Good Tuesday afternoon to all at #TheWateringHole 🪴 ☀️!! ...
Good Tuesday afternoon to all at #TheWateringHole 🪴 ☀️!! We had a bright sunny morning ☀️ Clouds ☁️ are now rolling in which makes for a calmer, quieter afternoon along the coast 😌. Went to a horse show last week 😁 🐴 in Burbank. Home now to 💦 and catch up!! Here’s what’s happening: Hoya tricolor wayetii in full flower peduncle mode!! There are 2 flowers out and at least a dozen pedunkadunks 🌸! For the orchid set up I added a second grow light, one on bottom now too. You know, it’s all about the orchids🤪😜😆. Not done arranging and rearranging yet, that’ll take a few days for me to stop fussing 🤫🫠🫥. Next up a new leaf on the Congo Red 😘❤️ love him. And for #untidyTuesday my Blue Star fern that’s been stuck between neutral and reverse for months!! Threw a personal grow light on her to see if that’s what’s ailing her?? Not sure if it’s springtime or the light but there’s growth 🙌 What’s been happening in your world 🌎 🪴 lately. Any plants bursting out now it’s mid April??? #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #NewGrowth #OrchidLovers #HoyaHangout #FernFriends #untidyTuesday

And a very merry #untidyTuesday to you too Marian @MariansOasis Deb @GracedStrapwort and everyone else at #TheWateringHole ! I was actually just thinking I hadn’t heard from you in a little bit Marian and here you are! How was the horse show? Were you in it?? 🐎
Let’s see, around here I have some news with my alocasia silver dragon. It looks like he’s putting out TWO flowers AND a leaf at the same time? Can you say overachiever 😏🫷 😂
After only 8 years 🥴 of owning this wisteria, we finally pruned it right last year, as we’ve never had this many blooms before!! 😲 Can you tell that I wasn’t tall enough to trim the vines towards the top? 😂 …of course I just had to learn that the kind we have is non-native and actually quite invasive here 🫠🫠 So after this season our plan is to hack it to the ground, dig out the root ball, and eventually plant an American wisteria. Easy shmeasy!! (…Only if you don’t look at the size of the “trunk” 😬😬😬)
I finally got a wish list plant I’ve been looking for for a year. Ever since last year when I almost got a geogenanthus poeppigii, walked away, and immediately regretted it. I didn’t even know what it was called, and today I finally found him again. 🙌 Welcome home bud.

@MariansOasis your wayetii tricolor is stunning! That is also a wish list plant and I will circle it because the dark blooms look so lovely next to those leaves! 😱🤩
ooh and check it out! My lions mane mushrooms are ready, I believe. Now if I could only find the info sheet it came with so I know the best way to hack it off! 🤪

@DreamMachine OH My goodness! You got a seersucker pant! I love and want one of my own. Saving up though as they are pricey. I believe their scientific name is Giogenanth us poeppiggi. At least that is what I wrote on my wish list. Congratulations!. It's beautuful!
@GracedStrapwort that’s one gorgeous BOP! And that aeonium 🥰 I love the colors in them! Has your dancing dolphin flowered for you before?
@GracedStrapwort lol I was trying to figure out where the anthurium was? lol 🤣 🤪 😆
@GracedStrapwort yes it is! I’ve had to practice the name so I can remember it 😂 HD has them right now for 20 bucks! They’re in the Mother’s Day lineup of plants. So I got it as a Mother’s Day present to myself! 🥹😁 I knew just what I wanted!!
I’m really excited about your dolphin flower plant. I didn’t realize how FUZZY it was 😱😱😱

@DreamMachine hi Nadia! Yes, I did compete. It was fun, perfect weather plus we did well. All good 👍 The little break from iPad and apps was overdue. No fomo, no dry eyes and lots of fresh air 😌. Here’s a pic of Rowdy in his stall and then one of us waiting for a class.
Wow your Silver Dragon is an overachiever!!! He looks great 😊 That’s so interesting about the wisteria. It was all over Sierra Madre a little town near Pasadena. I doubt it was the native plant. So does it send out roots to replicate itself and that’s why you have to remove it? Or is it just too intense a vine? I would think you could control it by pruning unless it sends out crazy roots. We have Hawaiian Snow bush which we found out is invasive. If you plant it in one spot it will pop up with time in many different locations. Ours so far has stayed contained to a small garden surrounded by concrete sidewalk and driveway. So far so good 👍. Okay, a new plant name to slaughter!! geogenanthus poeppigii!!! 😳 😮 Never heard of it. It’s stunning 🤩 Geogiantsnuffalupagus 🤪

