How To Care For Baby Succulents?
Iโm new to succulents. I donโt have any succulents nor have I taken care of any before. Iโve had some leaves that I tried rooting in just regular potting soil (the only thing I have) with perlite for a few weeks. And out of those, this little guy has rooted. What do I do? Do I keep it in the same shallow dish I had it? Or do I move to a different pot with succulent soil? How do I water it? I was wondering if you guys could help me figure this out? Any tips and tricks are welcomed! I donโt even know what kind of succulent this is, but Iโm excited to take care of it! I canโt believe it rooted! ๐ค๐ฟ๐ Thank you in advance!๐ #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #OrangeGrass #PropagationStation #SucculentLove #PlantTherapy #SucculentSquad #Succulents #NewGrowth hi @Artistic_Stoner! Do you think youโd be able to tell me how to take of this little guy? ๐

Hi there โบ๏ธ what cute lil guy.. is he about an inch big ? The hard part(for me) is over now that it has roots. If you have a 1-2inch terracotta pot Iโd put him in there with some succulent soil. Something that little probably will need water every 4-6 days or so, or when the pot is done dry. You can sorta tell when they need water, limp, shriveled or soft leaves & sometimes they lose their โshineโ. Keep him in a bright place but out of direct sun for now, dapple shade is okay too! I have these guys in a 1 inch & water them every 6-8 days cause they have been acclimated to the sun & their new pot. So maybe in about 2 weeks let up on the watering to about every 7 days. Hope this helps!! We gotta figure out what he is ๐ง
@OrangeGrass also, when you were trying to root it, how often did you water it ?
Boom! @Artistic_Stoner said it all. You got a little cutie there, I'm sure it will thrive.
@FairyFly thanks girl โบ๏ธ I see you got some new babies ๐ weโve fallen under the succulent curse, canโt stop bringing them home lol I just got 2 yesterday!
@Artistic_Stoner Yes, heโs roughly an inch all together, lol. Iโm so scared of handling him because heโs so tiny ๐ Iโm going to try to get him a 1-2 inch terracotta pot today. If not, heโll have to wait a couple of days, but Iโll definitely make sure to get him his tiny terracotta pot! Thank you so much for the information! I did notice that he seemed to want more water while the other ones that are not rooted are just chilling on dish, and I didnโt want to get everyone wet just because he needs water. But, I have been giving him water every 4 days or so just in the area where heโs situated which is so difficult in such a tiny space ๐
So far, Iโve touched the top of the soil to feel if itโs moist, and if it isnโt, I drip droplets on water on it ๐ I need to figure out how to get water in thereโฆ Your look adorable! ๐ฅฐ Mine has been on a bookshelf near an east facing window since November 1st. This guys rooted within a week but I didnโt understand that what I saw were roots, so I just continued to keep him in the dish, and itโs November 22nd today ๐ ๐ Should I move them somewhere else? They did get some morning sun, but itโs been so cloudy these days that they have not been getting any sun at all. Yeah, idk what kind of a succulent he is, but Iโm patient! Iโll wait for him to show me if no one can id him ๐ค
@FairyFly Thanks! Iโm so scared of loving him to death ๐คฃ although, I think Iโve done a good job at leaving him alone ๐
@Artistic_Stoner it really does become an addiction/obsession lol, be careful @OrangeGrass or your obsession is next lol. You sound like you've done everything right, especially since it seems happily growing. I'm sure it'll be fine where it was until you can get what you need for it. Succulents are very forgiving and don't mind a little neglect so, take your time and have fun with it. Your instincts seem on point.
If I have a number of little rooted babies I put a number of them in a shallow pot or even a plastic saucer. I use a light cactus mix with a sprinkle of vermiculite n top and water every few days. I feel the after insIsprinkle a cactus mix Andi focontainer . I often use a plasthem in a the in a shallow pot keeps the little roots just forming moi
@OrangeGrass you are absolutely on the right track! If they have already been getting some sun then keep them there, for the rooted one though, every week move him to where he gets maybe an hour more sun a day. Heโs going to love his new pot, in a couple weeks his roots will be established & then you just sit back & watch for the new growth(very good sign)โบ๏ธ you said you donโt have any succulents, so just a couple things my stubborn self has learned in 3 years: 1, terracotta is the best pots to make sure the plant doesnโt stay in wet soil cause itโs so porous. 2, regular potting soil & sometimes even commercial succulent soils donโt have enough inorganic for airflow & to dry out, retains a little too much water. 3, I like my top soil to be dry within 2 days 3 days max.. otherwise my worst enemy root/stem rot can happen lol. 4, itโs not mandatory but I like to put a filler in the bottom of the pot before the soil like small rocks, succulents have shallow root systems so adding a filler= less soil =less time to dry out if that makes sense.. hope any of this helps if you get into succulents ๐ค
@FairyFly absolutely agree, sheโs doing GREAT for a beginner!! Seriously, going on my third year & have 65+ now ๐
the obsession is real!
