I’m trying a TOMATO TOWER! 😁

This is a spot where I’m smothering some bindweed with weed barrier. I want to leave it down at least another year so this is something to put there in the meantime πŸ…β˜€οΈ

Its not the MOST beautiful πŸ˜‚ But I figure it’ll be a fun way to try different spots in the yard before we build raised beds πŸͺ΄

Plants go in tomorrow πŸ™Œ What veggies are you all planting this year??

@debbiedo hi Debbie that looks great: it’s is unique and beautiful. I love ❀️ what you have done . Very nice πŸ‘πŸ½send me some tomatoes.once they’re good n green πŸ˜ŠπŸ…I know they are going to be delicious. πŸ˜‹I haven’t started yet. Don’t know if I’ll do them this year! Best of luck to you my friend πŸ‘πŸ½ you got this πŸ«ΆπŸ½πŸ’•
Ooooh, I like that! Very creative.

These are most of my plants I planted this year.

Tomatoes- 3 varieties
Zucchini
Cucumber- to eat and make pickles
Brown onion
Purple onion
Spring onions
Radishes
Beets
Raspberries
Blueberries
Blackberries
Parsley
Basil
Cilantro
Mint- on my patio totally separate because it's invasive
Dill
Oregano
Thyme
Marjoran
Asparagus
Pumpkins
Cantelope
Watermelons- 2 varieties
Butternut squash
Delicate squash
Artichoke
Sweet corn
Bell peppers
Sweet peppers
Cayanne peppers
Carrots
Lettuce
Strawberries

Marigolds to keep those garden pests away. Don't forget those companion plants to deter bad bugs!

Herbs are great for that too!!

Potatoes later on. I'm sure I forgot some that I planted but it's filling in nicely and some of my newcomer seeds are sprouting. I can't wait to see it all filled in. I love my summer gardens.

My goal this year is canning. Pasta sauce, pickles. All kind of things. I should have plenty to can and it feels so good to pull ingredients from your own garden.

The photos are some of it.
I have 7 4X8 foot planters. Then we plowed some of the field so there is roughly 100x4 feet plowed. That's where I have my melons, artichokes, corn etc planted. It doesn't look like much yet they are still babies.
Wait Home Depot has red buckets??!!!!! πŸ‘€πŸ˜³β€οΈ
@Preciousplants1 Thank you Sherri! It’s been awhile since I’ve planted veggies, so we’ll see! 🀞🏻
@SuperbRaspfern Shannon what an amazing garden you’ve got going! We haven’t had a big garden for over 20 years, but I’m getting the bug again πŸ€— Your pictures are inspirational ❀️
@Boymom-plantmom No, these are just the standard orange buckets…the cheapest I could find πŸ˜πŸ‘πŸ»
@SuperbRaspfern My husband wants to try cantaloupe this year. I have a neighbor who sells veggie plants she has started (I’ll be buying some tomorrow), and she suggested starting some seeds right now rather than try to find plants (because most of them come in plastic pots and the plants don’t like being moved). What do you suggest?
@debbiedo ooh very nice Debbie!! It reminds me of the bean or pea teepee I usually make for my daughter, and what my mother made for me when I was little. This year I’m growing my grandmothers black bamboo to harvest for canes to use in my garden (in a half wine barrel so it doesn’t get out of hand). I’ve been wanting to make a more permanent one though, out of living willow! I’m not growing too much this year, and what I am is in containers or new beds because the cats all started using my raised beds as their toilets πŸ™ƒ after I was lax one year and didn’t put up my normal fencing/bed covers πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

But on to plants, lol, I’ve got

Tomatoes, several varieties
Basil
Lettuces
Arugula
Asparagus
Pumpkin
Cucumbers pickling!
Lemon balm
Mint
Parsley
Onions
Chives
Dill
Love age
Blackberries
Raspberries-still don’t know where I’m going to permanently put these…away from the blackberry, but also away from the tomatoes
Borage
Oregon blanketflower
Sunflowers
Lacy phacelia
Native milkweeds
Comfrey
Yarrow
Calendula
Arnica
Strawberries
Pears
@SuperbRaspfern I’m planning on canning this year too!! I didn’t get a rhubarb yet, I’m going to take some off my mothers when she divides it, and I can’t wait for strawberry rhubarb jam 🀀

