Hoya question for folks in the know. Found this amazing Hoya at a local nursery today with a tag that said DS 70, which upon internet diving, I found rather confusing-ish info on it. It has thick succulent type leaves with a vein running down the center of the leaves and lovely sun-stressed colored leaves. @TryAnahaw60 I just got the same one! I think this is also sometimes called sea stones. And Iβm willing to bet you paid a much better price for that beautiful hanging basket than I did for a Riley little starter plant! πͺ΄ I was visiting my favorite garden center and they didnβt have a lot in the green house for some reason. So I saw this tiny little Hoya that I donβt already have and just decided to bring it home despite being over priced. This little guy was $10. And then I also got these other two cute little plants.

@DreamMachine This nursery has the best of everything. I was picking up some plants for the yard and just wandered into the houseplant area. Blown away! Since it has more succulent type leaves, should it be allowed to dry completely before watering or not allowed to dry completely?

So yes, this is a DS-70, DS for David Silver a collector, and-70 the number assigned to it in his collection, properly known as Hoya sp. aff. burtoniae. οΏΌ Hoya sp. aff." stands for Hoya species affinis (Latin for "closely related to" or "akin to"), indicating a plant is very similar to, or resembles, a known species but is technically a different, often undescribed, species. So your DS-70 is closely related to burtoniae. π itβs a beauty!

They do have succulent leaves, however, I find mostly, they appreciate being watered when 90-95% dry. Not every hoya does though. The website and you tube channel Vermont Hoyas is great and if I recall correctly he has a chart for which hoyas like being on the dry side and which ones donβt.
Along with that website, @MusicalRedmint Susann also recommended Basie Plants to me, and I have loved both!

@MariansOasis Oh! Thank you for explaining all that. I was trying to figure out the whole letter and number system thing. That makes complete sense to me now.
@DreamMachine Lol! Nah. I had two rope ones that did eventually succumb to mealy bugs. What really got me started was βthe estate sale Hoya.β After it seemed to recover and begin to do better, I just kept adding. Iβm up to 10 now in less than a year. π

@DreamMachine Interesting read but argh π© it makes it so difficult these days to know what youβre really getting when Hoyas are all over social media, internet, backyard growersβ¦. I pretty much go with the mantra βbuyer bewareβ and donβt spend a lot of money. If I like it and itβs a reasonable price Iβll just buy it and enjoy π On line retailers with good reputations Iβll go with too. But even then Iβve had the wrong plant sent from one Hoya specialty shop π΅βπ«π€ͺ

@MariansOasis You and @DreamMachine gonna get me in sorts of trouble mentioning stores to buy from now on I have just stuck to my local, very well run nursery and their Hoyas are quite healthy and they do a lot of work to make sure theyβre labeled correctly, as with all their plants.
@TryAnahaw60 youβre very lucky to have well stocked stores nearby π. Youβd think in So CA Iβd have lots of choices and good inventory but we donβt. If it isnβt a big seller then the owners donβt stock it any longer. They did during & for a while after Covid. But the last year itβs definitely changed. Rent is so high here in San Diego every square foot has to be scrutinized. So itβs been more on line for me than I like which makes me π because I want to support local. Fortunately my other favorite besides Hoya is orchid and there are plenty of orchid growers within 5-20 minutes from my house!!! Yay! π

@DreamMachine right?! π My most recent treasure trove of Hoyas was the FB Marketplace lady out of her backyard! Which I found her ONLY because you had success with FB marketplace and I thought Iβd ck out whatβs around me! π€ͺππ
@MariansOasis That truly surprises me. Weβre in the midlands of SC and this nursery is fairly new, only been in business for a couple of years but their inventory is fantastic. I buy all my herbs from them and have been βrewildingβ a lot of our backyard with their plants. Iβve gotten most of my Hoyas from them, as well as my rose calathea, Ginny pepperomia, pilea, etc. Everything has been so healthy and is thriving. I think their buyer for the houseplant section must be a Hoya lover.
@MariansOasis Oooooo orchids! My other new fave. Hubby gave me an orchid for our 30 anniversary and it just thrived. I now have four orchids. π
Hi everybody. @DreamMachine nails on a chalkboard indeed. First hoya I bought was a no ID and plunged me into the krohniana lacunosa problem right off the bat. Truly not healthy.
Anyway, just came here following the friendly tag, saw the topic, sharpened my fingers for a manic pet peeve topic type frenzy.... only to see that everything i could contribute basically had already been said by @MariansOasis and Nadia. π but because i cannot help myself (and cannot contribute anything to the seller discussion):
yes, as far as I know: most DS 70s today are probably sp.aff. burtoniaes. As are most true "burtoniae"s for that matter. I myself am on the fence regarding the burtoniae though. While e.g. Miro from Basie plants insists that the back of the leaves of a true burtoniae under sun stress completely turn a deep violet through and through and the penduncles are spread out more elegantly, I've also heard people like my (just as well- informed) hoya lady claim that these kinds of variation also can happen with different culture, so basically there might not even be a true burtoniae/sp.ff. burtoniae difference. At least in regards to the burtoniae, I've arrived at the decision not to care any longer (apart from the fact they are not DS 70s). They are gorgeous and velvety, so I've made my peace and avoid the nails on a chalkboard for at least one contentious plant.
That being said, I enjoyed all your beautiful burtoniae pics. Have a great evening, you all.

@MusicalRedmint a hahaha βsharpened your fingersβ π From what I can find it seems like the βtrueβ burtoniae does not have velvety leaves, and instead are firm but smooth. However, what I have also found is that they BOTH have velvety leaves. π€ͺπ€¨ Iβm trying to find the difference in flowers, but who knows if they know which variety they actually have!
Anyhoo, it doesnβt really matter much to me either, as I can still just pet the lovely velvety leaves and be happy π

@TryAnahaw60 @MariansOasis yes!! Love orchids too π Also what is this nurseryβs name? I wonder if they ship. As someone in Oregon Iβve been trying to find good nurseries that ship to me that are closer than Florida π₯΄
@MusicalRedmint Thank you for your input. Iβm new to Hoyas, found a new passion, aka addiction in them. I spent the morning watching Vermont Hoyas and Miroβs YouTube channels learning as much as I can not just about the new Hoya but all Hoyas.

@TryAnahaw60 whoops on that earlier comment! Re Vermont Hoyas and Miro: that is exactly what Iβve been doing π There are just SO many hoyas and as a whole, I think they are badasses. They just stop growing if you underwater them, they donβt throw fits or act dramatically. I picture them folding their proverbial arms and saying, βno water huh? Thatβs ok. Iβll WAIT.β

@DreamMachine He cracked me up! And I think the estate sale Hoya is pretty much so happy to only be getting a bit of water after being practically water boarded for who knows how long! π€ͺπ€

@DreamMachine Thatβs the one! Swimming in about an inch of nasty water. I think we decided a carnosa? I can send pics of it now with itβs new leaves and maybe it will better show what is truly is.
@DreamMachine Quite a bit better. Even the yellowed and yellowing leaves are turning darker and healthier again. Just love the little splash spots