@Trixietrout No judgement here Donna, we all have those days !! Still wonderful for you to help ๐
@Trixietrout Hi Donna ๐ thank you for your response! I appreciate it. I donโt have vermiculite at the moment. I plan on getting some rocks from Amazon and adding it to the soil. I did understand what you were trying to say!
@Artistic_Stoner Thank you SO much for the info! I plan on getting some rocks from Amazon to add to the potting mix. Iโll order some pots too. I was wondering how the tiny plant was going to be okay in like a 2 inch pot which is whatโs readily available, but adding rocks to the bottom makes a lot of sense! Iโm getting a bunch of succulents from mountain crest gardens ๐ my obsessionโs already started
@OrangeGrass itโs my pleasure! Iโm truly so excited for you ๐คฉ please post pictures when you get them!! Make sure the rocks arenโt too little, i personally use pea gravel from Ace hardware, big enough to not compact & lets water pour right out! A bit more advice for newly bought, when you get them donโt immediately put them in the sun, those will have to gradually be introduced cause they will have been in a dark box & you donโt want to shock or burn it. I usually wait a couple days to repot after theyโve seen some light, I also wait 2 days after potting to water it to make sure if any roots were damaged they have time to heal. I know a lot of people like to pot a bunch together but in my experience every plant is different with light & watering needs so I tend to keep mine individually.. & one more thing, pot them in a pot only a bit bigger then what itโs in, bigger the pot the longer itโll take to dry out. Gosh Iโm so sorry I keep spewing stuff, I just keep remembering little things ๐คญ so youโve got the pots, & rocks down, what are you going to use for soil ?
@Artistic_Stoner I will show you my babies when they get hereโsuper excited, lol. Oh, thank you for sharing where you buy and what you buy. Thatโs honestly very helpful because I was feeling overwhelmed by just how many different kinds of rocks there are. Oh, I see. Iโll keep them away from ants windows for about a week after they get here. I have not been interested in arranging succulentsโIโm so new to succulents ๐ I just wanted to try growing some because they are so plump and tiny which makes them cute ๐ I have miracle grow (donโt judge me!) cactus, palm and citrus potting soilโฆ oh god, I feel like Iโve got the wrong soilโฆ ๐ญ
@Artistic_Stoner itโs not all green like that but it does look like that ๐
@OrangeGrass No judging on the soil, I use the same one! I only asked cause Iโd recommend adding perlite/pumice rocks/lava etc to it cause Iโve found it still holds too much moisture.. I added pumice & perlite to mine. Canโt wait to see them!! Thatโs how I started, loved how plump & more almost 3D they look compared to other types of plants, I also heard they were easy ๐
@OrangeGrass they get red on them when sun stressed..So maybe ?? Where did you even get this guy lololol. What I posted is a Crassula Money Maker
@Artistic_Stoner Ooh! Okay. That makes sense. I did notice that their regular potting soil also holds way too much moisture for my house which is quite humid and not so bright now that itโs gotten cloudy almost all day every day. So, the plants are taking a really long time to dry out even the tropical ones. Iโve just been ignoring my Zz, crown of thorns and money tree. Although, I think money tree will need some water soonโI checked the soil and it was quite dry, but definitely not the other two. Anyway, thank you for all your helpful tips! Iโll get pumice too. What are the ratios you use these stuff in? Are they actually easy to take care of? On a side note, Greg should make dms possible because Iโm going to have so many questions for you after I get my stuff ๐
@Artistic_Stoner oh, hereโs a pic of what it looks like. Idk why the leaves are a little dark looking but thatโs how it was when I got it, and it hasnโt changed.
@OrangeGrass yea Iโm having to not soak mine so much & often now that itโs getting cold, mine are also outside in a portable greenhouse but still dry time takes a bit longer so I can imagine it is for you too. Sunset at 5:30 is killing me! I do a ratio of 3:1:1, so 3 parts soil, 1 part pumice & 1 part perlite. No problems so far but if I see on the 3rd day itโs still damp I put it in front of a fan & that helps ! Man I said the same thing about DMs, I be bombarding peoples posts with comments ๐ but I am more then happy to help, my husband told me today I need to write an extensive succulent book or make videos lol. So ask away whenever you need ๐ Iโm serious, I really almost feel like you have a money maker, looks like mine before I pruned it. They can be difficult Iโve found, but changing my pots, soil, making sure top soil is dry no later then 3 days & keeping a watering journal, almost 5 months now no root rot! Iโve only lost 4 completely in the 65+ I have cause Iโm usually good at catching the signs. This is why I am going ham sandwich in every little detail for you, I DONT want anyone to struggle like I did, I wish I had someone to tell me instead of figuring it out myself lol. Sorry for the novel ๐ณ