@DreamMachine wowzer!!! That lions mane is incredible!! How do you eat it though?? Cooked? Raw in salads or something ??? It looks like it’s taking over the world 🌎!! Did you ever see the old 50’s movie The Blob, with Steve McQueen? Your Lions Mane is a white fluffy version of the Blob! 😆
@GracedStrapwort lol I’m wondering where did you see Nadia’s seersucker pants? 👖😆 🤪 🤣 Ooooh PLANT
@MariansOasis I got the dancing dolphin as a cutting last fall. It finally got big enough for a 3 inch pot so I was shocked even it got a bloom! I'm hoping my BOP will bloom this year. I've had her for 7 years snd so far, no flowers.
@DreamMachine I was at HD last week. The one near me doesn't have them, or trust me, I'd be getting one. My Aunt always called them seersucker plants because of the crinkly leaves @MariansOasis
@MariansOasis, @DreamMachine I just noticed my spelling mistake 😅 duh 🙄
#TheWateringHole @MariansOasis Good Evening, to everyone! It has been a gorgeous day, here in NM! Birds 🐦 singing, 🌳🌳🌳 blooming and my plants are exploring with new growth! 🙌😉 For the numbers, I can’t count, once again my twins, Ficus Ruby and Ficus Burgundy are neck and neck with sprouting new 🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃! Also my Lucky 🫘Tree Plant, is getting taller and taller, and pretty soon I will have to attach another stick for him. Talking about a 🫘 stalk, I believe he qualifies! 😉 Everyone have a great evening on purpose! 😉
@SweetAzurebluet Harriet, your Ficus are beautiful 😍
@MariansOasis well, now I might be going back on that bold statement..I’m thinking it’s possible we can contain it with enthusiastic pruning twice a year (and catching the runners—they do send out runners). They are known to strangle trees and they are quite heavy so I really must stop it fr climbing up on to the carport, because he’s already taken down his own arbor 😬
The other thing is the seed pods. If I can chop them off and bin them as I see them, or at least before the end of summer we can stop baby ones.
The seed pods are nuts. I never noticed this before, but this year I was outside, this was about a month ago, and I kept hearing ricochets. I thought a really mischievous squirrel or bird was dropping walnuts on us. Turns out as the seed pods dry, they EXPLODE, and launch them up to 15-20 feet away. 🥴🫠🙃
Also if you dig up the root ball and leave ANY pieces, they will grow back. I’m outside with an umbrella now, trying to decide if the vines go counterclockwise (Chinese wisteria) or clockwise (Japanese wisteria). Both are invasive though 🤷♀️
Also LOL, I totally didn’t notice “pant” @GracedStrapwort 😂😂😂

