Marimo Moss Ball Pet π¦ I feel like this is the 2025 equivalent of a pet rock. @nellz4estfairyz usually they get a tank of their own, with other easy to grow epiphytic plants like Anubias or Java Fern, or in a hanging basket. Smaller ones can be found in little packets, often near the betta or shrimpies.
While you're there, how about bringing home a crypt or anubias as well? They do well in a cloche and are practically impossible to overwater. Aquasoil is the best choice for crypts, and anubias grows best on wood and stone. Another expensive alternative to anubias are buce. [just leave them out of any direct sun]

@Plants_Galore you can find them online on various sites dedicated to moss balls, also on Amazon I believe. This one was living at my local coffe shop for the past 6 months or more. It was for sale for $36. I just couldnβt bring myself to spend that on what looks like a ball of algae. But the coffee shop is changing owners at the end of the month and the current owner put all of the merchandise at 75% off! So, I couldnβt say no! lol π sometimes itβs just meant to be (that you need another plant!). πͺ΄
@nellz4estfairyz It was fate!
@Plants_Galore Iβm willing to bet this is where mine came from originally. It looks identical and I think I remember the coffee shop calling it a moss amigo. https://mossamigos.com/products/classic-chico-amigo
@Plants_Galore exactly! Just like most of my other plants, we were meant to be together. ππͺ΄π¦
@nellz4estfairyz it does look identical! Will the ball of algae ever produce another ball of algae
@Plants_Galore I was reading about them. You can propagate them by division but typically they will just grow slightly bigger over a long period of time.
@nellz4estfairyz oooh that does make sense
@nellz4estfairyz $36???!!! Damn that 75% off made it as much as it would cost you to set one up yourself and a bigger ball too! But do whatever. It's adorable anyway
@Plants_Galore you tried local fish shops? Especially those selling shrimp, or specialising in them. They usually have some nice, big round ones
@Araceae I know right! $36 is crazy. Thank you for the tip about the fish stores. I live in a small town and we donβt actually have any fish or pet stores local, but there is a pet store with a large fish section about 30 minutes away from me. Iβve never noticed moss balls there but they do have other aquarium plants, and axolotls, so maybe moss balls are hiding somewhere close by. π
@Araceae wow! I never realized the market for freshwater underwater plants! I like the ones that can be grown on a rock. π
@Araceae and I love the cloche idea. I actually placed a fern in a homemade cloche or sorts yesterday, trying to rehab the fern. Itβs a giant olactic cheese ball container. π€£
@TheConservator I know, hundreds of years life span for a plant is pretty cool. I will leave this moss ball to my children or their children in my will someday!!! π€£π€£π€£
@MusicalRedmint thank you. π itβs just a fun cute little thing.
@WelsomeRhodotus yeah itβs cute and adds water to the ambience of the room where ever you display it. And they donβt need or like much sun so you can place them around the room, not near a window.
@nellz4estfairyz π€£π€£π€£ A cinder block? Lol That's awesome!
@princesspitstop π€ͺ
@princesspitstop I also had a pet βsnakeβ. It was a crocheted yarn chain, with a head crocheted out of yarn as well. My dad made me a wood box with a hole in the top and a removable lid to keep our snake in. My best friend and I were probably about 8 years old and whenever we would see each other we would crochet long sections of chain to add to our pet snake. π no recollection of how long he got but it must have been hundreds of feet! π€£
@Araceae so moss ball update. I started thinking I might be able to get some cheap moss balls at the pet store and make some jars at home for the kids to keep as pets, but I called the pet store and they donβt carry real moss balls! So I will have to either order or I will have to spend the spring and summer checking around and the fish hatcheries around here. My husband visits them occasionally to stock the ponds with helpful fish and to buy koi. (He stocked his momβs pond with catfish and those things are monsters! π€£)
@nellz4estfairyz That is so cool! I love that!

#MossBallerinas here is another site I looked at not just the βballsβ https://www.mossartistry.com/products/large-marimo-moss-ball , and the first site which it hella cute! https://mossamigos.com/shop
@nellz4estfairyz lol I canβt believe this is a thing now! πππ Meanwhile I love that Kohe is being kept company by a handsome rooster π
Late to the party, but happy to be here. The moss balls are the cutest. I got a couple at PetSmart to keep my betta boi company, but you canβt really see them because my (temporary) tank is in its βbrownβ era. I donβt know why they are so compelling, but I think I need one at work for my desk. π€£π€£π€£ Aquatic plants are dangerous. Step one buy all the plants, step two buy all the fish. Step three water the plant with the fishy water and then get more tanks. πππ Step four hubby has to choose and is now talking to fish and plants. π€£π€£π€£π€£
@teacher12 eeek!!! You are so right Laura! Theyβre totally addictingβ¦ I got a hat for my ball π€©π« bhahaha! I want Madagascar lace and all the things now. I was roaming through the app just checking to see what's going on and I happened upon this conversation about moss balls and cloches. Truth be told I'd never heard of either but now my curiosity has gotten the better of me and I am wanting to learn more, if any one is willing to take the time to teach me how to get started.
@NewMingthing40 hi! π so Iβm new to Marimo Moss Balls, but I love them! They are cute and easy to take care of of. Once you get your hands on one, it will need to live in a water vessel of some sort with some cool, water, maybe some pebbles, and keep it out of direct sun and away from heat! They like to be cool. The water needs to be changed 1x per week and they grow slow! lol π as for as the cloche I donβt know as much about that, except that itβs kinda like a terrarium, keeping moisture in. maybe @Araceae would be willing to expand on that a little further?
@NewMingthing40 I wonder if you made a new post asking a question, regarding how to set up a cloche, and what types of plants do well, and tag the terrarium and/or carnivorous plant groups like #Terrarium #cloche #CarnivorousPlants #CarnivorousClub *im not sure, but I think maybe some carnivorous plants can grow in terrariums.
@NewMingthing40 in general a cloche is like a terrarium, but with a base of either glass or wood, ceramic or sometimes hard plastic, and a glass bell top. Some are specifically designed for plants, with small holes near the top to facilitate airflow and a waterproof base. I believe some have a semi-hydro/hydro feature as well. First photo is a Bioloark Bio Bottle MH80, an example of a plant-specific one. Second is one meant for decor, notice the difference in quality for plants. Third is a normal Bioloark Bubble Cup 4, this one is a terrarium jar. Notice how the Bubble Cup 4 has a cookie-jar kind of shape instead. Despite their differences, all are suitable for growing terrarium and emersed aquatic plants, although if it has a wooden base make sure it has been waterproofed. Note that its sometimes best not to plant directly into the container, unless you're going for a terrarium, as these containers have no drainage. Hope this clears any confusion.
@nellz4estfairyz yes, i've seen CPs in terrarium, but i think a vivarium/paludarium setting would showcase them better! [i've seen them in riparium settings as well]