Also! I noticed my pumpkin leaves doing the same thing a couple years back, with those light colored spots, like on yours. But I could never find out what that was! Do you know?
Love your ingenuity!!! Can’t wait to see it planted and growing πŸ‘. No room for a vegetable garden here. I’ve done some containers, mainly cherry tomatoes and bell peppers πŸ«‘. We tried squash one year but discovered we didn’t have the male and female, or was it we needed a different squash nearby?? πŸ€”πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. Can’t recall. I’m always so impressed with large vegetable gardens πŸ™Œ
@DreamMachine I’d still recommend putting that wine barrel on something to elevate it off the ground. I have friends here who did the same, grew bamboo in a barrel to keep it contained…it escaped through the drainage hole on the bottom!
@debbiedo Good Morning Loves! Let’s see……. In my raised beds I have-
Tomatoes - Bell Peppers - Collards - White Strawberries - Red Strawberries - πŸ“ Zucchini - & Yellow Squash That is all I planted this year because my greenhouse has gotten so time consuming! I can’t spend every single minute I’m away from work on plants! (Although I think I do 🀣) I do have a question for you garden people! @DreamMachine @MariansOasis @Preciousplants1 @SuperbRaspfern @Boymom-plantmom @CutePolypremum @elisenavidad @FamedGymealily @FitBrowallia @Idplantthat @princesspitstop @sarah10orio @Ananyaplantluv1 @BabeVila @CordialWildyam @Forbes57 @Lynsplants @RealSimpleMama @ZappyLilac84 @BEsucculent @CactusAdjacent @Dawgfreak @GardenCat43 @Jho @Luvlilu @RefinedSandwort @savandtalloo
HOW DO YOU KEEP SQUIRRELS 🐿️ OUT OF YOUR GARDEN?
Have a wonderful weekend‼️πŸͺ΄πŸ˜ƒ
@DreamMachine Your gardens sound wonderful, I can’t wait to see them all filled out thriving! I’ve never heard of Lovage, I looked it up and it sounds delish πŸ˜‹ I don’t have great luck with getting jam to set up, but strawberry rhubarb might make me try again! Do you freeze the rhubarb until the strawberries are ripe?
@CordialWildyam oh dear, that’s a *good* point re bamboo runners escaping out the bottom. 😝 Well…the barrel has been there at least 6 years so far…I’ll see if my husband can’t bring a dolly home from work πŸ˜‚
@debbiedo I have NO idea! Bahahahaha!! to make enough for jam this year I’m going to hope the farmers market has both for me, as my strawberry pot probably won’t produce enough to make the amount of jam I’m thinking about πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ But I also have to find a new canner. Since we got a new glass top stove, my old canner won’t work anymore. Poo
@MariansOasis I saw this idea online except they used big nursery pots. I didn’t have any that big and five-gallon buckets with holes drilled in the bottom seemed the cheapest way to go πŸ€‘

