FEATURE: Bladderworts
Lots of people have heard of the CPs called butterworts (pings!) but how many people have heard of bladderworts ?
Iโll let Dr Wikipedia provide an introduction:
โUtricularia, commonly and collectively called the bladderworts, is a genus of carnivorous plants consisting of approximately 233 species (precise counts differ based on classification opinions; a 2001 publication lists 215 species). They occur in fresh water and wet soil as terrestrial or aquatic species across every continent except Antarctica. Utricularia are cultivated for their flowers, which are often compared with those of snapdragons and orchids, especially amongst carnivorous plant enthusiastsโ
And if you donโt think they are cool yet, check out this video:

So does any #cpclubthursday member have a bladderwort or planning to get one for their aquarium or as an aquatic feature of their terrarium? Personally I dont have one (yet LOL) but they are on the list along with a fish tank or aquatic terrarium.
Add any interesting Carnivorous Plant (CP) facts, photos, or anything CP-related for this week.
Or ask a question of our members related to CPs
Join the CP just by clicking the link #cpclubthursday and clicking join. That is all it takes! Too easy!
There is already a wealth of CP so why not just join our growing CP community at #cpclubthursday!

2โ pot without drainage
Last watered 1 year ago
@Seymour I plan to add them to the moat around the bog in this picture. The container for the most is buried deep enough in the ground and I have a 3 inch layer of peat at the bottom so that they can survive the winter! Waiting for the moat to fill with rain waterโฆwhich has been a slow process๐
@Amateurbotany Hey Rachael, I need to get something to do as well so I will aim to send an email or email me at my email address in my bio/profile if you donโt get any email from me.
I love your idea and if you were here at the moment (middle of winter) there would be no issue with lack of rain ๐ง๏ธ
โPerth weather: More than 40mm of rain drenches city on Wednesday nightโ thatโs nearly 2 inches

Great idea with the peat, I have sphagnum moss at the bottom of my pots as it helps to draw up the water from the trays to the pot and also blocks the sand etc from falling out of the pots so I use a layer. But it also tends to rot over time so it shouldnโt matter so much if at the bottom of the pot. I have about a dozen pots with sphagnum moss soaking up the rain at the moment. Will need to repot some CPs that are growing madly at the moment
