Parlour Palm
Hey guys! I took over a dying palm and I have no experience with palms, but it hasnβt grown even a centimeter in 4 months. Are they just slow growers? Itβs not really crispy anywhere, just 2 small brown tips. Is there anything Iβm doing wrong? Itβs in a plastic container (with drainage) and well draining soil. The pot is about 2-3 inches bigger than the root ball. It sits in the window sill and gets constant humidity.

@robbi_rose oof, well, Iβm sorry to say I have no idea. I have never been very successful with palms π¬ π€·ββοΈ But I do know there are two lovely people here on Greg that are! Tacy @BuffCaperspurge and Darah @Ponytailmom π«Ά Do either of you have any advice for Robbi @robbi_rose ?
My parlour palm does best when shes close to other palms. Shes grown well beyond what they say. Shes getting a lot of transpiration from my Areca, Majesty, cat & to lesser extent Lady palm. I use large grow lights; Mollys soilless Aroid tropical plant mix and always bottom water them. Humidity isnt essential but they get some from the large humidofier for my BoPs & Ti plants, i dont bother w brown tips, thats just prixe u pay for having palms, if i see brown thruout a frond or more, i may trim them or if more than just a couple, i prune the entire palm leaf. Soon u see new growth coming up in a clump soon to expand into their fronds. I mostly just kinda comb thru my palms during inspections @ if theres small brown sticks close to dirt, i prune them. Idky but ive had a lot of success w/palms of all variarions. My Kentia & Windmill are smaller now so they sit together, but since theyre so full; the combing & getting under the bulk of growth shows u any places rhat may need clipped teimmed or warched over. The only issue ive ever had w/palms were mealy bugs & since their hiding places r so obvious, theyre pretty easy to find. A q-tip swabbed w/70% isopropol alcohol is enough to suffercate the varmits & luckily rhe ones that r pests usuallt cannot fly as only the males r able to so the moment u see white fuzz or spec of cottony material do the q-tip, quarantine the plant & keep an eye on for a while. Ive gone thru it a few times but it never amounted to anyrhing much if ur diligent. Corners r regal places for large palms but please give fronds room to breathe all around the palm. I love all my palms and they r pretty easy to keep healhty. They do go theu growth spurts so give their growth clearance ao as not to stunt them . If u love them as i do, ur instincts guide u well!!
My answer to anything dying or what appears to be dead is 511 fish fertilizer. I swear it will make a rock grow new legs & walk away πΏ
That being said I have still yet to keep one alive even though I have three different types of palms growing right now. A date palm from seed & I think 2 saw palmettos.
you can foliar feed the fish fertilizer if you want βoutside onlyβ and because youβre in Canada, I would suggest against it of bears are an issue there.
The plants here in eastern North Carolina on the outside definitely get blasted with rain The Palms seem to need it or they get dry and they brown up. Been dry here this year

@BuffCaperspurge could you share a picture or so of your windmill palms so I can see if I have a windmills or saw palmettos pls Ty πthey were a local dig pictures above are a place that I have done work at not mine οΏΌ
@OhGollyItsJolly sure and feel free to check out my Oasis anytime!! Her name is Madonna if that helps!! Lol
@BuffCaperspurge i will send to u once i can get to my plant stand or just check out my Oasis!
@BuffCaperspurge actually here you go. 2nd pic is date palm from seed yes the date isnβt looking the best. One of those things I planted in like way early never seen it do anything past a single leaf and then as soon as it starts, sprouting the second leaf it gets lost in all the other plants out there lol itβs gonna need some nursing back to health Iβm sure. Fish fertilizer for the win? Or do you have a better option? Just let it grow? οΏΌοΏΌ
@OhGollyItsJolly actually tge second plant in ur first pic looks like a windmill. The date palm im not familiar w/but resembles my Lady palm in leaf appearance. One tell-tale sign of a Lady Palm r the roots; which look like electrical cords, wrapped around w/a bluish color wire-like cord. I have never seen roots anything like them anywhere else!
@DreamMachine thanks for tagging them Nadia!

@BuffCaperspurge So true!!! Gotta love Tacy! π©·π©·π©· Love you girlie, I've missed you.
BTW Tacy IS the QUEEN of palms. She is the best one talk to on here regarding palms. You are in great hands with her. Most of us can't successfully grow palms indoors. But, Tacy has them mastered. I ALWAYS refer palm question to her.
