Juniper bonsai tips? Can this plant live indoors?

This has always been a bucket list for me and I love it soooo much! I hope to have this lil guy for a very long time. #Bonsai #juniperbonsai #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #PlantTherapy
@PlantJedi I was told the most important thing is to not underwater! So I water every 3-4 days ish and also keep in a small pot for a long time to promote tree growth ..?? That’s all the lady at the shop told me so I don’t know much haha
@PlantJedi thank you! I hope I get some more comments too!
@PlantJedi honestly I’ve just always wanted a bonsai but they’re so expensive!! I got this for my birthday last week! Funny story I went to the garden store with my mom to browse bec I was sad HAHA and she ended up buying me one for my birthday! Then as soon as we got back to my parents my younger sister brought out another of the exact same tree that she got me for my birthday! Haha turns out my sister was at the same shop at the same time as me and my mom without us knowing! And when my mom saw she had to distract me ! I was wondering why she was acting so weird LOL!! So I took one of them back the next day and exchanged them for a cute lil Zz Plant and a creeping inch baby
They like humidity & to stay moist! 6-8 hours of bright, indirect sunlight! We have to water our in the am and pm to keep from drying out!
@PlantJedi exchanged the second bonsai for this ZZ plant the next day and also somehow this inch plant and this bamboo stick ended up in my basket as well!
@elisenavidad amazing thanks for the advice! I like to keep a humidifier going constantly in the room it’ll live in! Do you think an east facing window sill will be enough? I’m guessing they don’t get sunburnt haha
@Luckyclovertrip believe it or not we took ours outside this weekend and I started browning bc it got too much direct light! I’d try east window for a week or so and see if you notice any big changes if not, it might be happy there!
Did you go harvest it yourself from the wild?
@PlantJedi I love the bamboo it’s sooo cute 😁 hopefully brings some luck! I love ZZ plants too they’re just the cutest! This one was only 30$, same price as the baby bonsai! And the ZZ also had a ton of little babies that I was able to put into a second pot! So now I’ve got 2 🤣. …..hmm maybe you should buy her the 200$ ZZ that’s a pretty sweet gift ! They have some variegated ones at my local shop but they were like 90$!
I overwatered mine and it died, only water it like every 10days or so
@AvidWorm haha no I wish I knew how to do that! I got it from the local shop near me
@AvidWorm oh my gosh really!! I’ve been told to never let it dry out 😭 now I’m confused
@PlantJedi here’s the extra ZZ bulb I pulled out ! Hopefully it’ll grow into a cute ZZ over time
I had a Ficus bonsai and another type bonsai in the way past, the Ficus was adopted late January early February and I love bonsai’s however it did not last I couldn’t bring it back it lost all its leaves because the Ficus are really hard to keep I had a tall real one years ago and it lost all its leaves so either I was doing something wrong or my environment isn’t right for it, so sorry I can’t offer and good advice try I’ll be watching the post here to learn and may consider another try at one, but so far it’s been painful to watch them just die and they are expensive.
@elisenavidad I’ve had this for exactly a week hah! It’s been on the east window and has done well so I’ll keep it here thanks!! Also it’s super dry where I live in the summer so maybe I’ll mist it a couple times a week too!
@PlantJedi that’s so sweet! I moved back to my family’s house for the time being as I’m leaving for Europe in the fall…..unfortunately leaving all of my plant babies behind…..so I hope I can train my (not green thumb) mom to care for my plants for the year I’m away šŸ˜šŸ¤ž
@SensationalKoa aww yea this is exactly why I hadn’tgotten myself one until now😭 I’m already so emotionally attached to this baby. This one was only 30$ because I think it’s still quite young. (definitely still my most expensive plant tho haha I don’t tend to spend more than 12$ on plants)
Hey guys šŸ‘‹šŸ˜€ yeah I had a tricky start with my Bonsai!! She's a Carmona Fukien Tea and arrived in very poor shape!! 😭 Half her leaves were yellowing and she was pot bound... I lost half of those leaves in the first few days! But she's now repotted and under a grow light and seems to be recovering 🄰

What I did learn is (as @elisenavidad says) they need a LOT of light (indirect, they CAN get sunburn... But an hour or less of direct sun will be fine! Or, a good grow light works perfectly!), good humidity is really important (they like it in the 50-60% range minimum really!) and don't let the soil dry out completely... I give mine a little water regularly, rather than drying and drenching (which is how Greg is kinda set up to suggest watering!), so I water a little every other day.

