Plant Light Needs Calculator - Use of a Light Meter App a...
Often I am recommending the use of a light meter app and often suggest Photone although there are many excellent alternative apps that can be used.
However, did tou know they also provide some useful additional information on their
website.
One of the best and most useful things is a calculator:
https://growlightmeter.com/calculator/
So you measure the light intensity (PPFD), the length of time and type of plant (covers most indoor plants) and it will guide you as to what it recommends is needed and how to solve it
It also have some useful articles to help you understand your plant light needs.
If anyone else has a recommended light meter app or calculators or even just useful information of improving the lighting for your plants, feel free to share below π
Or let me know what you think of the calculator and how its recommendations compared to your current plant light conditions.

@CutePolypremum Hi Joanie, Your questions prompted me to finally get around to publishing the above, hope it helps !
@Seymour
I'm sorry but I just have to say....you are amazing!
I personally feel that it would be a wonderful thing and a great idea for you to publish a book containing all the information that you have researched and learned since becoming a plant nut...
It's too much to ask of you, and probably would be quite difficult, time consuming, and unrealistic but I'm selfish and...I'll bet lots of us Greggers and other folks around the world, would buy at least one... A book or pamphlet like that is really needed! Especially written by you

@CutePolypremum Thanks for your kind words, Joanie. I just wish I could find all my old posts easily lol π But let me know if this calculator helps you with that recent query, if you get it all figured out over the Labor Day weekendβ¦or eventually. Trust me I donβt get a commission from Photone π All the best with it ! ππ
@SuperblyLilac Yea thatβs great CarmiB, am I right in understanding itβs a paid app? Do you find any added bonuses or limitations ? Thanks for sharing as it looks useful ππ
@Seymour Downloaded. It's a neat tool. I think it will still take a while to understand it all fully and make it useful, but it is a quick way to check for sure!
It's amazing how quickly the light drops to virtually nill as you get just a little bit away from the source.

@UltraKoreanfir Yes, thatβs the biggest challenge I have found with growlights as they may offer great light close up but a little distance and it literally fades away !!! But itβs good to know plus helps to appreciate what plants perceive when it comes to light differs from me. And there can be a lot of confusion with how lights are marketed with confusing terms or claims (wattage isnβt always a good guide for instance).
It all helps I guess as after watering, lighting is the next biggest issue for indoor plants. Have fun.

@Seymour are you going to check that one out? It looks ...detailed.
@UltraKoreanfir I have also used that Android PPFD Meter App but I donβt like the ads that come with it and find Photone a lot cleaner layout. But itβs good to contrast/compare and confirm accuracy
Android user here. Photone works just fine with it as well. No need to go somewhere else. I've seen several people trying to evaluate different light apps in comparison to their expensive lightmeters on the internet. And while of course the source on this is a bit iffy, the experiments seemed well executed. Sadly, many apps really did not do all that well, but photone did surprisingly well. On a personal note I'm happy with it. Their database of lightneeds however, is a bit of a mess, on a closer look. They took them from all over the place avoiding to their sources and some don't make sense. I will take a look at the tool. It sounds great. I just hope it's not based on that very database.
@MusicalRedmint Yes Photone is my βgo toβ and it does the job. I did post some time ago (on #cpclubthursday etc) so other PPFD guides for plants including CPs, also at #light, itβs useful information when setting up a growlight for instance. Let there be light ! π‘
@Seymour you always help me without even knowing it π€©
@PrimeCanadalily Glad to know it may be of assistance to you ! Thanks for your comment ππ
Thank you so much for this recommendation! This is really going to come in handy.
I tried some apps and meters in the past but found them very inaccurate and fussy. I even attempted to use a light meter I have from back in my days as a studio photographer, but then realized I have no idea how to translate that into plant use.
