I believe this is either an #alocasianinja OR an #alocasiablackvelvet but I'm not sure which? I got him at Walmart and he is very healthy!! So many leaves, it's insane! It's surprising how very sturdy and thick the leaves are. Oh, and any tips on alocasias are appreciated-- I am pretty new to them!
AND I forgot to add is he variegated because of the white one this one leaf?! π€

@TheOddAsity I know when I was trying to ID it I was like it's gotta be one of those two. It definitely looks really velvety!
@TheOddAsity any tips on care? π How much light do they like?
@JesssJungle ok. So the main defining difference is the margins of the ninja are double as wide as the black velvet (the white lines) and its leaves are thicker and more βcorrugatedβ. I attached a pic of mine that is the velvet. So I think yours is a ninja.
As for care, itβs the classic βbright indirectβ light π but they need humidity, so mine hang out around the humidifier. Theyβre prone to root rot. Because they need moist soil, but it can become too wet super fast. I was just reading today someone was talking about how they mixed sand and coco chips and they said it alleviates root rot. I recently repot mine, let me go get the link I used.

It looks like a black velvet to me. I wouldn't get excited about the variegation unless it becomes consistent. From what I've gathered alocasias and colocasias can get splotchy due to improper care or pests and it will look a lot like variegation. I can't speak 100% on that. It's what I was told about my wacky half green leaves on my colocasia.
@TheOddAsity oh good to know about the soil thank you! Definitely am going to do more research before I repot him.. yours is beautiful! I do think mine is a ninja from your description. The leaves are insanely thick, almost reminds me of an insect carapace. Thank you for your advice and ID!! π
@PleaseLeaf good to know, thanks!! I thought it was weird it was one leaf and only a little. I'm gonna keep an eye on it & maybe treat with Neem spray just in case? π I'll do some more research on this.
@JesssJungle so I bought one of these glass hurricanes at Walmart for $5. And instead of LECA I used pumice (if you google pumice as a replacement for LECA it tells you how itβs just fine). Pumice holds 30% of the water that LECA holds so it creates more air pockets which adds to air circulation so it lowers the chances of rot. I dunno, it works for me. So far my Maharani Alocasia is doing great. It has put out 2 more leaves since the repot. (Also, check yours for a root binder. I got mine at Walmart too and it had one).

@TheOddAsity oh thank you!!! πππ
That's interesting about the pumice! So many substrates to choose from..

@AloeThereFronds yours *might* be a black velvet because of the slight difference in leaf shape & the veining is a bit thinner! In any case, it is gorgeous!! π€©π₯°
I see you live in KC, I am about an hour north!! π

@princesspitstop
I have also seen so many plants I did not know existed on this app!!
The leaves are surprisingly rigid, like a beetle's shell. A little soft, like velvet... Interesting combination.

@princesspitstop yeah!! My local Walmarts have TONS of rare plants. All around $20.
I would sway more towards it being a black velvet - I have a ninja and it's leaves all pop out rather than folded down like the others pictured. It's also not as dark as yours - which BTW is stunning.
The only thing that would throw me off it being a black velvet is your description of the leaves. My ninjas leaves are so thick, there's almost no bend to them!
This is an old photo - and I would not recommend getting the leaves wet, like I did. I keep mine in a very chunky mix and it's thriving. I've corms shooting out everywhere and for some reason it tends to grow two leaves at once...π€·π»ββοΈ I'll try to give you an updated photo tomorrow to see if it helps distinguish between the two!
