Sunny side

Does it make a difference to a plant whether the leaves face in or out towards the window. photosynthesis wise or chlorophyll? my logical mind says yes because that is where most of the lux comes from. but looking at the back of the leaves is also such a shame #happyplants #newgrowth

Hey Johan 👋 I've had that exact same argument with myself before! Lol mostly because my windows have opening tops and fixed bottoms with a strut on between so plants of a certain height don't crack the sun properly and I was trying to figure out the best arrangement!

The short answer is... Photosynthesis occurs in both the top and bottom of a plant leaf (or back and front of you want to look at it that way lol). The top part of each leaf is packed with palisade cells loaded with chloroplasts, so technically should be more efficient at photosynthesis, but as your plants don't need direct sunlight to photosynthesise I don't think it really matters if you have their "backs" to the window ðŸĨ° xx
Hello, Johan! The plant will move toward the sunlight on its own. The leaves will move and turn over time.

One of the things I like to do it rotate my plant 1/4 turn each time I water it. That way all the sides of the plant get a change to move and turn to the light and the plant looks fuller and it gets light all over.

I had a #BlackPagodaLipstickPlant that was incredible! The fronts of the leaves were green and the back sides were purple. That was the only plant I didn't rotate.
Here's a picture of my purple and green plant. I lost it one winter when the power when out.

Thanks a lot for your help :)
I was still considering whether the back of the leaves is more sensitive to sunburn than the top. Any chance you might know that? Thanks again!
Oooh @sarah10orio I only discovered those recently and want one so badly! 👀💚 The leaf UNDERSIDES are even more striking than the topsides! ðŸĨ°ðŸĨ° Xxx
@AlertMontbretia the backs might be more sensitive at first, but plants can adapt to so many things. Are you thinking about a specific plant in particular?

Some plants have tougher leaves than others and they can handle the light from the backside ... but all plants will eventually turn the tops of their leaves to the sunlight.
@sarah10orio im thinking of my anthurium crystallinum wich isnt in a good shape btw ðŸ˜
