Happy Monday!
I took a cutting from my mom’s prayer plant that was dead. Basically the only cutting with some life left.
I stuck her in some water…. We have roots and 3 new leaves :)
The prayer plant lives on 🙌🏻🙌🏻

@Bmd That prayer plant is very much alive! 🙌 Are you familiar with them? In the same family as calatheas (now Goeppertia) and they’re lovely. I have many varieties 🥰
Please forgive me if you know this already 🙏 The maranta leuconeura such as the one you have likes very little fertilizer and as little chemicals and minerals as possible in their water. If you have even remotely hard tap, it’s safest to go with distilled or rainwater only. They like high humidity, and do not like harsh direct sunlight, as they are forest floor dwellers. I do give mine some east morning sun, but in my house they are happiest in my ‘lower’ light areas (and by that I mean low light to a maranta, not low light to a human 😜)

@Bmd oh Brandon, you DID save her!! 👏 May this be the start of a long wonderful friendship. Prayer plants are a special interest of mine (along with hoyas, begonias, monsteras, and anthurium 🥰) You will probably find that yours actually has movement that you will notice. Prayer plants leaves open during the day, and fold up or move upwards during the night. It’s called nyctinastic leaf movement. That is one of the reasons I love them, they are fun to watch. Most plants move so slowly, as to not be noticeable day to day.
Don’t let them ever get bone dry. If you see the leaves curling upwards, then they did get too dry. I am in a cool humid climate, and I try to water mine when they are about 90-95% dry. If you are in a much hotter or drier climate, I would recommend not letting them get past 75% dry.

@RefinedSandwort my pleasure Joy! Did you get a prayer plant? People knock em for being fussy, but I see them as being extremely vocal about their wants and needs. And I appreciate that. I’d rather know then realize they were suffering in silence! 😭

@DreamMachine My step daughter gave me a cutting she rooted when we visited in mid May. It did well initially, but I I think 🤔 it might have gotten too dry. I watered it and it does look like it’s putting out a new leaf. I also moved it because I think it got unhappy where it was after we started running the AC. Here’s a pic. Any suggestions or help appreciated!
@RefinedSandwort they actually look pretty ok! But it does look like they got too dry at one point. Just keep your maranta in a spot that fluctuates the least. Their native habitat is on the floor of the rainforests of Brazil. So, they like it humid, with warm temperatures, dappled light, and never drying out FULLY fully. How much depends on how cool/hot dry/wet it is where you are.
One other tip is to not fertilize them as much as your typical houseplant. My water usually has a quarter of a dose of fertilizer in it for all my other tropicals, and I fertilize with every watering. But for prayer plants I will fertilize every OTHER watering during the growing season 🪴

@DreamMachine Im guessing only certain varieties of prayer plants close their leaves at night cause mine don't..🤷
@luvmygreenhouse oooh beautiful roseopictas! These ones DO also have nighttime leaf movements. Although the way you will hear or read them described is a bit hard to understand, at least, it was for me. I couldn’t figure out why people thought their leaves looked like folded praying hands. 🧐🤷♀️ At or approaching nighttime they just hold their leaves upwards, like 🙌 or 🫷🫸 and then during the daytime they tilt their leaves to a more horizontal position to catch some light, like this 👐 or 🫴.
I’ll take a pic of one of my roseopictas for you during the day and then try to remember a nighttime picture for you 😅 sometimes for certain plants the movements are not huge. But just checking it does get dark for yours, though, yeah? Not like a 24 hour grow light or anything on nearby? 😅

@DreamMachine Yes! Now that you say it, I think they do slant upward🫷🫸 slightly at night but before you mentioned that, I figured that was nothing out of the ordinary.. well it wasn't but I hadn't realized it!!🤣🤣
@DreamMachine yes they do get darkness. They are actually in my greenhouse right now and they are loving it! ☺️
@luvmygreenhouse Nice! Yes it’s not like, HUGELY drastic or anything, but it sure does make watching timelapse videos of them really fun. It’s also the closest I feel like we can get to observing a plant sleep 🥹🥰 🛌
