@PlantPeach Congratulations people would kill to have a beautiful string of pearls like this . Iβm a bit confused as to how one cutting would turn to this magnificent size . Oh and how long did it take ? Please share to help others such as me
@ILoveMyPlants Hii, thank you so much. Yep it was just one cutting taken from my friends SOP which I coiled into some soil so it could root.
I then let it grow until it started to spill over the edges of the pot and everytime it did I recoiled it up and made sure her strings were touching the soil.
In the wild they grow across the ground and naturally sprawl rather than dangle down. So I just kept coiling her back up into the soil and letting her grow back out of the pot again.
Then I upsized her pot when she was rootbound and did the same thing again.
It has meant that she has managed to create lots of rooting points and growth points and been able to grow bushier and stronger.
I've only had her dangling recently because she's got too long to keep her fully coiled up in this pot.
From the cutting to her now it's taken around 2 years and I've had her in or near a south facing window (im in the UK) some people argue this is too hot for them and can burn them etc but from my experience it's been what my plant has preferred βΊοΈ

@PlantPeach WOW. Excellent job!! π€©π€© π π₯³ SoP is also one of my favorite plants, but was also one of the plants I unalived the most. π but! my recent guy is chugging along now after I corrected many mistakes π

The brightest of the bright, sunniest spot, being one of those that I neglected before.
What kind of soil do you have yours in? And when you do coil, and they have rooted, do you have to snip the individual nodes apart? Or do they just start growing new vines from each node?

@PlantPeach You clearly have THE touch! π Congratulations! I had a beautiful one once that got cocky with, divided it to turn into multiple plants, and eventually repotted into a pot that was too deep and no bueno. Your story makes me want to try again. Maybe. π
@DreamMachine Thank you π, That's great hopefully your plant will continue to grow. I agree with it being in a bright spot they just seem to love the sun.
I have mine in a soil mixture that I make myself that I put all my cacti and succulents in it's made up of mainly (2 scoops of generic soil whatever you can get your hands on, 2 scoops of perlite, 3 scoops of pumice, 1 scoop of orchid bark, 1 scoop of charcoal)
And no snipping necessary, they will just start growing new vines. Not every node will but some will. I'll see if I can attach a pic of where mine has done it so you can see. ....

@DreamMachine and if any bits ever happen to fall off just pop them back on top. My dog is a nightmare for just running round the house and bumping into the plants. I've had a couple of the strings get knocked off so I've just coiled them back on top to let them just root back in. π
@debbiedo you definitely should try again!! It's worth it ππ
@PlantPeach good job!!!π. Your SoP is stunning π€©. Just a word of caution now that sheβs dangling, rather than being closely attached to soil. Iβve found direct sun can affect the long strands more harshly than when the pearls are closer to soil. Monitor the intensity and duration of direct sun especially now that itβs summer, you may want to limit the βοΈ time. And donβt discount that the table absorbs heat and reflective light too. I lost several strands on a few of mine that were used to southwest sunshine in the afternoon but as the angle of the sun changed and got more early afternoon sun, it was too much. Strands on the table got sunburned while those on the other side were fine.
@MariansOasis thank you π, that's really helpful. I'll make sure to keep an eye especially as it's been getting hotter
@PlantPeach
I'm in love with Pippa!
I'm in love with Pippa!
@PlantPeach thank you!! Yes I do the same with bits that get accidentally knocked off βΊοΈ And my mix is quite similar π π₯³ If I remember after work Iβll snap a pic!
@DreamMachine oooh yes doo, I'd love to see
@Renimon20 Hii, The plant just looks like this. It's called a String of Pearls or (Curio rowleyanus/ Senecio rowleyanus/ if you want to use it's botanical name) π
@PlantPeach Thanks a bunch I never realized they were creepers . Fantastic job
@PlantPeach thatβs an amazing string of pearls! One of my (many) wishlist plants. I have a string of turtles thatβs surviving nicely (I wouldnβt say thriving) in an east window but perhaps I should try a south facing window like yours!
@SlinkyFivespot8 aww thank you so much. I also have a string of turtles but I actually keep that one in a north facing window so where it only receives direct morning sun. I've not had it super long but since being in the north window it has been doing much better. I've tried it in all types of light but it seems to struggle more in my house when it's in more light.
