When to repot?

I purchased this Australis online in January. I did read they are a faster growing Hoya. I repotted it into a nursery pot that fit this cover pot thereโ€™s about 2โ€ below the nursery pot so if any excess water drips, itโ€™s caught. But rarely is there standing water. When I planted it, itโ€™s in a suuuper chunky soil mix (orchid bark, coco chips, perlite, and a touch of succulent soil) and the roots were maybe halfway the depth of the nursery pot. I water it maybe every 12-14 days? When I water, I flush it. I let the water run through the mix and it immediately drains the bottom. So last time I watered, there were no roots coming out. Yesterday, I saw this. But I donโ€™t feel like the pot is crowded either?

Iโ€™m still getting the hang of the Hoya and its needs. If it grew this much in 2 weeks, Iโ€™m nervous for another 2 weeks if I donโ€™t take action. Any help is much appreciated!

@TheOddAsity itโ€™s HAPPY!!!! You can do a few things. Gently pull and look at whatโ€™s going on. They could just be normal roots with no over crowding. Which you could just tuck them back in. Or you could just leave it and see what happens in the next two weeks or you can do a @sarahsalith move and just trim them up!! Me-I would pull and see whatโ€™s going on but itโ€™s totally how you feel about it!! Definitely a very happy girl!!
@Rockrlee @AwesomePlants @HoyaAddict @Boymom-plantmom โ€ฆ youโ€™re the ones that come to mind!
@Boymom-plantmom pull as in, pull it out of the pot to check on it?
@TheOddAsity yes very gently! You will be able to see if they just need tucked in. Should come out all together
I think you can repot it. Just make sure the pot isnโ€™t too big!

@Boymom-plantmom ok. Iโ€™m not afraid to try. I just know this chunky mix itโ€™s in isnโ€™t held together except by what grows in it. ๐Ÿ˜‚
@SimpleSucculent Iโ€™m facing a space crisis! I donโ€™t want to repot yet! I havenโ€™t figured out where to put them all! ๐Ÿ˜‚ my sister has brought me like 12 full size plants in 3 weeks ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ
@TheOddAsity you could just snip or leave if you donโ€™t donโ€™t to unearth it yet :)
@Boymom-plantmom Iโ€™m gonna try. I think tucking the roots back in is a good idea.
I recommend a larger โ€œterra cottaโ€ pot. Rarely do I have any luck with plastic pots.
@SubtleEagleclaw howโ€™s that? Iโ€™m curious because I presently have 11 Hoyas. I have 4 matured Hoyas in terra cotta & all the others are in plastic.. Whatโ€™s your theory on the containers? Please advise. Thank you.
@TheOddAsity Hey April, if you just repotted it in January, you definitely have time yet for it to fill out. Hoyas like to be root crowed. If the water is caught in the bottom of the cache pot, I think you will be ok. I know itโ€™s a whole other plant species but I had my Regal Shields doing the same heavy root growth out of the plastic pot into the cache pot. I made sure that the run off water was always full so that those roots werenโ€™t drying & affected. My Regal loved it. And kept pushing new leaves out all winter long. I have sinced repotted him. So if you could hang in a little longer, I would recommend doing so.
@SubtleEagleclaw I have read that Hoyas like terracotta. I have some in terracotta and some not. I do make sure my soil mix is super chunky to help offset the plastic (as I am assuming plastic would trap moisture suffocating a Hoya). So far things are ok. But I watch my plastic carefully.
@TheOddAsity Ahhhโ€ฆthat makes sense. Good to know. Thanks for mentioning that. Iโ€™m having second thoughts on planting my Super Silver in the clear plastic container. Iโ€™ve noticed 2 leaves were already suffering (overwatered).
@Rockrlee ok, thatโ€™s good to know too. Because that was my worry that those growing roots would dry out. I have some other plants that need a repot (including a new Hoya that was from a box store) and I know I have limited pots ๐Ÿ˜‚ I should be more than happy to go buy pots- but my birthday is in a week and I PROMISED my kids I wouldnโ€™t until after
@Rockrlee I have been reading about those plastic orchid pots if you wanna put them in plastic. ANDโ€ฆ Iโ€™m down the PON rabbit hole too ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ I bought a heuschkeliana variegata I wanna plant in PON sooo badly. Howโ€™s your journey coming?
@TheOddAsity I finally received my Black Margin from Canopy. He is tiny but really healthy & NO bugs. Thank GOD. Iโ€™m really trying to stick with shops that Iโ€™ve researched for pest free plants but you can never be ๐Ÿ’ฏ sure. Iโ€™ve even received mite issue plants from more reputable suppliers that we have all ordered from. As for PONโ€ฆ.I need to order some & fluval. I harvested some corms from my Big Boy Regal & Alo Mello that are sitting in mushy perlite. I want to transfer them to fluval before they become mush too.
@TheOddAsity I have some of my mature Hoyas in Terra Cotta in my skylights. Obviously they are going to be watered more frequently. The others in plastic some original nursery pots & I have repotted in the clear plastic orchid pots.
@TheOddAsity the Super Silver Krohniana had a few overwatered leaves. Iโ€™m wondering if planting it directly in the Terra cotta would be better for this particular Hoya.
@TheOddAsity your plant shouldnโ€™t decline because the pot is getting too small for it. It may not continue to grow as prolifically. It may need watering more often.
Being in too small of a pot will NOT hurt it... it will just slow down growth. I'd leave it alone and check it every couple weeks because those are thin roots, when they get fat, you repot.
I agree with @Boymom-plantmom , roots poking out don't always mean an upsize in pot size. Sometimes you just need to reposition and plant higher in pot. Hoyas, in my opinion, are pretty resilient, so don't worry about it throwing a fit with you repositioning it.

@Rockrlee I donโ€™t know if itโ€™s a habit I should change, but I started spraying down new plants with insecticide and fungicide the minute I bring them in. One of the plants my sister bought me had fungus gnats and even though it was quarantined they still made their way over to my others. I donโ€™t know how even reputable sellers can prevent nature from happening. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ just ordered the stuff for DIY PON. Iโ€™ve been reading up on all the great ways to grow Hoyas and how mixing the fluval with PON even on aroids is awesome. So Iโ€™m gonna do some propagation experiments to figure all this out!!
@TheOddAsity have you tried these BTI drops for fungus gnats? 1-2 drops per gallon of water thatโ€™s it. I water drench the soil & I have minimal gnat issues. It works by killing the larvae before they become adults.
@Rockrlee I have never heard of it. I will look into them! I usually donโ€™t have issues with them but man, this plant that came in has them!
