Hear ye hear ye, this is the first of an onslaught of a b...

Hear ye hear ye, this is the first of an onslaught of a blissful #orchidlover's and newly converted #hoya fan's spam posts. So much is going well - at least in the plant realm, and that's what we are here for, isn't it?
First off: cattleya bliss πŸ˜€. just look at these two. The first (unless Greg messes up the order of my pictures again πŸ˜‰) is my snowflake frosty. She is the first catt whose bloom will be 100% the result of my (and her) effort. Just imagine all those blooms. I only took the plunge into the cattleya realm last year, and I was very skeptical about being able to provide enough light in my dreary northern conditions to get one to bloom. But hey, let this be your sign to get a cattleya 🌸🌸🌸
And the other one, the nakornchaisri ruby? Just look at that plump new pseudobulb. Isn't it gorgeous? And those new roots? She arrived wrapped tightly into a big piece of bark - which might have made sense where she came from, but made 0 sense in my home, so I had to throw caution out of the window and repot immediately. Cattleya lovers will know the risk. She lost all but one root, and I realized later that she must have had some snail eggs on that remaining one, so snails snacked on it for a long time before I noticed. so she was basically rootless. But she pulled through. After months and months, the new bulb is coming in, as are the roots. And she doesn't even seem too stressed. These plants are marvelous. #newgrowth #happyplants

We all love some exotic orchids don't we? Although i've been more interested in Novelty Phals, Phal look-alikes and "jalapeΓ±o" Dendrobiums :). Might look into Catt in the future

