Hi! I’m worried about my ZZ Plant. I got this beautiful black raven ZZ at the beginning of July. It’s grown some but for the most part its kind of just stayed the same. Should I be worried? Is it a slow grower? I do have a grow light that goes off and on every 12 hours. I hoping it’s just a very slow steady growth! #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #NewGrowth #GrowLights #PlantCorner #PlantLove #NewPlantMom
20ft to light, indirect
8” pot with drainage
Last watered 11 months ago
@abbeyjo Abbey they are slow growers. Sounds like the correct lighting. And it likes watering approximately every 10 days to two weeks. It looks fine. You got this!πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ’š
@CourtlyKingfern Hi Evelyn! Thanks so much for your comment. You’ve made me feel tons better. I’ve only been watering about once a month. So I need to be watering it more it sounds like?
@abbeyjo the most experienced plant people I know of say never water on a schedule, always check the soil to see if it needs water. I used the chopstick. I stick it in and if it’s dry, I water if it’s not I don’t. They can be very slow growers and it looks good to me!
@Just1More Hi Cindy, thank you for the advice. That’s what I’ve mostly been doing. I will check the soil before deciding on watering or not. Using a chopstick is a great idea!
@abbeyjo @Just1More sorry Cindy is 100% correct. Always check your soil prior to decision if watering. Where you live, climate and humidity certainly can be different in all homes. My bad. Should have added that.
@CourtlyKingfern oh I don’t think any apology is necessary. I actually do have sort of a schedule for checking my plans for watering. It becomes second nature to us since we’ve been doing these things for so long.πŸ₯°
@CourtlyKingfern @Just1More Thank you both for your advice! It’s always nice chatting with fellow plant lovers 😌
@BuffCaperspurge Hey Tacy! Thanks for the great advice. I’ll definitely stop worrying about her and just let her do her own thing lol. I had no idea ZZ plants have been on earth for over 4,000 years! That’s totally insane!
My raven zz plant did not show new growth for a couple years then I moved her next to a regular old desk lamp and boom! Three new shoots, one after the other. They come out green and then darken. Very cool!
@abbeyjo I use a moisture meter as a guide, some use their finger or chopsticks. My method is working well for me.?
@HappySelah25 I have one of those kicking around somewhere. Those are great too.
@BuffCaperspurge so sweet πŸ₯Ή
@abbeyjo in my experience zz plants need to be absolutely neglected.. i mean, i water mine once every two months or so, just when i feel the stem is getting softer than usual. Otherwise, it can go bone dry and without water for a long time before needing it 😳 and yeah, they are VERY slow growers. They stay the same for ever before putting out new babies, but when they do, they are fast at developing. So, no worries! Your raven zz plant will do its job when she’ll feel like doing it, but she’s perfectly fine :)
I got mine a year ago and it just sprouted a new β€œbranch” this week.
I have 2 Raven ZZ plants that have been doing great. They have been in the same spot since I got them, on a table by the window, indirect light. Today I was checking them out and one had turned dark brown. Leaves and stem are firm. What in the world could have happened??
