Should I repot my aloe to put him a deeper into the soil since he's a bit exposed? ๐คท๐ฝโโ๏ธ
BACKSTORY & INFO...
About 2 months ago I had to remove a bunch of outer leaves from my Aloe Crosby Prolific's due to an infection & the big thirps outbreak of 2022! ๐ ๐คฌ
I haven't had a lot of success with aloes in the past, which is weird cuz all other succulents like me a lot a lot.
I'm wondering if maybe that pink part of the bottom should not be exposed and if I should repot to arrange the soil higher up to protect it?
I know Aloe's go dormant in the winter but the days are starting to get longer and I worry that with more sun it might damage his delicate bottom. ๐ ๐

@roxyvivien oh and I really like the way your soil looks. Do you mix your own?
@YammieOf3 yes, I do make my own soil! ๐ค
I've experimented with a ton of high grade commercial succulent soils on the market, but I wasn't impressed as a stand alone mix... & besides every species has its own unique needs.
I still experiment w/diff soil aggregates using different particle sizes, ratios, and ingredients for different species.
I'm still learning!
There's a lot of science.... I have to go back to my HS AP Biology class references ๐ lol

@YammieOf3 BTW you have an impressive collection of various plants including a cacti, succs - and aloe.
Aloe's I don't fully understand yet...
Aeonium's, Crassula, and any chonky, Thick BB's succulents absolutely loves me... ๐
But there's some in between species that I just don't get yet ๐

@YammieOf3 OMG!, ๐your Agave blue glow is amazing!
I adopted mine from an iresponsible friend who got it as a swag goodie bag gift from a tequila brand event ๐...
My bb agave blue glow was kicking butt for a year, super crazy thick Roots he developed and a bunch of new leaves
.. But I knew I potted him in the not optimal soil and the wrong pot (glazed ceramic)
So, once winter came the first sign of possible fungus /rot I freaked out and decided to repot him. I know I should have done it in the fall , my bad! ๐
Lost a lot of the roots in the process (owner error) but I managed to save him from rot โhe did lose about four leaves in the process...
He's currently Semi-dormant just chilling...
I really really hope he makes it through into the next grow season ๐ค๐ผ
Any tips from the expert Agave outdoor container grower??! ๐๐

@roxyvivien I love making my own soil as well. I always keep my aloes in bright indirect sunlight.
@roxyvivien OMG you just cracked me up, ๐คฃ๐๐คฃ๐คฃ๐๐
with your description of your Aloe โ delicate bottom ; as Iโm visualizing a babyโs tiny tushy. Never thought about plants having a bottom per se! Too funny ๐
@gAnderson they will most likely go dormant if you grow outside, and more likely if the plant is not fully established (over 1-2 years old)
The seasonal light and temp changes are more drastic outside...
๐ฅถ It's the cold nights that really make the shift happen for most species!
My semprevivum, Agave, most of the cacti, and all the Kalanchoe are dormant rn outside as it gets sub 50 degrees many nights. (โ chilly for LA!) ๐

@Ms.Persnickety I'm full of #plantjokes (& dad jokes) ๐
@roxyvivien ok there. Im even newer to cacti an succulants than houseplants. Mine ARE inside thats prob the diff. An gets loads of light!
Okay internet... This is why getting correct well-researched info online takes so much work...
@YammieOf3 @KikiGoldblatt @gAnderson
Check out all the conflicting info about Aloe Crosby prolific & dormancy
Finally! Good info from someone ACTUALLY growing an Aloe Crosby Prolific! ๐๐ฝ๐ชด โ and it's outdoor/indoor container growing.
These nurseries and most monetized blogs will throw up info for clicks, and it's often nti researched at all.
I've read articles on monetized sites that were so obviously cut and pasted from another article online... SMH ๐
I do tend to trust growers you put actually photos of their plants on their site, they seem to have the most accurate care guide info online.
[edited to tag @fitsedum any thoughts on this post? I know we've discussed succulent dormancy before]

@gAnderson Totally! Your inside succs & cacti will keep flourishing with TLC all year if you give them what they like, usually a grow light during winter keeps em going strong! ๐ก ๐ ๐
Aloe Vera is also pretty diff than many of the other hardier varieties that are used in outdoor landscaping. Crosby Prolific is a Hybrid between Aloe x nobilis X Aloe humilis which are definitely full sun or light shade when outdoor plants.
Succulents are quite addictive! I wish you lots of joy and happiness growing them! ๐ ๐ฑ

@roxyvivien ya wen i get new things i try to look up info so i can properly take care of. But sometimes things contradict. Gets confusing. Is y i prefer asking u guys most time. These are wat i got in mail from succulant of mth club other day. Soooo tiny an cute!
This one is more of a Summer Dormant and Winter Dormant plant. Split season due to its hybrid nature. If itโs kept 70-75ยฐF, you wonโt have issues. You will see conflicting info on most because of their growth behavior. Itโs technically a succulent that canโt handle anything above 80 nor anything lower than 40. I do a lot of this research and I mark mine as WD/SD. If you see any of mine marked as AD/SD it Autumn Dormant/Spring Dormant. If you see a G instead of a D, it means Grower do I know how to treat it. I donโt fertilize unless it โs out of its dormancy even if I maintain its ideal temp and growing. I just leave it alone and fertilize when Iโm supposed to. Same with watering.
Iโve been noticing that quite a few I have are split dormancy. Many just donโt like being too hot or too cold. And we are pulling them from their place of origin which sometimes doesnโt change the plantโs growth cycle. USA Summers mean African Winters. Our Spring is their Autumn. That research step is greatly overlooked but highly necessary for plant success.

@fitsedum Thank you!!!! ๐๐ฝ Awesome info! ๐๐
I think I might have really messed up with this one from the beginning ๐...
I was still learning quite a bit when I got it.
I'm thinking of buying another one from the same seller and keeping it outside during spring & fall but bring it inside for summer and winter... I'm gonna science hack it, and see if it works! ๐

@gAnderson OMG ! TWINNING! ๐คโฅ๏ธ
I subscribed to the same succulent subscription service for a year, that's what got me really started on collecting... I stopped getting them in 2021
But many of the ones I received are now fully grown and thriving!
I found that the ID's they made & the care cards were pretty spot on - the information provided was good, I just wish they put an actual photo of the plant on the care card and not a drawing because it made it really difficult when I forgot which plant went with the care card & I had 30 of them! Lol
This was before I found Greg so it was quite a mess! ๐
