How do I repot a rootbound monstera?
#rootbound much? How do I even repot this? The roots are so hard and conformed to the old grow pot.
This plant also has black rot. I unwillingly trimmed all the affected leaves off trying to save it.
Meanwhile it also has new growth. Ha!

You don't have to fully untangle roots when you repot, which is great. But obviously you have to do it some here π³
I like to make sure mine is moist and kind of shake it to see who moves and get the dirt to shake out. You can also use a chopstick or something to get in tight spaces. I also like to squeeze the roots together to move them around without yanking.

@PlantMompy They are not budging AT ALL. I saw someone else post that they soak the thing until it softens. That seems to be helping a bit. Iβve untangled some of the biggest bad boys. But the top is still pretty solid. How much untangling is enough?
Personally, I do let it get pretty soaked but wasn't sure if that was a good idea with black rot (not something I've dealt with)
Untangling the bottom enough that they can spread out in the pot, so the bottom few inches. You just want to know when they grow they can grow away from one another.
I haven't done it before, but a lot of people that want to keep a plant in the same pot trim/cut the roots π«£

@PlantMompy Thanks! Thatβs really helpful. Iβm like you, it makes more sense to me to repot and let the roots spread out than to trim them. Unless theyβre rotting, of course.
@Monsteralover26 Once I got the roots untangled I gave her a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water, per your suggestion. Fingers crossed it will help with the black rot! Thanks!
@PlantMompy Finally got her untangled and in her new 10β home π Looks silly with just the 2 leaves, but the potential under the soil is MONSTER-OUS. π
Update: π spotted some fresh nubbins on this 2-week-old repotted #Monstera ! π Feeling proud and optimistic! #newleaf #NewGrowth #BeforeAndAfter