@SweetAzurebluet good evening Harriet! How have you been? Your ficus twins are beautiful, I just love those glossy leaves 🍃🍃🍃 I’m not too familiar with the lucky bean tree but he sure is gorgeous and looks so green and lush. Does he actually produce beans?? 🫘😁
@DreamMachine How have you been feeling and being!? Thanks much, my dear for the compliment, I and my twins appreciate it! 😉 I wish my Lucky 🫘 Tree did produce 🫘! The two stems are held up by green pods. I purchased it from Gabriella Plants, I thought it was so unique!
@GracedStrapwort Thanks much, my dear! 😉
@DreamMachine oh my, that’s a gorgeous plant, you have brought for yourself. I love the name, what type of plant is it!? 😍
@DreamMachine Wow! Gorgeous plants, you have great taste! I, too was 👁️ the Geogenanthus Poeppigii, I am definitely sure I can hardly pronounce the name!
@GracedStrapwort Gorgeous Plant Oasis!! My favorite is your huge BOP, I have two tabletop ones. Congratulations on the new 🍃 growth of your BOP and the Anthurium! 🙌👏🏾
@MariansOasis Gorgeous Plant Oasis, can I call you “Hoya Queen 🫅! What does it take for a Hoya to bloom, are there specific ones?! You are definitely the “Orchid Queen” 🫅 too!
@GracedStrapwort our outside BOP’s bloom when they get lots of sun ☀️ Was she pretty small when you got her?
@GracedStrapwort loved it! 👖 made me giggle 🤭
@SweetAzurebluet good evening Harriet! So glad you had a beautiful day in NM! Your ficus are in a race 🏁🏎️ 🏎️ to the finish line!!! And that Lucky Bean 🫘 looks like a lovely umbrella ☂️ of leaves 🍃 🍃. Have a restful evening 🙌
@DreamMachine that’s so interesting and intense!!! Wisteria is gonna survive one way or another 😲, right?! Runners, yes, that’s what the Hawaiian snow bush does too. But choking out trees, climbing the carport, ricocheting seed pods 😬😳😱🤯 wow!! So I had yo@look up where the invasive wisteria originated and was surprised there is a native one. I’m guessing that’s what you’re going to get?
@SweetAzurebluet aw! thank you much my dear ☺️ I’ve heard people call it Geo for short 🤭 It’s been delightful chaos over here as per usual. But today was a lovely respite, it rained in my favorite way, a misty sprinkle, not enough to use an umbrella. My husband always says it’s like walking through a sprite or 7up soda 🌧️ I hope you have a lovely evening and night! 🌙
@SweetAzurebluet thank you, I will accept both crowns 👑 🫅 and wear them proudly 🤭. Some Hoyas are easier than others. For blooms try the popular Hoyas, they will be the easy keepers and are known for lots of blooms. They don’t need a lot of water, don’t mind a lot of sun and if left to their own devices will blossom! 🥰 My favorites traditional ones are pubicalyx, Krimson Queen or Krimson Princess (both are Hoya carnosa just different variegation).
@MariansOasis American wisteria, Wisteria frutescens, is native to SE US, but the osu extension office does recommend replacing the invasive kind with it as it is less aggressive and less damaging 😆 Here’s the view of ours from the OTHER side 😬😬😬
And please Tell Rowdy he is a handsome boy 🤩😍🥰
And please Tell Rowdy he is a handsome boy 🤩😍🥰
@MariansOasis When I got her seven years ago, she was in a five inch pot and only 8 to 10 inches tall. I did get a tall pot light for her, so hopefully, that will help with blooming.
@MariansOasis Thanks much, my dear! The Hoyas , you have mentioned, I do have. They just never have blossomed.
@DreamMachine I love the description, your husband said too you. Now the Gei does it need a humidifier and what type of soil? You have a great evening too! 😉
@MariansOasis Thanks much, my dear! Between my Ficuses and my BOPs, twins I call all of them, it’s definitely a race! One can not let the other outdo him, am I complaining, NOT! Loving the moments! 😉
@DreamMachine oh wow!! That’s one heavy duty wisteria!!! Ahhh I like the sound of less aggressive and less damaging 🙌✅😊
@SweetAzurebluet how much light do they get Harriet? All day bright light should help. My pubicalyx gets afternoon direct sun for a few hours. The wayetii is right up against a north glass door but when I measure it with a light meter, she’s getting around 400 a 500 footcandles all day. There’s no overhang, she sees the sky all day long.
@DreamMachine your gorgeous beautiful plants !I love them ,so pretty!
@SweetAzurebluet good morning 🌥️🌦️ The geo looks like a lot of my calatheas—dark patterned leaves with maroon leaf backs. This indicates that they are plants that don’t get a lot of sun since they’re usually on the forest floor, and they do like high humidity. I am lucky enough to not need a humidifier in the PNW but if you were to grow this one is NM I’m sure you would need one. I have him right now in a chunky well draining mix of 1/3 coir, 1/3 orchid bark, and 1/3 perlite. We shall see how he likes it! I’m actually wondering if he might need more light, because his stems are quite tall. From what I read, he’s a forest floor creeper, that doesn’t get too vertical. 🤔
@jellyjellz Thank you so much Janel!! ☺️
@MariansOasis omg Marian have you heard of the Hoya micro dwarf? Last week I found an unusual Hoya lady on FB marketplace and I’m obsessed. (Also with the big dinosaur-like finlaysonii) Anyways, no one has been able to get the micro dwarf to flower (a CHALLENGE 💪) so no one’s sure yet if it’s not actually a dischidia (sp?) or a Hoya.
@DreamMachine WOW! Your LM is amazing! Congratulations! Do you grow them often? Great job‼️🪴😁
@Ponytailmom thank you so much! 😊 This is actually my first time growing lions mane, (I think 🤔 ) I’ve grown various types of oysters before! I was a little nervous because they say lions mane can tend to not form fully if they don’t have good humidity, and I don’t know why I was worried about that, I’ve got plenty 😂 🥰🌦️ Do you grow any types of mushrooms? 🍄🟫
Oh, and @MariansOasis you do cook them thoroughly, or at least that is what the instructions say! I made a lions mane and Swiss omelette this morning, with a tiny bit of fresh rosemary from my garden! (Rosemary can be overpowering for me) it was DELICIOUS!

@DreamMachine Back in the day, years and years ago, I used to grow mushrooms 🍄🟫, but not for health reasons 🤣 I was really good at it back then!🥴🤣 not sure how I would do today tho! I think Loins Mane is so beautiful the way it grows is amazing! Congratulations my friend‼️
@DreamMachine ooooh the micro dwarf, that’s so cool! Looks like you took on the challenge!! 💪 Good for you!! Love the whole box of Hoyas 🥹😘🥰 but that finlaysonii is gorgeous!!!
@Ponytailmom ahahaha, that’s awesome!! 👏🤭😂 You are so cool Darah, I LOVE knowing that 🥰😂 I bet you’d kill at it, like riding a bicycle!! 🚲 🍄🟫💗 And thank you! I really love lions 🦁 mane growth pattern too!!
@MariansOasis I might need to send you one if you’re willing (microdwarf)!! If anyone could get it to bloom it’s you 🥰🌺🌸 And isn’t the finlaysonii ‘snow splash’ gorgeous?? 😱😲 once it gets big enough to propagate I would happily send you one too 🥰😘💌