We have a small 50x100 city lot, but I’m strategizing some more raised beds now that I’ve got the time/energy/interest (and the hubs is on board with replacing grass - it’s only taken 25 years!) πŸ˜‚
@Ponytailmom I have to keep squirrels and cats out of my garden, so I either cover my beds with a chicken wire fence, or for the ones with hoops I cover with some kind of cloth or shade cloth.
@DreamMachine Oh shoot! What kind of pot to you have to get for a glass top stove?
@Ponytailmom Ugh - our neighbor feeds ALL the neighborhood β€œwildlife” (squirrels, skunks, raccoons, and stray cats) πŸ™„
@DreamMachine I’m assuming you put the chicken wire down right when you plant and let the plants grown through it?
@debbiedo oh no I don’t! I could have been more clear there 🀭 I make them like a giant cover or box top to my box that is the garden bed while plants are small. As they get bigger/the bed fills out, I take them off. Two of our beds have pvc pipe hoops, which is preferred because they’re so tall and they’re covered easily. My husbands going to get the other two beds hooped up this year too I hope 🀞
@debbiedo I had that classic one, you know black with speckles, but it has an curved/sloped base so it couldn’t be flush with my stove. So I need to get one that is entirely flat on the bottom. I’m looking at this VEVOR brand.
@DreamMachine Thanks for the details! πŸ€“πŸ“
@DreamMachine Oh that’s interesting! I’ve never had a glass top stove so that’s news to me 😁 I have the black speckled one myself. I also have my grandma’s pressure canner, but it’s a planter now 😊πŸͺ΄
@debbiedo hahaha, I LOVE that πŸ‘πŸ˜‚πŸ˜
Oh you industrious planters! I remember the days I’d be right there in the mix. My garden was so edible. Now days it’s survival of the fittest out there. I’ve let it go to whoever can withstand summer heat and a sudden one day freeze. It strangely enough looks beautiful in the spring. So I enjoy it and limit myself to gardening upright with no heavy lifting to keep my back from hurting. I shall vicariously enjoy your harvest.
@BEsucculent I’d love to see your spring garden, please share pics! πŸ€—
Here’s the path I laid down years ago with Carmine and Maggie taking their morning jungle walk.
@SuperbRaspfern very nice gardens. I’m sure they will do very well. You’re really good with plants.
Praying all is well πŸ™πŸ½πŸ’•
Potted cat. 🐱 @debbiedo
@debbiedo love it 😍
@DreamMachine I’m so happy for you and @SuperbRaspfern , Id love to grow food, I’m running behind this year πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ₯—
@SuperbRaspfern oh wow! That’s quite a gorgeous garden! Is the wire up for your ladies to not get into the garden? 🀣 I bet your garden loves the fertilizer and your ladies love the garden leaves as well! @debbiedo ha ha ha I’m laughing so hard because I’m the neighborhood person who feeds all the squirrels and birds, which brings in other wildlife, but I do it to save some of my other berries and things from being taken as often. (Which has benefited) squirrels are a hard one; they are damn ninjas. I didn’t know this till I started researching more; squirrels are actually really smart and they recognize individual people and they come to understand what you say and your routines; they love messing with dogs. (It’s like a game to them) but the kicker is these guys can jump six across things. I decided well crap, putting trees in my yard was just like investing in a new upper yard. Raceway; so as I researched they leave more things alone if they are given what they like; nuts and berries. I remember them stealing a lot of our stone fruits we used to grow. So this was my reasoning. 🀣 Just because I don’t have a larger yard I am not doing a veggie garden here; I have too much fruit and nuts that they may not grow as well. So I’m actually doing my mom’s garden this year. It’s a smaller one but we are doing crookneck squash (lumpy not smooth) we love fried squash here. Zucchini rounds; lemon Cucumbers; green and purple peas; multiple different varieties of tomatoes; pink and green celery; parsley; asparagus; watermelon radish; and then some new coffee plants. We have year-round herb gardens and all our berries. But we aren’t encouraging budding in a lot of fruits for the next couple of years since they are so young. πŸ˜‰ I love reading everyone’s gardens! Gorgeous πŸ«ΆπŸ»πŸ™ŒπŸ©΅πŸŒΈπŸ
@Idplantthat I think I will go buy bulk peanuts and lay them all around! Great Idea! Thank you!
@debbiedo Debbie I’m so happy you’re growing veggies. You got this: πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘πŸ½
@BEsucculent What a gorgeous spot! 🀩
@BEsucculent what a cutie pie ❀️🐈 I’ve heard those will take over a garden though! πŸ˜‰
@Idplantthat @Ponytailmom I actually don’t mind him feeding the squirrels. I even got him a couple feeders that are easy for the squirrels to get to, but not the skunks and raccoons. He won’t use them though. πŸ˜•

He just dumps a bag on his deck every day. It really has become a problem because there are MANY more skunks and raccoons around, they’re around more and more during daylight hours, and they’re causing lots more damage than before.

