Yes, you do need to cut off the top. Keep going until you see no brown in the center of the plant's stem. It looks like it's rotting, this will help prevent the spread of rot. Be sure to sanitize your shears between each cut, and apply a fungicide to the exposed area when you're done. I would also recommend finding out the underlying cause; if it's something like root rot, further action needs to be taken. I cannot garuntee it will regrow its leaves, but do not try to give it extra light or water. That can overwhelm it and stress it out, it needs consistent conditions (unless its conditions are what caused this). You can also opt to give it a very small amount of diluted fertilizer to encourage growth
@SesameSeeds777 Thank you for responding! I will cut it back with your suggestions. Not sure of the cause but I will look at the pot and the soil, see if the roots are ok. Do you think I should separate the other stalk into a separate pot for now so I can continue watering it?
If you want to put the part you cut off into a separate pot, go ahead. I don't think it will survive, though. The stem looks rotten, which means it cannot transport nutrients throughout the plant. Not to mention, once you cut it, it will have to grow roots, which puts extra stress on the cutting and reduces its survival chance. The most important thing right now is figuring out what caused the rotting on your main plant. If you can't figure out the cause, the problem will likely return. I can't even begin to guess the cause until I have full details on the plant. Like it's watering schedule, light, fertilizer, and any recent changes made to its environment right before you noticed the browning stem.
@SesameSeeds777 There are two separate stalks in this pot. I meant should I cut the rotting top and place the remainder of the stalk into a different pot? I would throw the rotten piece away
