FEATURE: Lighting needs of CPs
“Lighting is one of the most important aspects of growing carnivorous plants. Many species grow best or even require bright sunlight or strong LED growlights. High light species include flytraps, Sarracenia, most sundews, Heliamphora, and Aldrovanda. Species like Pinguicula, Utricularia, and Genlisea can grow well in moderate to high light levels. Nepenthes pitcher plants usually do best in moderate light levels.
When assessing light, there are 3 factors: Spectrum, Intensity, and Duration (following link below fora breakdown of these 3 factors)…
For many species like flytraps, pygmy sundews, tuberous sundews, Sarracenia, or pretty much anything that isn’t from the equator, changing light hours will induce the proper seasonal cues for these plants. For example, flytraps will go dormant in winter when the photoperiod (hours of light per day) decreases, then flower in spring with lower traps, then send up vertical traps in summer. Pygmy sundews produce gemmae in the fall/winter which is triggered by the photoperiod. Tropical plants like Nepenthes or Heliamphora do not need seasonal changes in light since they come from the tropics”

I have added many posts about the conditions and care of various CPs in previous #cpclubthursday so I recommend people follow the hashtag, may of them also have my own group #seymour so may be easier to find there.
I will add some of the more useful lighting links again in the comments below.
Add any interesting Carnivorous Plant (CP) facts, photos, or anything CP-related for this week.

@Seymour Wow! This is far too much information for my brain 🫨🤯
@JesssJungle super good question Jess and without researching it further, the answer is the temperature is the primary “trigger” and lighting also plays a part but not as significant part.
Basically you are trying to simulate the change in seasons so a drop on temperature is going to see the VFT slow down (hence why some people even put them in the fridge to mimic dormancy)
I think this video explains it well
https://youtu.be/OLhGt-__LhY?si=55JhxXmFKxrnLnop
I’m kinda moving away from light to issues of temperature however I also seek to mimic less light which makes since as when the VFT is slowing down, it’s not producing as much energy from photosynthesis so doesn’t need as much light. So I would recommend a combination of temperature and light (and obviously this will also result in less need for water)
Greg app has some useful information
https://greg.app/venus-fly-trap-temperature/
And you may decide to keep your VFTs outside (provided not significant cold snaps or prolonged snow) or in the garage

This is a good comprehensive guide on VFT dormancy

@UltraKoreanfir I did try to cut the info down but just the I itsl quote is helpful (I hope).
Maybe it was too enlightening 😂 so the brain may enjoy the memes below 👇

@Catplantaddict Yes a Nepenthes pitcher plant, not one of mine but I do have similar size ones (just probably not as colorful or pretty) 🤩
@LiftLashPlant Hi Gigi, that’s a good question as I will answer in respect of VFTs as eg Nepenthes are a little different but I think fundamentally there are some good reasons to have a dormancy. And I will use an analogy. There is no doubt humans can manage without less than the recommended aleep but it has all kinds of adverse consequences (so the science says). Likewise with denying a VFT any dormancy period, it may still grow and look ok but ultimately the lack of any dormancy period will have a cumulative effect. So it may mean it will not grow a flower stalk or may not have a growth spurt come spring so in my view it does have an effect and will ultimately come at a cost to your VFT. So I really recommend some dormancy is encourage so your VFT can rest and shutdown for a while and storage its energy instead of having to keep going without any respite. I think some of the links above confirm this. So my view is a dormancy period is strongly recommended though technically of course you can just “keep the lights on” and just maintain the conditions as if it’s a perpetual summer. But as I said to Jess, light is not as a significant factor for inducing dormancy as a change in temperature (hence why I think he says you can keep the lights on) but I would still reduce the period each day the lights are on (and even one link says he found a way to mimic the reduced light period)
Hope this helps to answer your question but happy to clarify further 😀👍
