Help, please?! #MonsteraPeru

So I received this rooted cutting last November (red cup picture). It was water propagated, and it had 4 leaves but one of the leaves looked damaged. I potted it up, and shortly after, the damaged leaf dropped. We have had our ups and downs as I am learning more about this plant. One leaf started to turn yellow and a spot formed. I treated it with Arber (the yellow, green and purple bottle) regularly since, and of course the color around the spot never returned to normal.

I read it likes to have really airy soil and not be root bound at all, and that it likes consistent water or it can be a diva. So I repotted a bit ago into a really chunky mix. After that, it pushed out another leaf and it looks like a new growth point is starting. It has started to get warmer, so our ceiling fans have been on and I noticed his soil drying faster than normal. Just recently, the leaves started to turn yellow again after I discovered him kind of dry. I have put him under a grow light and really trying to make sure he doesn’t dry out. The leaf that had the spot recently shriveled and dropped (second pic) and I am still treating this guy with Arber preventatively.

Is there anything else I should be doing or you see I am doing wrong? I recently lost 5 plants in one day to some type of aggressive bacteria I think that came from a new plant, and the bacteria survived quarantine, so I’m on high alert right now.

My instinct just based on appearance is that it may be getting watered too frequently, or the soil may be staying damp too long. In either case I would try watering slightly less frequently. And from my personal experience when I have overwatered plants and the soil is pretty damp, it can take a good extra week or so to fully dry out, depending on conditions and lighting. A lot of monstera varieties will tolerate drying out somewhat between watering. I use my finger to check the soil. If I still feel moisture I don’t water. ( for most plants) I also got a cheap moisture meter on Amazon for like $7 and I use that sometimes to help me decide when to water. I like this article and how it describes how the leaves should feel after you water the plant: like corrugated cardboard, flat and stiff 🤣 but that is a helpful description. https://hometoheather.com/monstera-peru-karstenianum/
@nellz4estfairyz ok. So I have a moisture meter, the soil was completely dry. It was Dry+. The leaves are stiff, like she describes, despite being a little yellow.

I have not fertilized though. Hmm, I will give that a try.
Hello @TheOddAsity 🤗
I don't have any experience with this plant in particular, but as you mentioned it does best in airy soil and can't stand being root bound, I wonder if it might be interesting to move him to a slightly bigger pot (I noticed he's in smaller pot within the medium one, right?), and you can then wash off all the soil from his roots, which will be especially beneficial in case it's some sort of infection, and replace the soil with Leca, which will allow better aeration. 😊 would Ms @AnthuriumQueen maybe have some advice? 🪴💕
This is like an anthurium. It needs very chunky soil. Mix orchid bark, volcanic pumice, and soil with leca. The leaves will feel stiff like cardboard and they also need lots of light but indirect light so look for bright indirect light from the west without the light actually hitting the foliage. Water deeply once the soil will dry since it prefers not sitting in wet soil. If anything it likes moist medium like a freshly used towel but not wet. If you have had a bacteria before in your oasis, it could be handled with a dose of liquid copper fungicide and sanitizing the pots. Most plants like a lot of humidity and depending on your home’s environment, you may need one. Keep in mind that while one plant won’t mind low humidity, another will so you may need a humidifier and an enclosed spot for this plant. It’s often work to find the sweet spot for these plants that land in the “fussy” section but they’re worth it! Good luck!
@eeriewoodlander thanks for the tag! 🫶🏼🌿
@AnthuriumQueen it does have that type of soil mix, so now I know that part was right. I woke up this morning and the bottom 2 leaves were yellow and starting to brown. I think the bacteria got it. I am racking my brain which plants I need to attend to first, as I repotted a bunch about 2 weeks ago.

I have never had something run through my oasis like a bacteria before, I have been going through disinfecting everything but I haven’t been quick enough! (We had prom and 2 of our girls out of town stay with us, and I just caught a cold! 😭).

I have been working on raising the humidity in our house and it’s just taking time. I have humidifiers running. I live in the desert 🤷🏼‍♀️😂
@TheOddAsity Some plants do best behind glass. This may be one of them. You may have something in the air and this is one of the reasons why I keep my prized possessions in cabinets. Have you checked your watering devices? They tend to build up bacteria if you haven’t scrubbed them out with soap and vinegar. A hard scrub and soak and another scrub works. Rinse thoroughly. The same with your humidifier. They tend to build up bacteria as well. Your baby may be better off in a blend of tree moss and long sphagnum moss to control the water. Even soil can contain pathogens.

I had something running around and it took three days to catch up to it. I lost two plants. It was bacteria from a cricket biting into my variegated Adonsonii. It’s on one of my variegated PPPs but it’s secluded and being treated with the copper I mentioned. It’s going to be a lifelong battle with this plant since it’s the second time it’s under treatment but she keeps coming back.

I’m worried she’s not happy in her environment but I’m moving her around to find the right place for her in rooms I have no other plants.

I never thought a PPP would be so fussy. Meanwhile my Anthuriums and Calatheas are taking up less effort and time than this one.
@AnthuriumQueen it hard to remember something as simple as nature can affect the nature we are trying to bring in! A cricket?!? How on earth did you discover that?!? That’s a good reminder on the watering can! I usually remember to wash that very last when that’s the thing I touch the most. I am pretty good about regularly scrubbing the humidifiers. I threw out all my soil, I have been scrubbing pots, tools, bins, plant mats… Whatever this bacteria is, it survived quarantine and being treated with all 3 types of Arber I have. The inside of the stalk of the plants has turned black and the roots seem to melt in the soil, and then the leaf turns yellow and brown. I don’t have liquid copper as of yet, I need to get some.

I’m all for giving special plants the special glass treatment! Tell you what, so many sites try to blow off humidity like it’s no big deal, when it seems to be the make or break it factor for some plants!! We had 4 of our kids move out this last year and I am about to tackle our sad sad basement and I know exactly which wall I want a glass cabinet on. 😂 I guess I’ll have to pause on acquiring a few of the tropical I would like and wait for that cabinet.

Thanks for the time you have spent helping me!