BTW great name. Starting to think German names would somehow take over the future of my plant collecting
@Araceae I also got a few (still very tiny) novelty phals and warm growing species, so I can relate. I plan to fill my apartment with overwhelming fragrance in every corner. Hence the cattleyas. The snowflake frosty is supposed to have a great smell and the color is just gorgeous by all accounts. And, provided I get it to bloom, the nakornchaisri is a veeeeery flouffy one. So probably also has a fragrance that blows me away.
Which name? And why German names in your collection? Sry, if I'm a bit dense, it has been a long morning for me.
Ah. The Schneewittchen? Well, I'm German, and she *is* white as snow, at least at first.
@MusicalRedmint yah the Schneewittchen. When you try to pronounce it in English it's kinda cute. But I'm probably pronouncing it wrong πŸ˜‘
@Araceae Hmm. I'm not great at phonetics, but try shnay-vhitt*en. The * has not even a sound that comes closer. Try a hissing snake sound, but produced in your throat with a lowered tongue πŸ˜‰. Hm maybe like the y from York or yen, but more pronounced/ more air coming through. And yes, it's cute in German as well πŸ˜‰.
But why all the German in your collection?
Im looking into a few mini cattelaya and dendrobiums for my climatarium
Love them both but my fave is still@probably oncidium
@MusicalRedmint My Phal kept blooming after the repot not a single flower die. And it’s giving me 2 keikis. I’m so excited!!
U r for sure the greatest orchid lover out there! It's like your collection is never ending, which is a great thing ofc! I luv me some orchids!
@TheConservator I love my little sophronitis cernua. Will post a picture once I'm home. Steady grower, as long as it's mounted, no drama. And sooo so oo tiny. With comparably big blooms. Am thinking about adding a coccinea or maxillaria at some point.
@Plants_Galore that sounds great. Keep on being this successful. And many blooms
@MusicalRedmint maxillaria are really cool to Had one like 25 yrs ago but have no clue what
Think it had just an all dark burgandy flower but not even positive about that πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
That was all in my kill more than you keep phase lol! Just learning and wanted it all ! Lol
@starrykentia not sure about that. There are so many others on here, probably with bigger collections than mine (which, for that matter, in its variety is a rather young one). They are just not, as.... vocal as I am right now πŸ˜‰
And who doesn't love a beautiful and special orchid ❀️
@MusicalRedmint congratulations 🎊 on all your recent successes! Can’t wait to see those flowers open up 🫣. My first Cattleya existed, despite my inexperience but didn’t make it in the long haul. Got a rhynchobrassoleya in November. The flowers were beautiful! 1st pic shows new roots exploring the bark, yay! The beallara is more oncidium like so a new venture for me. She’s done blooming too and it looks like she’s throwing out a new leaf 🫠
@MusicalRedmint but great to see you're not gonna stop too soon soo, there still is a great possibility your oasis might end up having almost every specie!
@MariansOasis thank you 😊 me neither. Especially after my Chantilly Lace twinkle threw in the towel (dropped her first reblooming buds) after receiving too much smoke during Christmas time πŸ˜‰ can't win them all. I remember your cattleya, I think. It's it the beautiful orange one that was in the background when you showed the beallara to me, isn't it?
And yay on new roots and new leaves and probably new blooms soon.
@StarryKentia
Erh... not likely. Not even one from every genus anytime soon. πŸ˜… the orchid world is ridiculously vast, even excluding the myriad hybrids that are our there, I would say, having every species is not feasible. In the phalaenopsis genus alone I would go bankrupt, let alone the cattleya or oncidium "families". And even outside those there is a wealth of others.
Apart from that, I don't want them all. There are really stinky ones out there, so that's a no from me. πŸ‘ƒπŸ¦¨πŸ˜…
I leave that to people more orchid crazy than me
Yeah alright I have absolutely no idea, but it sounds awesome! How often does an orchid bloom? I should get one myself! Hehe, and btw, do they have a smell?
Oh no πŸ™ˆ I didn’t know she threw in the towel!! 😭 😭 When do you think she’ll rebloom? Yes the Cattleya is orange ☺️. Love your plan to fill your place with fragrance. Only two of my indoor orchids have scent. The recent Yellow Bird is fragrant at night. It’s lovely to climb into bed in a room full of orchids scent!
@MusicalRedmint same here!! No Bulbophyllums for me! Dead animal, dog πŸ’©, rotting garbage No Thanks πŸ™‚β€β†”οΈ
@TheConservator here she is. The mother of many many mini catts. Isn't she delightful, even without blooms? And she is growing another new growth already.
Since you seem to be searching for minis, I'm throwing in my leptoptes for good measure. Now idea, when I will get it to bloom, but I'm the pictures online it looked so cute πŸ˜‰
@StarryKentia many many do, but not most of the phal hybrids you get in normal stores. In Germany they have branches out and carry some novelty phals (phalaenopses that have some warm blooming phals crossed in and this have a slight fragrance ) and fragrant oncidiums, but these are still rather the exception and not the rule. To buy a 100%fragrant one you would need to know what you are looking for and look at orchid nurseries. Or, I guess, luck out πŸ˜‰
How often it blooms also varies widely across genera. If you are talking "standard" phalaenopsis, those technically bloom once a year (but for months on end). You can trick it into blooming more but you shouldn't do this too often to keep it healthy.
Cattleyas and oncidiums bloom once their new pseudobulb has grown (if they decide at that point they are happy enough). This can vary from once a year to two or even three times a year. But they bloom for shorter than your typical phal, depending on the species "only" 2-3 weeks.
Go for it. They are absolutely great and addictive
@MariansOasis No worries, the candle light was worth it. And at least I have seen her bloom once already. And she is a ridiculously fast grower, so I won't have to wait for ages, I guess. I've heard she can manage even up to three growth cycles a year. And that matches the speed I see mine growing at. It was just a bit frustrating because she really was almost ready. Basically she had buds as big as the snowflake frosty now has.
So I guess fingers crossed, that I don't ruin them last minute again πŸ˜…
That night fragrance sounds great. It will be ages until my brassavola hybrids are far enough. But since many hoyas supposedly develop their fragrances at night, I will not be missing out till then... provided I get them to bloom.
πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜…. Yep. Nor anything that i have to repot every year and nothing desiduous. So no catasetums for me either. But yeah, no bulbophyllum, thanks. Though I've heard some don't smell as bad as expected.
@MusicalRedmint that is awesome! The minis are way cool i think
I found a orchidseller a townaway on facebook waitingto hear back if i can visit or its online only.
@MusicalRedmint mother of many mini’s πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ₯°
@TheConservator Thanks 😊 they are. Good luck.
@MariansOasis not many, not yet. And downside of some is that they are, you've guessed it, not fragrant πŸ˜€
@MusicalRedmint oh no i just like the idea of incorporating languages into plant names. Makes it more fun [despite the fact i'm Singaporean Chinese Hokkien, but speak neitherMandarin nor Hokkien,, my school tried teaching me Malay but i can't, and my English ain't even that good either. Best i can do is Scientific name language]ese
@Araceae I understand. You've got to have a theme, when making things πŸ˜€ I tried with literary themes. Otherwise how would I remember? πŸ˜…
I also like languages but am not really all that proficient because i miss patience and consistency. . Right now, I'm muddling through with Korean on duolingo. After trying and failing with many others throughout the years. Week not day long, but not getting anywhere with them either. English worked out half okay, I guess, because I like to read and I reached a level, that I was able to The rest .... nah. I can understand snippets here and there. That's it.
Wow thanks for the advice! If I'm buying one, you'd be the first person I ask questions too!
@StarryKentia 🌸🌿🌸 again: many great people here, especially regarding phals which seem to be at the start of most people's orchid obsessions πŸ˜‰ I just love the #orchidlovers tag on Greg and the people following it.
I should totally follow it then!
And yeah I'm done!
@StarryKentia done as in a newly converted orchid lover?