If he stuck with bird feeders and squirrel feeders, all would be well! πŸͺ΄
@Idplantthat Also I forgot about Lemon Cucumbers! πŸ˜‹ I may need to make room for some of those too! πŸ’›
@SuperbRaspfern

Don't forget companion planting...although it might be too late, as your crops are already placed and...I've got a feeling you've done that already πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜„!
@CutePolypremum I just got them planted up with some marigolds and nasturtiums. Is that what you mean?
Planted up and (almost) ready to go (we just need to get some water to them)! πŸ’¦ @CutePolypremum @DreamMachine @MariansOasis @Ponytailmom @Preciousplants1 @BEsucculent @Boymom-plantmom @CordialWildyam @Idplantthat @SuperbRaspfern

Hello my precious friends πŸ’›!
I've missed you so much!
Had to take some days off due to family stuff, but I haven't forgotten you and hoping to post soon.

Virtual squeezes and hugs πŸ«‚ πŸ€—.

I've been enjoying everything ya'll have posted and am definitely going to hit you up with a plantie question soon.
@debbiedo oh wow, yeah just dumping a bag of (is it bird seed, or…?) on the deck 😬 skunks 🦨 and raccoons oh my
@CutePolypremum

I hope everything’s ok with your family dear Joanie β™₯️β™₯️

All the love and hugs back to you 🌬️β™₯οΈπŸ«ΆπŸ«§πŸŒΏπŸ¦‹πŸ¦„
@BEsucculent

Barbara!

What a rare species.
You're so blessed to have a Potted 🐈 😻 πŸˆβ€β¬›οΈ 😺!!!

What kind of soil do you use?
Do you take cuttings for propagation?

πŸ˜†
@DreamMachine He dumps a big bag of peanuts, everyday.
@debbiedo I can’t find your post: hi @SuperbRaspfern how are you? We haven’t talked in a minute: so excited about yours and Debbie’s gardens βοΈπŸŽ‰
@CutePolypremum hey Joanie πŸ‘‹πŸ½so good to hear from you. Praying that all went well with you family. Glad you’re back. πŸ’•πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ˜Š
@MariansOasis I’m with you no room but would love to grow some veggies πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ’•
I’m just truly wowed with all these gardens!!!! Just a tad of jelly over here!! I miss having one!!
I am a tomato snob. If it is not organic, or preferably garden fresh, I just can’t tolerate them πŸ‘‘πŸ’…πŸ… I did not plant them on my porch, but I did plant New Mexico chile and a Pablano pepper plant. πŸ™‚
@BEsucculent ooh, your jungle path and garden remind me of some of my family’s homes πŸ₯° I love it!! Is that a crepe Myrtle back there? 🀩
@debbiedo oh dear 🫠
@debbiedo I’m impressed; you’d be surprised how many people don’t know about those! I love eating them fresh with a little salt. πŸ§‚ But I’m a salt lover. I salt my grapefruit instead of sugar. 🀣 Lemon cucumbers are so easy to plant as seeds though, so I bet they’d love your garden! πŸͺ You’ll have to keep us all posted on your tomato towers. I love it; my nieces and nephews when they were younger would have loved that as a fort! 🀣 I’m excited to see how they work out! Raccoons 🦝 and skunks 🦨 are terrible little scavengers. I’m shocked they are out during the day; that’s really not normal. I would be worried about them having something wrong with them, if they are. But that’s just from what my family told me growing up, is they don’t come out unless they are sick. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ @Ponytailmom one thing I did learn with the squirrels is they call them nature’s little gardeners. 🀣 but peanuts actually cause them digestive problems and can lead to problems with them. (I only know because I did peanuts for a long time as well) but they love nuts and berries, but their teeth never stop growing, kinda like mice and rats. Anyways; hard-shelled nuts is the way to go. They generally are pretty good if you negotiate with them on foods. Ha ha ha (I’m sure I sound totally nuts πŸ₯œ) but I promise I research a lot 🀣
@CutePolypremum Joanie, I really hope your family stuff is going well, and I hope a fast and speedy recovery to whatever is going on. If we can help at all, please let us know. Sending you the virtual hug πŸ€— 🩡🫢🏻🌸🐝
@Idplantthat It would make a GREAT fort!

