Any ideas why silver dragon tips are all turning yellow/ ...

It’s in self watering and 65-75% humidity, near a south window. I spray it with fungal copper soap regularly. #AlocasiaAddicts #HappyPlants #SilverDragon #Alocasia

This is a humidity problem. The card says it’s at a West window. These plants prefer bright shade, no direct light, not even through a window or the margins will crisp and end up yellowing. It starts with the tips. I have their sisters (the black Velvet Alocasia) and keep them in bright shade, no direct exposure, and at a humidity level of 65-70% with a fan running 24/7. No crispy tips or edges. Might I suggest moving it to where the sun won’t strike its foliage? It can be just left or right of the window but no direct exposure. Also, get a humidifier that can target their needs and be placed right next to it so it gets what it needs. Always remember that water is for the roots and humidity is for the foliage. You can have them in Leca or any low-friction medium and they will still have sone issue if the humidity is off. @LauraLynne
What type of water are you using? Tap..well...filtered? My Silver Dragon hit the struggle bus hard using my well water...to hard to many minerals. I am personally not a fan of the self watering pots and any alocasia. I have tried a few and almost always unalived them. I have switched to LECA with my Silver Dragon and it is much happier and growing.
@Halfhalf I only use bottle water that had sat out in an open jar 24hours+ or distilled pothos water.
Mine didn’t do well in a self watering pot either. And I ended up losing it completely when I did a cooper fungicide dunk. I am however having good success growing it’s corms in fluval and perlite. Im debating whether to leave it in that or not.
@LauraLynne yea I would assume it is actually getting "over watered" the self watering is keeping the soil to wet and not allowing it to dry out at all.
@Halfhalf That is so interesting. I was under the assumption they liked constant moisture like calatheas. So I should maybe stop filling it and try watering with Greg’s schedule? I thought they weren’t supposed to dry out. If they are that’s definitely the problem.πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ
@LauraLynne I am sure there is someone that can explain exactly why this is happening. I am guessing it has something to do with the soil make up that is staying wet...to dense and staying wet is not allowing oxygen to the roots or something that I am sure is not my area of expertise...lol. I know my Silver Dragon and and my Polly came with a self watering pot...they both started to yellow like yours...got all the way down to 1 leaf left on both...I moved the silver Dragon to LECA and the polly to a very light coco mix. I water the poly on the Gregg schedule and the dragon just gets the water switched out once a month...they have both started to regrow and I have new healthy leaves on both
Here is a before and after...you can see she only had one semi healthy leaf left when she went into the LECA. You can now see that sad little leaf did not make it is hanging off the side...but she has 2 brand new growths!
Hi! I think everyone here has good advice - ultimately my guess is that the roots are beginning to rot. I personally don’t trust self watering pots for anything because I like to *know* how much water my plants are getting. I’d repot it in another pot with fresh soil mix and check the roots while you’re at it! πŸŒ±β˜€οΈβ€οΈ
@RealSimpleMama I’ve pulled it out and you’ve got to see this #RootPorn . I’m dead. πŸ˜‚ Its definitely not rotting but I’m still repotting it in a chunkier mix and not self-watering pot.
@LauraLynne gorgeous! I can’t wait to see all the new growth you’ll be getting soon!
@AnthuriumQueen Ok I think that you’ve figured it out. This stand was originally here and I had moved it to the circle but from your advice it seems like that is what pissed the Alocasia off. I’ve moved it back where it was and won’t move it again!!🀣
They won’t cosmetically recover but make sure you keep them protected from that bright, direct light. Another thing you want to do is monitor their nutrient uptake. They are actively growing and will require nutrients to look their best. Best of luck and happy growing! 🌿
