#TheWateringHole Good Morning, to all around the watering...

#TheWateringHole Good Morning, to all around the watering hole. I hope everyone has had a gentle start into the new Week and your Monday is progressing smoothly! Since there are only 8 plants vying for water and or attention, I am curious about something that I have been wondering about for sometime now. If you are buying a new plant, a plant that is completely foreign to you, and you know nothing about it. What do you do? Do you go down the proverbial rabbit hole, like I do and try to find out as much as you can about the plant? Or do you just post a question on the App here hoping someone has the answers for you? I often find if I do the research it sticks with me and I can remember it down the line! But again that doesn’t always work that way, more times than not I‘ll go back again and again to look up the same info. Some brain fart just keeps blocking something I desperately am trying to remember. Old age or lack of concentration?? Well, that’s enough of that! Enjoy the start of your week and whatever it may have in store for you. Let me know if I missed you or you’d like to be added to the tag list for #TheWateringHole ! 🤍
I look up plants as do you. I try something different from time to time but not extremes
@Ms.Persnickety Good Morning!!
As for me personally, most times when I get a new plant, I thoroughly "disect" the tag, and care for it🍵 according to that info. But if the plant has trouble... I either Google it...😉😁 Or ask a question here on Greg.
I also find that if I research it, or read it several times in a book or something, it sticks in my memory lots better too.😀🤞
I research as much as I can about the plant but when I run into conflicting information and I’m not sure how to proceed then I come to Greg. 🫶🏼

Good morning #TheWateringHole ☀️ The sun is up, birds are singing, it’s supposed to be hot 🥵 beyond all reason today, and I usually go down the rabbit hole of research 🔬 except for some instances.

I love to read 📚 about where the plant is from, plus others experiences with it in their own climates, 🏝️🏔️🌁 which gives me a better idea of how it will do at my house. (But at this point, I also have a pretty good idea of what WILL be happy at my house.)

But occasionally I will be at a garden center, small shop or nursery and just… 🪴 👀 👀 😍 Love at first sight! (99% of the time it’s a hoya, orchid, or calathea)

I try not to add more plants at a time than I can comfortably learn well.

I hope everyone beats the heat today! I’ve got an errand to run as early as possible and then we’re cocooning up in our house with popsicles. Have a great Monday everyone!
@Ms.Persnickety Happy Monday! I usually research several sources when I get a new plant. If I have a rocky go of it, I ask for help here on Greg.
Personally I just wing it.
If I see a new houseplant I don’t have, or have wanted, unless it is impossibly expensive, I usually buy it. Nurseries around here don’t usually offer plants for sale that are not suited to live in this area or indoors around this area. Occasionally if I haven’t seen a plant before, I may look it up first.
@Ms.Persnickety Good Morning 🌞. With Gabriella Plants, I read what and how, they have been caring for it. Then in between time, as it is in transition, I google and I watch YouTube videos pertaining to the plants, I’ve ordered!
Great question. I must say that a plant must appeal to me in some way. The color, the shape or appearance. Sometimes it the sheer challenge. With that being said, I do the research before getting the plant of choice. I never trust the stores to take “great” care and I want to have some idea of overcoming drawbacks to the plant. Changing environments can sometimes take time to acclimate to your new family member.
I definitely look it up, compare what I find with my home environment, and give it a try. If something isn’t working, I love to crowd source here. Often for simple things, you get soooo many different answers that it just confuses things. No one (well except maybe @DreamMachine !) knows my home environment like I do, so what works for someone in a warm tropical place may not work for me.
@MamaLinne yes! you definitely want to get answers from people who know or ask lots of questions about your environment/conditions/care … or @SuperbRaspfern 😅🥰♥️
i always go if i like how the plant make me feel then I research quick if I can manage it or if it needs more care, then i buy. i always make sure first i like how the plant makes me feel before buying.
I research first! If something goes sideways then I come here :)
I do everything! I care for right away, I read tags, and I research information. Then I make a post on the Greg app for any tips for other caretakers of that plant. I wanna hear everyone’s story, what they did wrong. What they did right. I also listen to everything The app Greg says about this plant.
@Ms.Persnickety Hi Monika, I find that I research the plants in advance. If I’m scrolling through Etsy, I’ll go to google to see if the plant i like can survive in my zone. If it can, then I research care. Then I usually buy the plant! Sometimes I’m successful caring for it, sometimes not. When things go wrong is usually when I’ll ask Greg but for the most part, I’ve been stubborn and just let it go to the graveyard. I am notorious for killing begonias. I keep trying and failing but it doesn’t deter me!
Mostly the same here. If I’m in a store and don’t know the plant, I’ll use Google Lens to get some insight, then check toxicity for cats because we have six cats, one of whom can’t keep her mouth to herself except in the case of my ficus triangularis, which are making me crazy right now. 🤪 I have often come here with questions, too.
But can I give a shoutout to my Hoya Krinkle?! It’s outdoing itself!!!!! I’ve only had hoyas about a year now and it is a fairly recent purchase. I think it’s happy where I have it.
@Ms.Persnickety I usually fall in love with a plant, buy it and get it home to realize (1) I don’t have a spot for it or (2) I’m way out of my league- lol. Sometimes both!