I dont want to give the wrong idea, the skunks and raccoons aren’t walking around all times of day, but we definitely see them more and earlier than is normal. But OMG, now I have to worry about the squirrels having digestive issues too?! ?😳
@Idplantthat And salt on grapefruit is THE way to eat it!
@debbiedo ha ha ha I know. It really kinda worried me when I read about it. I couldn’t hurt an animal, especially my little buddies. So I did look it up; they’ve got digestive issues for sure! 🀣 Oh, that’s good about those guys; I really don’t know as much about skunks 🦨 they aren’t ones I’ve been around as much, but a friend of mine had another friend whose husband was a police officer; I guess they had to go in and remove some animals from a home, and one was a skunk! 🦨 It had its smeller removed, and my friend said it’s like being around a weird cat; but it loved to be held. So idk? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ But raccoons 🦝 I know are very annoying little pests, while they are cute, they can be massive jerks and if upset can attack with force. (Yes, I have run from an angry raccoon 🦝 possum. 🀣 (and yes, literally)) But those guys will steal and eat anything! I have them all the time sneaking into my gardens and bird feeders. So I do understand the annoyance and the havoc they make. I apologize for misunderstanding that before.
@Idplantthat Just part of the deal of living on the grid πŸ˜‰ He’s a great neighbor otherwise, so we roll with it the best we can πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
@Idplantthat Skunks are indeed HIGHLY intelligent and make wonderful pets!!!

They are sweet and gentle little animals. My Dad actually had one as a pet as well. When found as a baby with no mother and raised by humans they are cuddly and sweet. And will only spray if threatened. So if you have a stable happy environment you will be fine. My Dads was on the farm.
@Idplantthat The fencing is for everything. The deer, chickens, cottontails, jackrabbits, wild boar etc. I would have no garden left otherwise. I have berries planted along the fencing on one side. Anything that pops through the fence I'm going to let the wildlife eat.

I planted plenty of squash, pumpkins etc. to share with the chickens. I learned very quickly to keep the dogs out! The go into play mode if they cross the fence line and trample everything. So I had to reseed some spots. I recently started making wire baskets with chicken wire to cover the plants the wild birds like. I love all of our wildlife but am constantly revising things to keep critters out.

I don't feed the wild animals on purpose. But they do get fed with the chicken feed etc. it's fun to see the bird nests all over and hear all of the beautiful birds. I know rabbits can be a nuisance but they are so adorable!!! πŸ‡ I'm one of those people that plants things and accepts that some will go to wildlife. That's okay I always plant extra. 🩷
@CutePolypremum Absolutely, I've got companion plants all over tucked in there! So very important! 🩷
@debbiedo I also suggest seeds. Many of them really don't do well when moved.

My cantaloupe, watermelons and corn went directly into the ground. They sprout surprisingly fast. Make sure to cover them with a wire basket. (I make mine with chicken wire) That will help keep the birds from pulling them up. They love the freshly sprouted veggies. I uncover them when the plants are 6-8 inches and can tolerate some pecking.
@debbiedo

Good morning dear Debbie!

I'm sorry it's taken so long to communicate and get back to you.

The flowers you mentioned are great for deterring certain pests.

Companion planting is when certain vegetable plants are planted side-by-side or a smaller vegetable is planted under a specific taller plant, they actually help each other to grow stronger and more healthy.

I don't have time now to give you specifics, can you research?
Besides the internet, I suggest contacting our awesome pals @DreamMachine @Idplantthat @MariansOasis @Ponytailmom @SuperbRaspfern.

Sending virtual hugs! πŸ€—πŸ˜˜
@Idplantthat

Good morning, my lovely friend!

Thanks so much for your love and good wishes. They mean a lot to me...

Am still in the thick of things but have hopes things will be better soon.

Have a swell day! πŸ€—πŸ˜πŸ˜šβ˜ΊοΈ
@Preciousplants1

Hi dear Sherri!

Please forgive me for answering you so late!

Thanks so much for your loving words and concern.

Things are looking up and I'm looking forward to chatting and sharing with all of our awesome Greg family!

