Good Thursday to everyone. It’s another hot one here in West Central Florida. Hopefully we’ll get some rain this afternoon. I found two more monarch caterpillars on my milkweed plants this morning. That makes three at all. Normally, I would be upset if caterpillars were eating my plants, but this is why I am growing them. That’s so awesome. They eat for 14 days, then leave the plant to find a safe hidden spot to start the next process. I loved watching mine build their Chrysalis once they are hanging- Monarchs shed their skin and it takes about 5 minutes- They almost look like they’re having a seizure! I hope you get to see all of it- it’s just so amazing! 😊
@SillyPlantGirl , thank you Catherine once again your information is invaluable. I actually have two grow tables just a few feet from the plants. Hopefully they will go under there. It would be safe for them. I have a lot of birds around here. I have a large birdfeeder and a birdbath so they’re quite a lot of birds in this area.
Birds usually won’t go near them- the yellow/black/white stripes are actually toxins. There’s a few things that are immune to the toxin are wasps, spiders, stink bugs and ants. Racoons and Squirrels will snatch a Chrysalis tho (stinkers). Did you know these guys will crawl 30 feet to find a safe spot?
That is way too be an outdoor person of nature, the environment, and the ecosystem. I have just a crazy idea for you, if you can do find a special spot in your yard and design a garden space of specialness and get plants that would be a great benefit bonus for yourself among beneficial to nature, the environment and the ecosystem and the wildlife that would be a great enjoyment to observe, watch, photograph, and to learn about. Last addition idea consider possibly a couple beehives for the garden plus idea
@GoodLecanora84 , hi Kiersten. That’s exactly what I am doing. 👍🪴I’m putting in birdfeeders a birdbath. Great bushes for the pollinators like the Chaste tree. Now I am putting in a whole garden of just milkweeds. It has not been in very long and the monarchs have already found it. Beehive or something I have also considered. However, in Florida, you have to have a permit and submit to state inspections since honey is a food source.
