Hello All,
This will be my second fern but I cannot keep it alive. It keeps shedding badly. Can someone give tips? #FernFriends #BostonFern #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #PlantTherapy
How well are you caring for it? Is it in direct light? Indirect? Too much water? Too little? Wrong soil? It looks okay to me and seems like it just had a lot of dead leaves at once, seeing as how many it has.
@FitBrowallia thanks Jonchel
@Fireplace I would think good care from what I’ve researched. I even spritz the leaves with water. It is thinning out from when I initially brought it home. It is in indirect sunlight.
Indirect sun works well with ferns. I used to have some behind my house but they froze away in the winter and never came back. Some like humidity. I say just keep doing what you’re doing for now. How often and much do you spray the leaves?
@Fireplace I spray it lightly every couple of days. I do a good water once a week. Enough water until it comes out the bottom.
Seems good. Just keep taking care of it. πŸ˜‰
Don’t give up.
I buy Boston Ferns every summer for my covered porches and they like humidity, sunlight, and lots of water in the evening. They are huge by the end of summer. Sadly, for me, I find them too messy to keep indoors due to shedding. I think the shedding is natural for these types of ferns. @CasualBonsai
@PlantHapppy do you water it everyday?I think I’m going to have to put it outside because of the shedding
@CasualBonsai anytime
@CasualBonsai These guys typically don't like direct sunlight and you're gonna want to keep the soil moist. They'll appreciate high humidity. If you're growing it outside put it in a shady area I however have mine indoors!
@CasualBonsai I buy them every year too. I live in the Midwest. Mine are outside, direct light the first half of the day, shade the rest of the day, and I water them AT LEAST every other day. They are usually quite root bound in the pots from the nursery, as they like it tight. But if you plan to try to keep it year round, you will want to thin/split it at some point before taking it inside for the Fall/Winter. If it's outside, mist it every day, and if it's over 85 degrees mist it twice per day.
@CasualBonsai Every other day and depending on how hot it gets, extreme heat, everyday.
@ToughSedeveria I live in Texas.
@PlantHapppy thank you
@UltraKoreanfir thank you
I live in Austin TX and water mine every other day and mist them daily in the summer. They seem to thrive unless they get direct sunlight. When it stays over 100 degrees I water and mist them daily.
@HortiKat thanks.
I got a $20 1.5 L humidifier off of amazon and mine have made a turnaround. Oklahoma humidity and sun was killing mine apparently. Also very new to ferns and struggling.
All the water
@CasualBonsai Im going through the same with my Boston. I know I have read β€œif” you’re lucky enough to have a bright bathroom is perfect environment for a Boston Fern. I was using a humidifier in the room I was keeping my Boston Fern and was doing awesome almost no shedding. However we have company here staying in that room and had to move her, and now she’s shedding a lot since she isn’t near the humidifier. I have been reading to give the Boston Fern an Epson salt bath - This lady posted β€œWe generally dip ours about every 3 weeks with regular watering in between. It also keeps them from shedding so much which means less cleanup”. This was from a website I bookmarked https://www.gracefullyhome.com/give-your-ferns-a-bath-with-epsom-salt/ (also this person uses a galvanized bucket to soak which you can use any kind of bucket ).
