Hey #GregGang! Self watering terracotta planters?

So all of my plants are either in plastic nursery pots or orchid pots nestled inside planters. I wanted to switch a few of my plants over to self watering terracotta pots, more specifically my #CalatheaOrbifolia, #CoffeePlant and maybe my #BirdOfParadise. Does anyone have any experience with these types of planters and these specific plants? The planters below are what I’m thinking about getting. I know terracotta absorbs water from the soil but one of my concerns is these pots don’t have drainage holes, they just draw the water from the outer pot into the soil. #thanks!

I have one of these for my asparagus fern and it’s being doing great in there! No more brown leaves! I just got more for my maranta and calathea
Wow, I’ve never seen this type of self watering planters. That’s fascinating, I’ve been wanting to look into a self watering for my calathea orbifolia as well. I’d be interested in what others have to say as well. My immediate thought is that it would work with the plants that like constant moisture.
@calvina that’s what I was thinking too! The coffee and calathea are my only finicky plants as I’m usually on the underwater side. I have a busy lifestyle so all of my other plants are on the neglected side and seem to love it!
@babyfiretiger13 I can’t speak from experience with this pot, but I completely feel ya on the busy life and don’t have time to keep up with the specifics of the needier plant. Totally worth a try, I say. Keep me updated!
I have a pot very similar and I put a Stromanthe Triostar in it. I can't remember what type of water I used, it could have been tap, or filtered tap water, either way it absorbed into the pot and the hard minerals started to collect around the rim on the inside of the terracotta and on top of the soil.. Which led to some kind of mold. I obviously freaked out and transplanted the Stromanthe triostar into a different pot immediately. I cleaned out the terracotta pot really well and now I just have a Jade in there without the glass and I water it as needed. So maybe just use distilled or rain water with it? @AMG what kind of water do you use for your asparagus fern?
@AMG wow that is so beautiful!! ✨✨ based on looks alone, I’m sold lol okay so far I’m 95% sold. Thanks so much ☺️
@RedRuby I only use distilled for the two plants I intend on transplanting into these pots (calathea and coffee) Thanks so much for the input I will definitely keep that in mind! I’m also worried about mold as the calathea wants to stay moist but then the soil suffers 😫
@RedRuby usually filtered or spring and occasionally distilled. I haven’t had any mold issues but I also let the reservoir dry out for like 1-2 days so maybe that helps
@babyfiretiger13 maybe try it out on one plant first to see if you like it. That’s what I did and then ended up getting more.
@AMG so great to hear! I’m so gonna do this with my fern!
@AMG I will definitely try it out! Thanks so much for the tips! I’m so looking forward to no more brown leaves! @calvina I’ll definitely follow up here and let you know how it goes! I can’t wait!
You should check out watering stakes! Easy and pretty discreet watering system. Search for blumat watering stakes.
@PlantPanda very cool! Do you use them and if so which plants do you use them on?
@babyfiretiger13 I did previously on my rattlesnake plant but I’ve upgraded it to my ikea greenhouse cabinet where it’s thriving :)
