What is causing these brown spots? How do I fix it?
A dark spot on the leaf that has a yellow halo is a disease called Bacterial or Fungal Leaf Spot. This disease will eventually happen to everyone that grows houseplants. Itβs as common as the common cold, but if itβs untreated, it can turn into pneumonia. π
β οΈ Donβt worry Tami. Unlike a common cold, this disease is curable and preventable. But it maybe (repeat) maybe contagious, so as a precaution quarantine this plant away from the other plants in your oasis.
π§Overwatering is the number one cause of bacterial leaf spots. (Overcrowding and poor air circulation could also be the culprit.) Overwatering will cause root rot and pest infestation. π So, consider using the finger-soil method to determine when to water your plant. You should only water your plant when the top few inches of the soil feels completely dry. This method allows your plant to tell you its thirsty. π This method really helps prevent overwatering during the season changes, and the itβs watering require decrease.
βοΈExperts recommend removing the infected leaves, but I just trim off the infected area, using sterilize scissors. If the disease continues, then remove the leaves. Spray ALL the leaves with Neem Oil or any copper base fungicide.
π₯ When itβs time to water your plant, consider spiking its water with 3% hydrogen peroxide. [Add two teaspoons of 3% hydrogen peroxide per one cup of water.] This will disinfect the soil; killing ALL harmful bacteria. https://www.gardeningchannel.com/hydrogen-peroxide-for-houseplants-explained/
