’š

When you say "inside pot pebbles" do you mean putting pebbles at the bottom of the pot for better humidity?

I also have a humidifier, so I was planning on using that if it dipped below 40% in the house. I'm familiar with the apple tree but don't really like the look of it for a hanging plant.

Thanks for mentioning the soil you use. πŸ‘πŸ½

I'm planning on making my own soil and I do like using coco coir in my mixes...

I was thinking of 50/50 coco coir and peat moss with a couple tablespoons each of compost, worm castings, and pumice.

Does this sound like something a prayer plant would like? πŸ™‚
@HoyaAddict I touch my plants only slightly too much 😳 only when I'm trying to figure out if they need water tho πŸ˜‚

BUT... supposedly my plants get serenaded all day by me! πŸ˜† 🎢

My boyfriend says I'm constantly humming random songs while I putz around the house tending to my plants - I guess I don't even notice how much I sing throughout the day. lol
@mal9 thank you for these great tips!

I'm wondering if the circular trellis will hinder her growth I'm not really worried if she climbs up it I just don't want to stunt her upward growth, if you know what I mean?

But if you're saying that these plants crawl instead of growing vertically then it shouldn't be a problem correct?
@KDkat3 thank you for the great tips!

I say get that stud finder and hang it yourself! πŸ™‚ πŸ™ŒπŸ½

I used to ask my boyfriend to do handyman stuff around house but then I realized that he hated it (only took me 8 out of 13 years to stop asking him.)

I realized, I don't have the patience to wait for his level of procrastination! πŸ˜†

So, I sat myself down with our toolbox, Google and YouTube and started figuring out how to do everything from fixing the flush valve on the toilet to mounting shelves or installing light fixtures. It's pretty rewarding actually! πŸ™‚
@roxyvivien Oh they must love that! They definitely love music and being talked to so that’s two in one 😁 I try to limit myself but tbh I can’t stop stroking haha
@roxyvivien I completely agree with @KDkat3 on this πŸ’―. I have mine placed in a southwest window. Mine are rattlesnake plants.
Option 2 looks perfect. Your Maranta is gorgeous.
I have mine in my kitchen with a pebble
tray, she seems quite happy in between an east and west windows.
Ugh it really is so awful the way shippers soak plants, they must not know it's an invitation for root rot. That and netting around roots, spongy plugs, rubber bands and goodness knows what else they use, poor plants, thankfully we can rescue them from these crappy growers.
I think it would be a good idea to start a hashtag for #unscrupuloussellers
Thank you for warning us @roxyvivien
@roxyvivien yes that all sounds good. By the pebbles in the pot I just mean put them in the bottom on a non drainage pot with the nursery pot of the plant on top. Then fill the pot with a little water.
That plant is gorgeous
I love the corner option! I don’t think she will@mond the metal ring!
I have the same prayer plant and he has really thrived being in my master bath. East facing window, I’m not sure if it’s the humidity twice a day from showers or that he only gets filtered water from the fridge but he blossoms constantly and the growth is unreal!
Good luck, she’s a beaut!
I would put it in the wood section of the south window so it gets light from both windows
@lifeofplants Ahhh, I see! I only grow succs, so I haven't had to do that before πŸ˜…

I'm repotting her in this nifty designer plastic pot. 😊

I got a set for her to grow into.

I guess I'll have to use the humidifier cause I'm not sure if a pebble tray will hold well on the hanging shelf, but Thank you for for the tips! β™₯
@mal9 Perfect! I accidentally got the best hanging shelf for her then πŸ˜‚ Thank you!
@HoyaAddict @lifeofplants @mal9 @KDkat3 @AstroMind @KikiGoldblatt @Sassylimey @bpark

It's rainy in LA today so the light doesn't look as bright as it usually is, but I think she likes her new soil, pot and elevated home away from the kitties 😸 lol

I put chopsticks in to hold her steady until she's more secure in the pot.

Now if only I could train my partner to open the blinds AND make the bed when he gets up after me! πŸ˜…

One more question, plant friends! πŸ™πŸ½ πŸ’š

The top layer of soil is dry after repotting her last night in my homemade premium mix of coco coir, compost & 1/8" pumice & some worm castings. πŸ™‚

πŸ’¦ Should I water her or wait longer?

With succulents I always wait 3-5 days but I know these plants don't like getting dry.
@lifeofplants wanted to share the hommade coco coir soil mix I used with ya since you're a fan of it too! πŸ™‚

2️⃣ Part Coco Coir
1⃣ Part Aged Organic Compost
1⃣ Part Pumice (1/8 inch)
βž• 2 Tbs Worm Castings

I'll report back how she like it! πŸ’š
@roxyvivien I like to wait a day or two. If it’s fresh soil I’m sure there’s enough moisture for her for a few days πŸ’š
Thank you! β™₯ πŸ™πŸ½ @HoyaAddict - Will do, Also it's pretty humid inside so that's extra insurance πŸ’šπŸ‘ŒπŸ½
Looks so pretty! Great job!
That looks great!! Nice job 🀩
