Start with a pair of very sharp, sterilized pruners. The sharper the better—you want the cut to be fast and clean to avoid tearing and damaging the stem. You also want to make the cut at about a 45° angle (creates more surface area, which means more roots).
Choose a node/set of leaves where you want to make the cut, position the pruners just below that node (approx 1/2-3/4"), and make a swift, clean cut. You'll see white sap, which you should avoid touching because it can cause skin irritation (or better yet, wear gloves 😛).
