I always read that the more you cut zinnias, the more blooms you get, but Iβve always been too chicken to do it! Lol. I faced my fear and cut these lovelies for my kitchen window sill and canβt wait to see what kind of blooms I get next ππ©·π€ #Zinnia flowers">#Cutflowers #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #OutdoorGrowing #OutsidePlants #NewGrowth #GregGang #babevila
ππ» How pretty! I tried zinnias from seed this year, and just as they were sprouting we got hit with the craziest rainstorms ever. Sadly they washed away, but this picture youβve shared right here is exactly why I wanted to give it a go. Kudos to you for facing your fear cutting them! πͺβοΈ Hope you enjoy every minute of them inside! π
Gorgeous! I love zinnias, but have yet to master them! Any and all tips are welcome. I live in Boise Idaho, which I think is Zone 7? When do you plant them? Do you grow from seed? @BabeVila
They look beautiful! Iβm sure the pruning results will be amazing. π
Iβll tell you this story for reassurance sake: Itβs similar for roses too! Thatβs why so many rose bushes start to go wild, people tend to surface prune.
The most beautiful my roses ever looked was when I was in charge of them and I cut all of them *all* the way back. I cut all 24 rose bushes back and only left 3-5 branches per bush, the branches left behind were only 12β tall. Everything was cut back except the branches coming up out of the ground and any branches 1β or greater growing off of those original branches at the base (imagine a bunch of naked and barren V shaped stick bundles, all over the yard)!
I was so scared, I remember thinking, βthis is either going to be amazing, or I just killed all my roses!β I can still remember it 20 years later, those blooms were huge, beautiful, and amazing.

@Hey27 thank you! Mine are from seed, as well! Iβm so sorry to hear about your sprouts, that is one of the worst feelings! I lost several sunflower babies and all of my ranunculus sprouts from crazy rain this year, so I can relate. Zinnias grow pretty fast so you could give it another go! I am actually about to start some more babies that I plan to overwinter under a grow light insideβ¦ I canβt stop lol im addicted to propagating
@GentleCowshorn Hi Andrea! I do grow from seed, zinnias in my experience are one of the easiest flowers to start from seed! They sprout pretty quickly. They love full direct sun, so plant them somewhere super sunny, and give them some protection from strong winds and rain because those can be super damaging especially to babies. Other than that, they are pretty low maintenance! Keep the soil moist at all times from planting until they are several inches tall. When they are about 5-6β tall, cut off the tops, which will encourage branching and more blooms! It really works! Once they are established they donβt need a ton of water, I water them about every other day when we donβt get rain. My favorite thing about them is how you can get flowers that are so unique even from the same stem! Both of the pink ones in the picture are from one stem and one is almost perfectly spherical and I think zinnias are just so pretty and whimsical lol. You will get hooked once you start! π
@GentleCowshorn oh! And I usually start them as soon as the date for frost danger is pastβyou can Google the date in your area. Iβm zone 6a so my date is probably a bit later than yours.
@EZLennyLance Wow! That is amazing and youβve given me the courage to do it with my roses this fall! I have several small bushes that I have never pruned. Only one of them puts out blooms consistentlyβ¦ definitely going to just do it this year! π
@BabeVila Thank you so much!!