Have an awesome day. πŸ˜šπŸ˜ŽπŸ€—πŸ˜˜
@CutePolypremum gm Joanie so good to hear from you. Praying all is well.
I had an injection in my back that went wrong and I’ve been down for above a week. Thank be to God I can finally walk without my cane .
Blessings to you πŸ™πŸ½πŸ’•
@SuperbRaspfern gm my friend hope you are well. Have a blessed day πŸ’•πŸ™πŸ½miss you
@debbiedo Gm my friend how are those tomatoes coming along. Happy planting πŸ™πŸ½πŸ«ΆπŸ½Blessings.
@Preciousplants1

Oh my gosh!

I'm so sorry to hear about your mishap with that injection. πŸ˜πŸ˜‘πŸ˜Ά
It must have been painful...

But, am glad you're up and about! πŸ˜πŸ€—πŸ˜‡
@SuperbRaspfern loving all your sharing; that’s great you are okay with the wildlife just eating a few things. It’s also brilliant you take that into account. πŸ˜‰ Ohh! My neighbors have chickens πŸ” and we give them our mango and guava leaves; tell me if I’m wrong (I definitely could be) but if I remember right I read they actually help chickens and help with some type of heavy chest thing chickens get? (I really hope I’m making sense) but have you ever heard of that? That’s so wild your dad had a skunk 🦨 as a pet; I’ve heard they are pretty much like cats and are ridiculously sweet, my friend said flower, that was the skunk’s name, was the sweetest thing and she just wanted to be held and sleep. 😴 I had an uncle who had a pet raccoon when I was a kid I liked him until he bit me really hard; he was stealing my chicken. πŸ— 🀣 I learned you don’t fight a raccoon 🦝 for food. πŸ€£πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ
@CutePolypremum oh, I’m sorry to hear that, Joanie! I really hope it’s not too stressful; if I remember right, you also have health issues, and I know stress can be such an awful trigger for it. If I can do anything or listen, please don’t hesitate. 🩡
πŸ˜‚ Love your raccoon story! I actually chase those off because of my chickens. They will kill an entire flock just for funsies!! They like to pull off their heads for sport. Only animal out here that I have actively chased. I must of looked like a weirdo, yelling and making a ruckus but I gotta be there for my birds.

And yes mango and guava leaves are fantastic to keep your chickens really healthy! They help them in so many ways.

I have an herb garden just for my girls. They have all kinds of herbs and love to sunbathe take dirt baths and snack at the same time. I'm just glad they enjoy it. I find them every afternoon in their herb garden relaxing and snacking. I also use dried herbs sprinkled in my coop all over. They like to snack on them and it helps your chickens stay healthy and prevents parasites and worms. It also smells so good I crush it as I sprinkle to release the oils. Sometimes when I prune I'll hang a bunch of sage and lavender branches upside down to dry in their coop and they snack, climb and nibble it.

They are a bit spoiled but worth it. I have one little baby that Mama Mango abandoned early so it gets a lot of special attention. It climbs onto my hand, up my arm and onto my shoulder to help me feed all the animals. When it's done it just hops down and does its chicken thing again. It's such a sweetie and I visit it a few times a day so it doesn't get too lonely. Fortunately my hens, roo and pullets are all nice and don't pick on it. But it's just kinda the odd man out.
@Preciousplants1 You have a blessed day as well Sherri. I pray all is going well for you. Love you my friend! 🩷
@SuperbRaspfern thank you same to you πŸ’•
@SuperbRaspfern I love that; sounds like your chickens are so loved and that cute little baby I bet has imprinted hard! Growing up I grew up on a smaller farm; but we had steers and quarter horses. But omg my dad got really into Guinea hens; so we had them. 🀣 I had one that I raised from a hatchling and he definitely imprinted he was so cute; but guineas are known for being very vain and running after cars to see their reflections. And then are super cautious so if you’ve got a crack in your sidewalk they aren’t sure they can cross so it takes a minute for them. But we had 🦝 raccoons and they are awful! I’m in agreement there; they are terrible and mean when they want to be. We had a big king shepherd/wolf hybrid and he used to kill them if they got into the yard he’d snap the neck without making them bleed. But 😬 the largest raccoon 🦝 in the backyard it was over 30 pounds. It was crazy but omg 😬 they are terrible 😒 and insanely aggressive. I’ve had to run from a few angry ones before 🀣 I’d honestly rather take on a skunk 🦨 then a raccoon 🀣