I’m trying to scale back to plants that have worked for me for years. But it hasn’t worked yet. I’m still impulse buying pretty plants 😂
Hi @Ms.Persnickety good question! I’m more impulsive 😆. I fall in love and then research as I go. At this point I pretty much know what I’m attracted to and definitely know what I won’t attempt again (yes monsteras, looking 👀 at you). Do these days I’m adding to a species I know I enjoy 😊
@Shells_Garden that’s a great attitude!! 👏 I’m rooting for you and begonias 🥳

For what it’s worth I have found that contrary to all the advice out there, that begonias do actually need to get bone dry before you water them again. (Not dry for days mind you, but I aim to water mine the day their pot dries out 💯) Pic so you can tell I’m not just talking out of my 🍑 😜
@TryAnahaw60 Beautiful hoyas, but I cannot seem to make them happy!
@MariansOasis Sounds like more Hoyas on your horizon??
I’m with most of you; I do a lot of research and I agree with most of you. It gets confusing with all the different types and atmospheres; that’s why it’s so hard to say. Plus, if it’s in pot vs in ground, that’s different styles of growing, and you need to take all that into consideration. But yeah, I do believe it’s about the grower, and the experience you have is different in each of us. I’m so happy we all have a community to join in and share our experiences. 🥰🫶🏻🌸🐝🩵. @DreamMachine Nadia; that picture with gorgeous begonia is so pretty! You look gorgeous ☺️. I’ve definitely learned so much from all of you over time on here; it’s so great to have so many different people with so much experience. Oh; the one I do miss seeing his post I can’t remember his name though.. the Conservationist (I think??) someone who knows names better help me out here.. I probably said it wrong. 😑 🤭🤦‍♀️
@DreamMachine What a gorgeous, unusual, and amazing begonia you have!
@AC73LoveCats aw, thank you Jane! She was my birthday gift last year, I just adore her 🥰
@Idplantthat aw, shucks Rachel, thank you 🤭 I think it’s Sonny you’re thinking of, @TheConservator ! I see him once in a blue moon 🌙 these days, hope he’s doing well 🤗
@TryAnahaw60 WOW, only a year?? 🤯 And it’s flowering already?? Was this a cutting from a mature plant? Those ones often take 18 months to 3 years to bloom. CONGRATS 🎉 🙌
It was a pretty mature plant when I bought it. Our nurseries/garden centers here are quite amazing with their selections. All of the trees and native plants and herbs I have bought for the yard are always amazingly healthy as well as the houseplants. But I am thrilled to experience my first peduncle. Now, what remains to be seen is if I can keep this one and the others healthy and happy to get more blooms. 🥴
@Ms.Persnickety yes I believe you are most likely correct there 😆! My daughter wants to check out the new nursery so I’ve put off buying any Hoyas until we can go together 🤗
@DreamMachine Nadia! Your begonia and you are gorgeous!! You look like a teenager 🥰🤩 And I’m on board with you, let the begonias dry a bit before the next watering. Especially if they’re in a humid climate without much airflow.
@Idplantthat 💯 agree, I’m so grateful to have a great group to join in with and learn from👍🙌🪴
Miss seeing @TheConservator too…. and more of @Jho would be nice 👍
@MariansOasis aw jeeze, thanks Marian 🤗🤭 I turn 40 next month! 🤯

And I’m glad you mentioned air flow too, because this lil lady has very good airflow in her spot. Begonias can be so prone to things like powdery mildew without good airflow!
Oh that’s right, I think we’ve talked about you being my daughter’s age. She just turned 40! And like you, barely looks more than early to mid 20’s 😊
I put my begonias outside this spring. All of them!! It was a rash move but I just wanted to see if it made a difference. They weren’t as robust as they once were. Because SD has great humidity & I’ve got a protected NW patio I figured why not. Plus putting them all outside would reduce waterings, humidifiers, humidity trays, grouping with others… 😮‍💨
Hello! I cant imagine a plant being that foreign to notbbugvit!! 🦋🌿🌻🌵🪴🏜🐞
@MariansOasis 🥰🤗 ooh I’m excited to see how they do! With as much humidity as you have and the increased airflow, I’m betting they will do great 😊
@Idplantthat you know who I’ve been missing these days is @Araceae !! What the heck happened to him? If you see this, I hope you and your plants are doing well and you have plentiful Hoya blooms!!
@DreamMachine I was thinking the same thing the other day! I was like, what happened to him?? @Araceae, if you have time, drop us a line and tell us how you’ve been! Last I remember, he got a Rebecca Hoya, and that was a while ago. ☺️
For me I usually try to find a podcast episode about it and tips for it in social media. I also ask the #Greggers for any tips or help if something’s wrong. But I mostly just wing it! 😅
@DreamMachine very beautiful begonia. Congratulations 🎉 I love the polka dots. I’m regrowing mine. It almost died . Now it’s nice n lush.
@Preciousplants1 oh, wonderful Sherri! A comeback story 🙌 💪 and yours looks beautiful 🤩 I really love how begonias can regrow leaves from older nodes 🤗

And now it’s way past my bedtime 🤭 I hope you have a lovely restful night my dear ❤️🌿
