Alocasia frydek

My alocasia frydek has a browning leaf! It’s gotten sadder over the last few weeks. Is it time to prune it? If so. Where do I prune it at? At the leaf? At the base? Please help! The first two are now, the last one was the beginning of the spot. It was in a pot that was too large when the spot started. I moved him to a smaller one. #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #AlocasiaAddicts

So sad when such beautiful leaves die 😭
It is up to you what you wanna do, or you can now already prune it, or wait till it dies off further. In my experience, there is no difference really. It's not taking energie away from the plant while dying.

So if you don't like the look you can prune it already, or wait if you don't mind.

To prune you have to cut near the base, since the stem itself also dies off it has no effect to only cut the leaf off.

Good luck with your frydek!!! They are so beautiful πŸ’œπŸ’™ but from experience, they are a pain in the b*tπŸ˜“
Your alocasia is a young plant. There are only 2 leaves on it. If you cut off one leaf, it's like cutting off one lung from a human being.
Your alocasia is near a heater. It looks like the plant doesn't like that, it's too dry there for the plant. Move the plant more away from the heater. This should correct the problem.
Hi Becca!
Alocasias are really picky about, everything. 🀦🏽

This could be due to the large pot, it could have sped up because of the repot, it could be dry winter air, they tend to drop leaves for all those reasons and more.

Because I struggle with most of my alocasias I usually leave a leaf on until it's at least 75% gone. I figure it's still helping to plant until at least that long, but many people say at 50% it's taking more energy than it's given.

Variegated plants need more light than others due to the lack of chlorophyll and alocasias need loads of humidity so I'd recommend a humidifier or pebble tray and extra light since it's winter in Alaska. Hopefully it'll acclimate to its new pot quickly!
@PlantMompy I will wait to prune it and stop by the plant shop for a grow light! It’s so dry here right now! I’ve got a humidifier running 24/7 in my room with the door closed. My ceilings are wayyyy high so it makes heating in my place a little difficult! I’m just hoping my baby will survive our brutal winter and come back happy and healthy in the summer! Thanks for the input:)
I finally put the alocasias that were struggling in an IKEA greenhouse and sealed it. I kept hoping they would adjust somewhat and that I could meet them in the middle humidity-wise but it never happened. I do have some alocasias that don't seem to mind the dry winter air here, but it's totally random 🀦🏽

I do use a ton of pebble trays in the winter, I find them easier than humidifiers sometimes.
@PlantMompy what is a pebble tray? I mist my Green Velvet most days to help with the humidity but am looking for an alternative that isn’t a humidifier
@ChaChaOasis take a plate, bowl, saucer, etc and add decorative rocks, stones from outside, whatever you like and fill the "tray." Then you add water and set your plant on top.

You don't want your plant bottom watering, so either make sure the water level is below the plant pot, or use a cover pot for your plant when you set it on the tray.

The idea is that the water is evaporating under your plant, adding humidity to the air slowly.

Good luck!