Of course, they're may be variations on this given that yours is a different species! Lol it's been a learning curve for me, to say the least šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤£šŸ¤£ but I love her! 🄰 Xxx
@Luckyclovertrip maybe this link can help you. https://www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-species/juniper
@PlantJedi 200$ does seem like a lot for a plant as common as a ZZ……but I feel like variegated ones are rare ish?? GET IT FOR YOUR GIRL!!!!! (Assuming she loves plants as much as you lol)
@SensationalKoa thanks a ton!! I just stalked ur account a bit 😁 your plants are SO CUTE and I loveee your unique planters
@Luckyclovertrip this link I gave about has a lot of information I think you should take a šŸ‘€ and examine.
@PlantJedi yep! I’m doing a full year study abroad for my last year of uni! One semester in the UK and one semester in The Netherlands! Sooo stoked šŸ˜ Italy is fricken amazing ! I did a 8 week solo backpacking trip across Italy a couple years ago! So let me know if you guys want any advice 😁
@PlantJedi hmmm take her on a trip where you guys can harvest a bunch of plants ??🫢
@Luckyclovertrip Aww, thanks Alex! Your welcome, look around that link it may help you, šŸ™šŸ»šŸ«¶šŸ»
@SensationalKoa this is amazing thank you for all of the help! I’m going to read this right now
@SensationalKoa oh no ! It says it can’t live indoorsšŸ¤” hmmm I wonder if that’s actually true
@Luckyclovertrip yes it does, and I wonder myself since all mine failed. Yet, I love me some cute Bonsai’s. Okay, back to the grind of work I go I’m outdoors working, loving the weather, beautiful day here.
@JenniB81 thank you for the advice! I have been watering just a little every few days when the top inch or so dries out! However through my research it says this plant needs to live outside 😭 it is so dry where I live ! I’m gonna attempt to keep it in my east facing window
@luckyclovertrip @plantJedi Love your juniper. I ordered some bonsai trees and delivery sent them back. Should have new ones soon.
@Godsgreenangel aww no! I hope they show up soon! Post a pic of them in here once they arrive please! I’m sure we’d all love to see :) I love it too! Pretty cute right 🄰 its name is Juni!
@PlantJedi sounds like you have a full calendar of travels, you better hire a Plant Doctor or sitter, like they do for animals to keep all those beauties in their Spa routine.
@PlantJedi ugh I hate that! Spend a few days alone with the plants to recharge 😭🤣 I can guarantee you will have a great time in Italy! That country is absolutely magical
I’m putting together a terrarium with bonsais in it. It’s the best way to keep them alive. I have a large juniper that I want to convert to a bonsai. I bought the copper wire for shaping it but I haven’t had the time, currently, it’s outside, kept moist the first two years and I’ll be digging it up to place in the terrarium with a bright light overhead before sealing it in. Might put in little gnomes or hobbits since it’ll be a gift for DH.
@AnthuriumQueen ooo post a pic in this chat once you’re done! Sounds awesome 😁
@PlantJedi Volunteers, that’s the BEST=more money šŸ’° to spend on plants abroad and get plane tickets for them too, lol. šŸ˜‚ then you can come back and show us what rarity you picked up in Italy just make sure it’s not a spaghetti squash, and make sure you visit Italy’s cheese capital and experience the fresh mozzarella making and eating and watch ā€œLetters to Julietā€ with your FiancĆ© where it will give you more special ideas to Roam while in Rome, Tuscany, Naples, etc.
@SensationalKoa oooo did you know you can visit the place where letters to Juliet was filmed! It’s in Verona ! I visited a couple years ago it was so amazing … here are a couple pics of me and a friend when we were there 3 years ago
@AnthuriumQueen oh, do post would love to see this so tag me in please.
@Luckyclovertrip yes, that’s why I told @PlantJedi to watch so he can take his FiancĆ© there and they can write the letters and place them there then after they are married years later go back to where they hid them in the wall, that is my favorite movie and by far a great depiction of beautiful Italy and it’s scenery
@Luckyclovertrip those pics are cool just like the movie what a memory to have.
