How To Care For Baby Succulents?

Iโ€™m new to succulents. I donโ€™t have any succulents nor have I taken care of any before. Iโ€™ve had some leaves that I tried rooting in just regular potting soil (the only thing I have) with perlite for a few weeks. And out of those, this little guy has rooted. What do I do? Do I keep it in the same shallow dish I had it? Or do I move to a different pot with succulent soil? How do I water it? I was wondering if you guys could help me figure this out? Any tips and tricks are welcomed! I donโ€™t even know what kind of succulent this is, but Iโ€™m excited to take care of it! I canโ€™t believe it rooted! ๐Ÿค—๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’• Thank you in advance!๐Ÿ’š #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #OrangeGrass #PropagationStation #SucculentLove #PlantTherapy #SucculentSquad #Succulents #NewGrowth hi @Artistic_Stoner! Do you think youโ€™d be able to tell me how to take of this little guy? ๐Ÿ‘€

Hi there โ˜บ๏ธ what cute lil guy.. is he about an inch big ? The hard part(for me) is over now that it has roots. If you have a 1-2inch terracotta pot Iโ€™d put him in there with some succulent soil. Something that little probably will need water every 4-6 days or so, or when the pot is done dry. You can sorta tell when they need water, limp, shriveled or soft leaves & sometimes they lose their โ€œshineโ€. Keep him in a bright place but out of direct sun for now, dapple shade is okay too! I have these guys in a 1 inch & water them every 6-8 days cause they have been acclimated to the sun & their new pot. So maybe in about 2 weeks let up on the watering to about every 7 days. Hope this helps!! We gotta figure out what he is ๐Ÿง
@OrangeGrass also, when you were trying to root it, how often did you water it ?
Boom! @Artistic_Stoner said it all. You got a little cutie there, I'm sure it will thrive.
@FairyFly thanks girl โ˜บ๏ธ I see you got some new babies ๐Ÿ‘€ weโ€™ve fallen under the succulent curse, canโ€™t stop bringing them home lol I just got 2 yesterday!
@Artistic_Stoner Yes, heโ€™s roughly an inch all together, lol. Iโ€™m so scared of handling him because heโ€™s so tiny ๐Ÿ˜‚ Iโ€™m going to try to get him a 1-2 inch terracotta pot today. If not, heโ€™ll have to wait a couple of days, but Iโ€™ll definitely make sure to get him his tiny terracotta pot! Thank you so much for the information! I did notice that he seemed to want more water while the other ones that are not rooted are just chilling on dish, and I didnโ€™t want to get everyone wet just because he needs water. But, I have been giving him water every 4 days or so just in the area where heโ€™s situated which is so difficult in such a tiny space ๐Ÿ˜… So far, Iโ€™ve touched the top of the soil to feel if itโ€™s moist, and if it isnโ€™t, I drip droplets on water on it ๐Ÿ˜‚ I need to figure out how to get water in thereโ€ฆ Your look adorable! ๐Ÿฅฐ Mine has been on a bookshelf near an east facing window since November 1st. This guys rooted within a week but I didnโ€™t understand that what I saw were roots, so I just continued to keep him in the dish, and itโ€™s November 22nd today ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ™ˆ Should I move them somewhere else? They did get some morning sun, but itโ€™s been so cloudy these days that they have not been getting any sun at all. Yeah, idk what kind of a succulent he is, but Iโ€™m patient! Iโ€™ll wait for him to show me if no one can id him ๐Ÿค—
@FairyFly Thanks! Iโ€™m so scared of loving him to death ๐Ÿคฃ although, I think Iโ€™ve done a good job at leaving him alone ๐Ÿ˜…
@Artistic_Stoner it really does become an addiction/obsession lol, be careful @OrangeGrass or your obsession is next lol. You sound like you've done everything right, especially since it seems happily growing. I'm sure it'll be fine where it was until you can get what you need for it. Succulents are very forgiving and don't mind a little neglect so, take your time and have fun with it. Your instincts seem on point.
If I have a number of little rooted babies I put a number of them in a shallow pot or even a plastic saucer. I use a light cactus mix with a sprinkle of vermiculite n top and water every few days. I feel the after insIsprinkle a cactus mix Andi focontainer . I often use a plasthem in a the in a shallow pot keeps the little roots just forming moi
I needed to edit
I was saying, I think the vermiculite keeps the little roots moist enough because they dry out really fast when the soil tiny.tiny.tiny. are theyโ€™re long enough to reach down into the cactus mix. They donโ€™t need as much, baby.
I have so much trouble with this whole site. I love Graig, but I canโ€™t even type in a message.
The above message is are so garbled nobody can probably understand what I was suggesting Understand what I was suggesting suggesting .๏ฟผ
@OrangeGrass you are absolutely on the right track! If they have already been getting some sun then keep them there, for the rooted one though, every week move him to where he gets maybe an hour more sun a day. Heโ€™s going to love his new pot, in a couple weeks his roots will be established & then you just sit back & watch for the new growth(very good sign)โ˜บ๏ธ you said you donโ€™t have any succulents, so just a couple things my stubborn self has learned in 3 years: 1, terracotta is the best pots to make sure the plant doesnโ€™t stay in wet soil cause itโ€™s so porous. 2, regular potting soil & sometimes even commercial succulent soils donโ€™t have enough inorganic for airflow & to dry out, retains a little too much water. 3, I like my top soil to be dry within 2 days 3 days max.. otherwise my worst enemy root/stem rot can happen lol. 4, itโ€™s not mandatory but I like to put a filler in the bottom of the pot before the soil like small rocks, succulents have shallow root systems so adding a filler= less soil =less time to dry out if that makes sense.. hope any of this helps if you get into succulents ๐Ÿค—
@FairyFly absolutely agree, sheโ€™s doing GREAT for a beginner!! Seriously, going on my third year & have 65+ now ๐Ÿ˜… the obsession is real!
