But…for why….😩
I need help. I am trying to understand Alocasia. I reeeeeally want to understand them. But every time I get one, something happens.
But….NOW I have this app so I can ask all my plants questions here! I didn’t have this app before when I had my last Alocasia.
Why is the bottom corner of the leaf doing this? I no like. 😑 It’s not crispy. Just feels a little “dryer” than the rest of the leaf and wimpy. I have a new leaf coming in as well.
Does this Alocasia plants like air movement? Does it like for the soil to be moist? Does it like to be under a grow light?
I would love any advice! 💜

3ft to light, indirect
4” pot with drainage
Last watered 1 year ago
Hi Rachael! Alocasia don’t like direct sunlight. Only indirect . The leaves turning that color could be from underwatering, low humidity- and also from tap water. Also, fertilizer can make salt build up in the soil and can burn the leaves. I can’t see what kind of pot it’s in and how the soil looks..but also, have you inspected the leaves- top and underside- for pests? I see some things but am not sure if I’m seeing dust or pests. I’m no expert it I hope this helps. I’m sure more Greggers will give more expert advice soon. #alocasiahelp
@theloveofplants alocasia are super susceptible to fungus and to add insult to injury they do like having moist soil AND they’re susceptible to rot 😂😭 Don’t leave water on their leaves, that leads to fungus. I treat my alocasias for fungus regularly. Whenever I forget, I end up with a yellow leaf. They also need lots and lots of air circulating their roots, and they depend on humidity, which for me means they do need circulating air.
Think of where they grow...forest floors.
Indirect light, humid environment...leaves will burn easy if to much light to long.
A pebble tray or cool mist humidifier, light misting..damp soil...
It's one of those plants I refer to as drama queens...sometimes it's just finding the right location..think where it grows in nature and you'll find that sweet spot.

@theloveofplants the card says succulent soil..... depending on how often you are watering, it could be thirsty
@JungleNes - okay, that is good to know…maybe that is what is happening since both plants are getting a new leaf.
@ModestHardbeech - That was an accident on my part - the plant is in regular soil. Not succulent soil.
@PlantJedi - originally I had the plant outside on my front porch. It was getting too much light and was not staying humid. I brought the plant inside, cut off all the drying leaves and was left with the little baby and the mother plant. Since moving them inside, they have only been under a grow light and receive indirect light from the window door. Alocasias are very finicky - but I really want to learn how to “master” the art of keeping them happy. I will move the plants to another place in my home that gets indirect light and not under a grow light.
@SillyPlantGirl - I currently have each plant under a grow light. They are also next to a door that receives indirect light. I use reverse osmosis water to water all my plants. It could be too much fertilizer…right now each plant is in a plastic pot with drainage. I have inspected the leaves several times and also treated them with neem oil when I bought the plant inside, after being outside.
@Araceae - Right!? When I bought the plant, it was THRIVING in direct, bright, HOT sunlight…I don’t get it.
@ScrupulousWeed - these plants really are drama queens. 😑 I truly think I need to find the right location in him home. Right now I have them in my basement with my propagation station. I lightly mist all those plants almost everyday. The plants receives indirect light from outside but also has a grow light for part of the day.
@TheOddAsity - What do you use to treat for fungus? Right now I have the plant in a chunky soil, I have a fan that I run during the day to circulate air in the room. If I do mist my plants - I get very little on the alocasia leaves. Offff course they like moist soil but are also susceptible to root rot 🥴

@PlantJedi & @PoisedAlbo - I have a Silver Dragon coming in the mail today…now I am slightly panicking that I am going to fail with this Alocasia. Say you were getting this plant in the mail today. Step by step, what would you do to get the plant acclimated to your home?
@PlantJedi - Chunky soil is best for Alocasia plants, right?
@PlantJedi - ohhh okay, THAT is really good to know!
@PlantJedi - no worries - I figured that was the case! 😂
@PlantJedi are they fussy once repotted? And do you water right away or wait a few days?
I find with all of my "Drama Queen/ Special Needs plants" I was my worse enemy....super paranoid, extra attention...and the constant worry am I doing it right, made everything worse. When I finally started researching the where's and how's of each and sat back and thought about what can I do to recreate that same environment...things got a lot less hectic in my plant room.
Understanding the dynamics of its natural environment relieved a lot of unnecessary pressure I was putting on myself and unknowingly passing on to them. Takes some time, and thinking outside the box but in the end it's drive that thrives. #whatmyplantsees #plantsMakePeopleHappy #plantaddict #fortheloveofplants

@theloveofplants Ahhh! I absolutely love Alocasias! So far throughout my journey of learning about them, I’ve realized that half of mine tend to be Drama queens 🙃 I have dealt with a lot of different issues/setbacks including but not limited to leaf spot, root rot, spider mites, going dormant, etc. but I have not had any experience with your particular alocasia.
Oddly enough, this is the first time I haven’t instantly said it was some sort of fungal or bacterial leaf spot. After looking closely at your photos and reading your responses, I honestly think it might be burnt from the combination of neem oil and grow light…maybe that spot specifically was saturated longer. With it being the only mature leaf and more than likely heading towards its way out, it could also just be starting early.
Unfortunately, I have burnt several of my plants with neem oil and one of my plants (Monstera Peru) drastically changed after treatment. For now, be on the lookout for other appearances, but from the looks of it! I think it looks pretty darn healthy!

@PlantJedi - No worries Miguel! All good here! Okay, don’t water too soon too often. That makes total sense the way you explained it!
Do you have a special fertilizer you use? And if so, how often for you feed the plant?
I like the idea of grouping the plants together. They create their own humid environment-which is just so cool! 😎
Okay-soft tissue and lighter color leaves further from the light…darker the color and thicker leaves…closer to the light. I have learned so many new things! This is so helpful!!!!!
That could be the reason my ‘Low Rider’ had the discoloration - the plant is lighter in color AND softer tissue AND was very close to the grow light. (Which I think you mentioned in an earlier comment. BUT. Now I know the “why”).

@PlantJedi - okay. Soft tissue alocasia under a light=more humidity. Good to know also about fertilizer-I will keep that in mind.
So this dragon tail alocasia I got. I was thinking about placing it in a window that gets about 2 hours or early morning sunlight then bright indirect light for the rest of the day. Would that work?
I will also keep that is mind for black velvet alocasias - I think they are stunning and would love to have one someday.

@PlantJedi - Thank you Miguel for taking all this time to answer my questions-I appreciate you very much!
Yay! I am so excited to hop on this alocasia train…and hopefull succeed this time! 😂
