How to identify root rot?

hello lovelies! i pulled up one of my marigolds because all of the flowers it grew would die. i’m suspecting root rot, but i’m not sure what i’m looking for. can someone more experienced tell me if this is root rot?

@AlwaysRaine Evelyn is correct. I plant marigolds every year around my tomato plants because they keep away all manner of pests. Marigolds are annuals, so they will die at the end of the summer. Also, they bloom all summer and each flower lasts awhile and then the petals fall away and the flower makes seeds. If you want your plant to bloom longer though, cut off each flower when the bloom starts to die back before the seeds get made. That way the plant will keep making more flowers for a longer time because each plant has to make a certain amount of seeds before the whole plant dies. Cutting off the flowers before the seeds get made is called “deadheading” the plant. Doing that to each plant all summer will give you the best results to enjoy your plants as long as possible. This works for most annual plants.
Root rot isn’t something to worry about with outdoor plants in the soil because the water naturally spreads out into the soil and does not stay to rot any roots. It pretty much just applies to house plants or outside plants in containers where water might stay around too long.
I think your roots look good! You can wash away a bit more dirt to be certain, but If they are white like that, you're all good! If they are black, that's root rot. It'll also kinda just fall off, and possibly have a bad smell.
Those white roots look good. I can’t tell if there are some thicker black-ish mushy roots mixed in or if that’s dirt?
@JesssJungle great answer Jess!
@AlwaysRaine Quinn marigolds flower and die back but… just pinch/cut those dead heads off and this will encourage new flowers on your plant. It should bloom all summer long. And really takes the heat! Your plant looks very healthy otherwise! By the way, welcome to Greg! 😉
@AC73LoveCats this is super helpful, tysm!! 💜
@AlwaysRaine You’re welcome! Thanks for the best answer.