@Trixietrout No judgement here Donna, we all have those days !! Still wonderful for you to help ๐Ÿ˜Œ
@Trixietrout Hi Donna ๐Ÿ‘‹ thank you for your response! I appreciate it. I donโ€™t have vermiculite at the moment. I plan on getting some rocks from Amazon and adding it to the soil. I did understand what you were trying to say!
@Artistic_Stoner Thank you SO much for the info! I plan on getting some rocks from Amazon to add to the potting mix. Iโ€™ll order some pots too. I was wondering how the tiny plant was going to be okay in like a 2 inch pot which is whatโ€™s readily available, but adding rocks to the bottom makes a lot of sense! Iโ€™m getting a bunch of succulents from mountain crest gardens ๐Ÿ˜‚ my obsessionโ€™s already started
At least it's one of the better obsessions to have lol!
@OrangeGrass itโ€™s my pleasure! Iโ€™m truly so excited for you ๐Ÿคฉ please post pictures when you get them!! Make sure the rocks arenโ€™t too little, i personally use pea gravel from Ace hardware, big enough to not compact & lets water pour right out! A bit more advice for newly bought, when you get them donโ€™t immediately put them in the sun, those will have to gradually be introduced cause they will have been in a dark box & you donโ€™t want to shock or burn it. I usually wait a couple days to repot after theyโ€™ve seen some light, I also wait 2 days after potting to water it to make sure if any roots were damaged they have time to heal. I know a lot of people like to pot a bunch together but in my experience every plant is different with light & watering needs so I tend to keep mine individually.. & one more thing, pot them in a pot only a bit bigger then what itโ€™s in, bigger the pot the longer itโ€™ll take to dry out. Gosh Iโ€™m so sorry I keep spewing stuff, I just keep remembering little things ๐Ÿคญ so youโ€™ve got the pots, & rocks down, what are you going to use for soil ?
Hey! Does he look like this ?? So hard to tell by your picture but you said it rooted in like a week, well this one of mine did too & looks oddly similar!
.
@Artistic_Stoner I will show you my babies when they get hereโ€”super excited, lol. Oh, thank you for sharing where you buy and what you buy. Thatโ€™s honestly very helpful because I was feeling overwhelmed by just how many different kinds of rocks there are. Oh, I see. Iโ€™ll keep them away from ants windows for about a week after they get here. I have not been interested in arranging succulentsโ€”Iโ€™m so new to succulents ๐Ÿ˜‚ I just wanted to try growing some because they are so plump and tiny which makes them cute ๐Ÿ’š I have miracle grow (donโ€™t judge me!) cactus, palm and citrus potting soilโ€ฆ oh god, I feel like Iโ€™ve got the wrong soilโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ˜ญ
@Artistic_Stoner itโ€™s not all green like that but it does look like that ๐Ÿ‘€
@OrangeGrass No judging on the soil, I use the same one! I only asked cause Iโ€™d recommend adding perlite/pumice rocks/lava etc to it cause Iโ€™ve found it still holds too much moisture.. I added pumice & perlite to mine. Canโ€™t wait to see them!! Thatโ€™s how I started, loved how plump & more almost 3D they look compared to other types of plants, I also heard they were easy ๐Ÿ˜‚
@OrangeGrass they get red on them when sun stressed..So maybe ?? Where did you even get this guy lololol. What I posted is a Crassula Money Maker
@Artistic_Stoner Ooh! Okay. That makes sense. I did notice that their regular potting soil also holds way too much moisture for my house which is quite humid and not so bright now that itโ€™s gotten cloudy almost all day every day. So, the plants are taking a really long time to dry out even the tropical ones. Iโ€™ve just been ignoring my Zz, crown of thorns and money tree. Although, I think money tree will need some water soonโ€”I checked the soil and it was quite dry, but definitely not the other two. Anyway, thank you for all your helpful tips! Iโ€™ll get pumice too. What are the ratios you use these stuff in? Are they actually easy to take care of? On a side note, Greg should make dms possible because Iโ€™m going to have so many questions for you after I get my stuff ๐Ÿ˜‚
@Artistic_Stoner oh, hereโ€™s a pic of what it looks like. Idk why the leaves are a little dark looking but thatโ€™s how it was when I got it, and it hasnโ€™t changed.
@OrangeGrass yea Iโ€™m having to not soak mine so much & often now that itโ€™s getting cold, mine are also outside in a portable greenhouse but still dry time takes a bit longer so I can imagine it is for you too. Sunset at 5:30 is killing me! I do a ratio of 3:1:1, so 3 parts soil, 1 part pumice & 1 part perlite. No problems so far but if I see on the 3rd day itโ€™s still damp I put it in front of a fan & that helps ! Man I said the same thing about DMs, I be bombarding peoples posts with comments ๐Ÿ˜‚ but I am more then happy to help, my husband told me today I need to write an extensive succulent book or make videos lol. So ask away whenever you need ๐Ÿ˜Œ Iโ€™m serious, I really almost feel like you have a money maker, looks like mine before I pruned it. They can be difficult Iโ€™ve found, but changing my pots, soil, making sure top soil is dry no later then 3 days & keeping a watering journal, almost 5 months now no root rot! Iโ€™ve only lost 4 completely in the 65+ I have cause Iโ€™m usually good at catching the signs. This is why I am going ham sandwich in every little detail for you, I DONT want anyone to struggle like I did, I wish I had someone to tell me instead of figuring it out myself lol. Sorry for the novel ๐Ÿ˜ณ
Donโ€™t they look similar in how they grow??
