Beware of fake marimo moss balls!

Be aware if you purchase Marimo Moss Balls. There are a lot of untrustworthy sellers out there. Notice my photo. ……….Looking closely you can see that the large, dark balls aren’t exactly round, which is natural. I even trimmed off some growth to enhance the spherical shape. ……….On the other hand I got the small, light green balls from a bad source. They are far too perfect in shape and there are no stray delicate strings of moss that start to extend off of the main plant. They are also much more firm. ………. Apparently some sellers use a felt, or other material, ball to form the structure and then just attach moss to the outside of the sphere. So if the balls are too regular, pass them by! 🟒🟒🟒 #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #Marimo
I’m sorry that happened to you. Thank you for sharing with #GregGang
@Captjo You’re welcome! Knowledge is the best defense! 😊
Do you need a terrarium to grow moss?
Thank you so much for explaining!!! I have 3 in my guppy tank. They are so cute, I love them!!!!
I’ve also seen people trying to pass off plastic balls wrapped in java moss. Technically a β€œmoss ball” but definitely not a Marimo! Sorry you ran into an unscrupulous seller 😞
@TruthfulApricot I trust Moss Amigos!!! They’re a fantastic seller and have the cutest set ups
@TruthfulApricot the two I have are legit and my favorite local plant shop actually sold them
@EdmundG Nothing fancy, just a clear glass container that holds water. They must be completely submerged. I’ve seen them in small bottles with corks, dinner glasses, wine glasses, etc. I have mine a in square vase that I rarely used. You can hit a dollar store and you’re bound to find something you can use.
@Plantmomma3 They’re beautiful in aquariums and fish love to nibble on them. In fact, sometimes the balls disappear when hungry fish decide to have a midnight snack! πŸ˜‚
@ESylvanus I’ve heard of that also. I don’t understand why people can’t just be nice to each other and I never will. It even takes less energy that being ugly. smh We manage it on Greg quite well. ❀️❀️❀️
@ShinyBudew Thanks! I’ll keep that in mind! ❀️
Wow that’s messed up. Always scammers out there. I deal with horrible scams everyday at work. Some ruin peoples lives. So this is good info to know. I haven’t seen this scam before. It’s like they wrapped marbles in felt or something. Definitely looks fake when compared side by side. Thanks for warning everyone
@SirLiquorice You’re welcome. It’s disgusting!
Who would have thought that scammers would sell fake moss balls. Sorry this happened. πŸ€ͺ
@Pegster Yep! Seems like it’d be more trouble to scam than sell the real thing. They could even buy them the size of mine and cut them up into smaller ones to sell. That’s how they propagate anyways. They’re a kind of algae.
@TruthfulApricot well we have plants to keep us calm πŸ’šπŸͺ΄
Thank you for the information @TruthfulApricot 😊
This is not my plant but I saw it on Moss Amigos. It has a beanie with a bottle of wine and glasses. This gal is living her best life!πŸ˜‚
@CoolNoblefir So cute. All that’s necessary is being able to change the water every other week so almost anything goes! 😁
@TruthfulApricot they had cowboy hats too. It was too cute and I thought you might enjoy.😊
Yea real marimo moss balls are hard to come by nowadays because of the invasive muscles they’re infested with.. sorry to hear you got fake ones πŸ˜•..
@NMazon Thank you. ❀️