Okay, hi-ho, hi-ho it’s back to work I go, nice spending lunch outdoors with all of you.
@SensationalKoa haha! It was amazing🄰 trip of a lifetime. Have a great rest of your day at work, thank you for all the advise again
@PlantJedi will do after work ! Keep in mind I was staying in the cheapest hostels possible and wasn’t eating anything but frozen grocery store food 🤣 so keep in mind I can’t help with anything too cultured Bahahha
@AvidWorm interesting you mentioned this. I have zero experience with Bonsai, but was just thinking that I would like to harvest a maple seedling and make my own bansai set up. Also I have a giant juniper in my yard, probably 40 years old. I pretend it’s an over grown bansai sometimes and just have fun pruning it, but I wonder if I could take a cutting or propagate a small piece? This will be my new thing to research.
@AvidWorm I think this has some potential! šŸ˜„
@luckyclovertrip I think you'll be fine Alex!! I don't really believe in indoor/ outdoor plants... Obviously a full sized version of your bonsai would be... Well, a tree! Lmao 🤣 so would be outside, but I think bonsai cultivators know that most of us will be keeping them indoors... So I wouldn't worry too much about it xx
@nellz4estfairyz OOO YES!!! DO IT!!!!! we need updates. That tree is gorgeous
@JenniB81 thank you !!!
@Luckyclovertrip @PlantJedi
Honestly I don't know much about bonsai but I AM fascinated by them!! And of course, I want one lol. I wish you luck though, Alex! It looks really cool! šŸ˜€
@JesssJungle thanks!! I am really excited
@PlantJedi will do, @Luckyclovertrip hahaha! Sounds like college food, how could you? The home of the best foods and desserts you’ll see, feel, taste, on Earth, the pizza the best not sold like it is here by the slice and the Awesome Gelato and the Art everywhere and especially the Vatican, one needs a two month stay to view the beauty and foods etc. of Italy
Oh how cool! Keep me posted on progress! I would like to have a bonsai especially juniper if they produce the berries, I use the leaves and berries of juniper in some of the soaps and candles I make—so I’m sending you lots of positive energy for happy growth! 🪓
@SensationalKoa haha! Don’t worry I still tried most of the best food šŸ’— I planned on spending only 2 weeks in Italy and going to other countries….ended up staying in Italy for 8 weeks HAHA
@HanSolo87 oooo that’s very cool maybe I’ll be able to harvest from this baby in the future! I will keep you updated 🄹
@luckyclovertrip if you make it to Scotland Alex, give me a shout! 🄰 Xx
@JenniB81 omggg Jenni! I will 100% be visiting Scotland this fall! The city I am going to be living in is only an hour or 2 ride from Edinburgh I believe!
@luckyclovertrip no way!! Coooool! 🄳 To be fair, most places in Scotland are only a couple of hours from Edinburgh!! Hahaha 🤣🤣 you can literally drive from the top of Scotland to the bottom of England in a day (if you REALLY want to! Lmao it's still a trek but... Just not USA sized trek!! Haha 🤣). Are you in the FB group Hun? You should totally join them you can DM me when you're here and I can show you Edinburgh 🄰 xxx
@JenniB81 oooo yes!!! Im excited to be in a smaller place than Canada! It’s hard for me to imagine you can drive from top to bottom in a day 🤣it would take weeks here! What is the FB group! I would love to meet up once I’m in the UK! šŸ’—šŸ’—
My thoughts are any plant can survive anywhere as long as getting the three or four basic items it need ļæ¼
Let me try this again. Any plant can survive anywhere as long as it’s getting the needs required. Having said that I am the king of killing succulents. I’m guessing if you did some research about bonsai probably you will learn a lot. I don’t know. I don’t know enough about any of this, but I thought I’d say yes hello ļæ¼
Lol John @warmstarsedge Hello! šŸ‘‹ 😁 I totally agree! I do have a bonsai... But not sure I'm qualified to give any educated advice about them yet... I haven't killed it! Lmao šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚ that's about as good as it gets at the mo (but mine was pretty unwell when she arrived so that's more of an accolade than it sounds!! Haha šŸ˜‚)
@luckyclovertrip it's "The Amigos of Greg" lol or you can try and find me @jenni.benyon) and shoot me a friend request and I'll send you an invite 🄰

