Basil care
Does anyone have tips on how to care for Basil? (soil, watering, lighting, you name it, I haven't a clue what I'm doing) everyone says it's not a very fussy plant but it always dies in my hands ð

@eeriewoodlander in general, basil likes moist soil so water fairly frequently (when top 2 inches is dry), 6 to 8 hours of light, and well draining soil. You can prune the top to get a bushier plant and once the plant is 6-8 inches tall you can pinch off leaves to harvest. I let mine go to seed because I want them seeds, but if you want it to keep growing and not put energy to blooms, you can cut those off.
@eeriewoodlander
I have 3 different kinds of basil growing outside! Are you growing indoors or outdoors?

If youâre buying store bought basil best thing you can do is repot into multiple containers. Basil gets real grumpy in those situations bc itâs over crowded.
Repeating what Jess said, once youâve reported, the best way to make it get bushy is to cut the stems above a leaf node. This in turn will force it to produce new growth and eventually each shoot will be as bushy as the container from the store!

@JesssJungle thatâs some fine looking basil!
@coffeeNcalathea thatâs very bunny ð° ð I consider that a rabbit ð response unit.
oop gotta catch up lol thanks everyone ðĐ·ðĐ· @JesssJungle @Heyitsianb @CoherentPhalsa
so we usually grow them inside, but since we always kill them like this we decided to try the outdoors lol
yeah they're store bought, and they really were quite root bound, but what we did is we put them into a really big pot w regular compost as far as I know (my mom was the one doing it and she's really not one to indulge plants' demands). Looking at it from here they seem very sad but I'll have to work on it tomorrow if I have the chance ðð p sure they were 3 of those store-bought pots, so maybe they still are too packed...
so lots of water, good drainage, and 6 to 8 hours of light, yeah? full blown direct sunlight or just brightness?

and btw, @JesssJungle, I had no idea there's such a wide variety of Basil out there, I'm flabbergasted w the black opal ð§ððĪ so you can eat it too? it's so pretty I'd feel bad lol
@eeriewoodlander yep it's all edible! And it smells SO GOOD!
@eeriewoodlander start with morning light and mid-afternoon shade for a couple weeks to see how they do. If you end up with a lot of individual plants you can also test a few in full sun, part shade, etc. to see what works best for your climate.
Fwiw I keep mine outdoors in full shade bc âthe summer sun here is basically a giant death ray in the skyâand it seems to be happy.

@eeriewoodlander I tried both ways indoor and outdoor, and because of the full sun outside in my yard I killed it, my coworker gave me 3 peat moss cups that you just go directly into soil so yesterday I almost planted them in an outside planter with the 4 peat moss cups of beef steak tomatoes she gave me also but separate would separate to two different pots, I took the Basil inside and will try it with other herbs in a long windowsill pot, I had no idea there was other varieties either, that was interesting and once again a lot of great info here in this post comments. Good luck I have my fingers crossed ðĪðŧ for mine to grow and thrive, love me some basil and the smell. Yummo!
@Heyitsianb oh cool, I'm thinking of perhaps getting them on self watering pots by the kitchen window ðĪðĪ
we don't get a lot of sunny days here so I'd say sunlight is unlikely to be an issue ð but we are in the summer after all, can't hurt to give them some shade and protection from the heat as long as they're still getting some brightness.
Thanks for your guidance ðĪðŦ

@13Stitches thanks Kristine ðâĪïļâĪïļ same to you
@HeyNicePlants oh yeah I'm a huge advocate for bottom-watering ðð do it for all my plants to prevent pests!!
Thanks for your contribution ðĨ°âĪïļâĪïļ

@SensationalKoa ooh yeah if it's really really sunny in your area it is probably better to keep them indoors ðŽ their leaves do feel delicate/fragile, so initially I was v confused too ab whether or not to give them a lot of sunlight. Ig we can never go wrong with indirect sunlight as long as we have a lot of brightness ð

Best of luck w yours too!! Basil is one of the best herbs out there imo, I'm yet to find someone who dislikes it after all ðĪĐð
