Vanilla Orchid Roots??? #orchidlovers #vanillaorchid #newgrowth #propagationstation #happyplants
I repotted this Vanilla Orchid Planifolia yesterday and put a cutting of it in my prop box. I just checked on it and there are ALREADY roots!! Like what??? 🀯 If it's really this fast I don't think I'll prop in water ever again. πŸ˜πŸ‘
1ft to light, indirect
5” pot with drainage
Last watered 1 week ago
Whaaaaa? @princesspitstop That’s amazing! I’ve been really loving perlite to prop in. And I’ve been going EXTRA classy with propping in ziplock bags! It’s so easy! And you just breathe more c02 in the bag when it’s looking droopy πŸ˜‚ I’m sure my husband loves my collection of prop bags too 🀣
…also is that a sword on your counter?? πŸ˜‚πŸ—‘οΈ
@DreamMachine HAHAHA! Yes ma'am it is! Dub has a collection of swords, spears and weird weapons. He wanted to sell some of them because they have been collecting dust so I was in the middle of taking pictures of them. However, you can't sell them on Marketplace or Offer up so I'm not sure what I'm going to do. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
@DreamMachine I keep forgetting that I can propagate in sandwich bags!! πŸ˜‚
@princesspitstop πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Of course he does!! Can you word your listings differently at all? Like β€œProp sword, definitely not real!” πŸ˜‚
@DreamMachine πŸ˜‰Actually...now that you mention it I have seen a listing for an actual gun once titled car seat if you can believe that! Lol
@princesspitstop LOL, I would believe anything happening in Texas 🀣
@princesspitstop Wow! Heidi, way to make it look easy! That’s impressive that your vanilla propped so simply! Are you just using good old reg perlite? Have your vanillas flowered? @DreamMachine propping in a bag I could never do. I tried it, but I’m literally terrible at it. The only thing I could ever do that was a trick with Ziplocs is making an omelette in them. Ha ha ha, otherwise… I’m out… πŸ˜¬πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈπŸ€£
@Idplantthat Lol an omelette 🀣 yes ma'am just perlite and water!
@princesspitstop omelette in hot water in a plastic sack with boiling water.. super easy and kinda fun. πŸ€£πŸ˜‰
@Idplantthat Somehow I knew exactly what you were talking about. 🀣 Don't ask me how hahaha Oh I forgot to answer you earlier about the flowers on the orchid.... NOPE lol I haven't had it a year yet and I heard that it takes special conditions for it to happen. Like don't you have to pollinate them yourself or something?
@Idplantthat AND the Watch Chain!! I totally almost killed it but it's growing back now. πŸ˜πŸŽ‰
@princesspitstop ha ha ha ha I love you; I’m so glad I’m not the only one who does this sometimes 🀣. Orchids, it depends on the flower. No, they don’t need help to flower, but pollinate. You are right, they need a little help if you want vanilla pods. But they only bloom for like a day. It’s actually a bug that pollinates them in the wild. 😜 Same with cacaos; I was so bummed after NOT researching all of this and getting them, ha ha 🀣 πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ but it has been great to grow cacaos and vanilla orchids just to learn how to deal with plants similar; I figure you can’t beat firsthand learning πŸ€£πŸ˜¬πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ
@princesspitstop @DreamMachine Ooooh, this might be the perfect use for some perlite I have. Can you reuse the perlite and the bags??
@debbiedo @princesspitstop totally! And it’s super easy set up too. I pour perlite in, then put warm water in the bag and shake it around to wash off the dust, then you dump the water out and the perlite is all nice and warm and ready for cuttings!
πŸ₯³πŸ₯³ congrats on those roots Heidi.
And I know the feeling. Nowadays I prop mostly with live sphag because I have the boxes taking up space anyway to grow the moss. But in my experience nothing beats perlite. Gorgeous roots, quick, not messy, easily to transfer. A dream. @DreamMachine: tsk. Doesn't your husband know the alternative would be boxes? He should be thankful. The bags are so much more inconspicuous. A baggy with a white substance here, a baggy with some unidentified green leaves there.... all above board.
Love the reminder that plant people and the people around them are beautifully geeky and nerdy. Love the sword, love the eye that immediately focused on the sword, love the discussion.
Love the ziplock omelettes.
@MusicalRedmint πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ and he’s had his fair share of baggies with unidentified green leaves and/or white substances 🀣🀣

And…you grow the moss?! I don’t know why I’ve never thought about this before, what!!
@DreamMachine then what is he complaining about? πŸ˜‚
@DreamMachine I've started doing it because it just made sense. It nowhere near covers the amount I need. But I always preferred live sphag anyway, so i dabble around, which stretches the time until the next order is necessary.
I started because there is simply nothing prettier than to grow CPs in a green vibrant moss setup. And I'm also using it on some orchids even catts. If I water them often enough, the moss greens up. If I don't and it starts dying, it's not worse than sterile dead moss of mediocre quality πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ and as long as it's alive, it protects my plants even better from bacterial and fungal infections. So why not.
@MusicalRedmint He actually hasn’t said anything about them, he’s a good β€˜un 😁 And, to emphasize this point, the other day when he was in the chaotic cluttered with plants office room, you know what he said? β€œWe should get this couch out of here and then I can build you some more shelves for these plants!” πŸ₯ΉπŸ˜πŸ₯° πŸ₯²

did you start with a specific kind of moss? I am just about to start getting some CP. I found a seller of pings on FB marketplace and they’re soooo cute πŸ₯°
I found a great eco friendly good quality supplier.... from the Netherlands πŸ˜€ so maybe not very helpful in your case. I was looking around for live sphag just when I stumbled over sybotanica. They are steadily expanding and now even have treated indoor grown sphag. Nice long strands. But I doubt they ship to the US.
Especially if you want to use it for orchids or hoya later on, you want a species with nice thick and long strands. And if you don't need any right now or in the foreseeable future, technically, you just need a small starter amount. Maybe you could look up cp suppliers or exchanges? I remember having seen people offering up live sphag in cp boards.
Btw: there also always is an infinitesimal chance of sterile dead moss coming to live because the treatment wasn't 100% effective. Had that happen once or twice as well, which originally started me on the path to live moss.
Since you are shopping around for CPs anyway, that might be a way in, since in that community live sphag is used more often. And welcome to the cp club. Pings are the easiest of the bunch and beautifully effective against every plant collector's greatest annoyance. Dratted gnats.

Your husband sure sounds like a treasure. Well done finding him 😊