That goes for everyone btw! Lol you're all welcome! šŸ¤— It's gone off with a bang! Hard to believe it's only been up and running for a few days lol 🤣 but it's great for DMs, sharing vids etc so come along and say hi! Xxx
Eastern Leaf website has great information on bonsai. I’ve tried my fair share of juniper and they hate me. I now have a Fukien tea tree doing very well and a lavender star also doing ok. She’s still recovering from a cat attack. I have mine in gritty, rocky soil so I soak water every 2-3 days. Good luck and I hope yours does great!
There’s a lot of great insights in the r/bonsai subreddit. I don’t even have any bonsai and I follow the subreddit for fun.
These guys really do best outside. Don’t forget, it may be small, but it’s still a tree!

Junipers are sensitive to having wet feet, so while it’s important to water often, you’ll want to make sure he drains well and dries out before watering again (similar to monstera or philodendron). How often that happens depends on the soil, so just keep a close eye on it until you learn the right rhythm.

They do like lots of light, but are best placed somewhere where they have protection from wind, as that can dry them out too much.

It’s a super cute little tree, and I wish you all the best with it!
@JenniB81 awww yes I will join! I dont really use facebook but I will figure it out
@PricklyThumb hmm okay I’ll check the website out thanks!
@ESylvanus thanks!! If it hates the inside this time next month maybe I’ll move it outside :)
@Luckyclovertrip That’s okay to try, but be sure to watch it closely for yellowing from lack of light. Also be aware that the absolutely need a dormancy period over the winter, which needs to be triggered by cold temperatures. Just a heads up for the future.
@ESylvanus hmm okay! It gets pretty damn cold where I live I wonder if it would even make it out of our Canada winters alive haha
@Luckyclovertrip What I did for mine (when I lived inthe midwest) is leave them out until the lows are in the 30s for a couple of nights, then move it into an unheated garage. You’ll have to make sure it gets plenty of light, but being in the garage will let it get cold without having to endure the worst of the weather. If you have a bonsai club close to you, they can be an invaluable source of information tailored to your climate. I’d recommend checking in with them if you can!
@Luckyclovertrip being king of overwatering I would say maybe back off a little on the water if you have that tendency to overwater if you underwater, at least you have a chance of bringing it back if you overwater you cause all kinds of problems that will create Nats and fungus root rot is mostly because of overwatering and root water route could be a case of fungal or gnats or other bug basically needs to be sanitized anyway OK have fun bye
@Luckyclovertrip I probably would not run dry out, but it would also not let it overwater ļæ¼
@Luckyclovertrip I hate Facebook ļæ¼
@elisenavidad Heyy this is the post I made that I said I’d tag you in!! There are some really helpful comments in here
Put the tree outside, it will thrive outside. More light, won't dry as easily.
