How long is pollen "fresh"?
So I'm first off all wondering if anyone knows if my giant chin cactus might be able to self-pollinate?
And if not. I am in contact with someone that is wondering if we might exchange pollen by mail. Is that possible? How long do the pollen "survive"?πππ΅

The self-pollination process of a Chin cactus, also known as the Gymnocalycium baldianum, can vary depending on various factors such as environmental conditions and the health of the plant. Generally, self-pollination in Chin cacti occurs when the flowerβs reproductive structures, including the stigma and anthers, are in close proximity to each other. This allows the transfer of pollen from the anthers to the stigma within the same flower.
Once self-pollination occurs, the fertilization process takes place, leading to the development of seeds. This process can take several weeks to complete. However, itβs important to note that successful self-pollination and seed development are not guaranteed in every instance. Factors such as the availability of pollinators, proper environmental conditions, and the overall health of the plant can influence the success of self-pollination.
If you have a specific Chin cactus and would like more detailed information about its self-pollination process, it would be helpful to consult specific care guides or reach out to a local botanist or horticulturist who specializes in cacti.

@MockingJay you are very welcome. You can check with your local nurseries. I know they typically have a horticulturalist on staff.
@TwistedThreads haha thank you!
I am actually a little tired of her thoughπ³ Her stem is so fat she is impossible to control and shapeπ And I get so mad at myself when I snap her stemπ΅
