@Idplantthat , Sabal palms can have spikes, or "boots," which are the remnants of old leaf bases that persist on the trunk, creating a spiky appearance. The presence of these spikes can vary based on the age of the palm and its growth conditions.
Wikipedia
Understanding Spikes on Sabal Palms
Sabal palms, also known as cabbage palms, can exhibit spikes or "boots" on their trunks. These spikes are not true spikes but rather remnants of old leaf bases that persist after the leaves have died. The presence and appearance of these spikes can vary based on several factors.
Factors Influencing Spike Presence
Age of the Palm
Younger sabal palms may not have developed these spikes yet, as they are formed from the bases of older leaves.
As the palm matures, the old leaf bases remain attached, creating a spiky appearance.
Growth Conditions
Environmental factors such as soil quality, moisture, and sunlight can affect how many leaves a palm produces and how long the leaf bases remain attached.
Palms in harsher conditions may retain more leaf bases, leading to a spikier appearance.
Maintenance Practices
Some palms are pruned to remove old leaves, which can reduce the number of spikes.
The decision to prune can depend on aesthetic preferences or health considerations for the palm.
Summary of Spike Characteristics
Characteristic Description
Type of Spike Remnants of old leaf bases (boots)
Age Influence More spikes on older palms
Environmental Impact Growth conditions affect spike retention
Pruning Effects Pruning can reduce or eliminate spikes
The variability in spikes among sabal palms is primarily due to their age, environmental conditions, and maintenance practices.

@Malagueña so quick question for you, and thanks for the advice on the scammer! She hit my post as well. I had to block her. Anyway, do a lot of reptiles or other things nest in those “boots”? I’m in Utah, but down in Southern Utah, we have a lot of palms and things. But we have snakes and scorpions 🦂 that hide out in a lot of palms, so I’ve always been a little terrified of palms for that reason 😂
@Idplantthat , we have snakes, scorpions, and chameleons here. I would say yes like other trees they occasionally nest in there too. Any place they are safe from predators like birds.
