Identified our M. spinosissima subspecies!
I have a very exciting moment to share. I have finally IDed our favorite #SucculentSquad and #CactusClique member of the #RJGroup Richard Johnson.
I always figured he was a type of Mammillaria spinosissima but couldn't figure out the subspecies. Well today as I was doing g some #gregteam work I stumbled across M. spinosissima subsp. pilcayensis!!
What do y'all think #GregGang ?? #UnknownSuccs no more. #Cactus #Cacti #Succulent #Succulents

@SirLiquorice do you agree w my analysis π
Haha....See.. @RJG Cacti...succs!!!! You are doing it too....π€£π€£π€£π€£π€£ This is awesome.....π
@RJG that looks very close. What color flowers does it get? That type says pink to magenta flowers.
@SirLiquorice to Richards Gallery!
@KeyCliantro I wouldn't πππ
@RJG yeah I think youβre right. Or definitely so close. Like you said before thereβs so many mam hybrids that itβs very difficult to ID. But thatβs looking pretty correct as far as ID
@PlantMompy right? All I wanna do is pet Richard Johnson.
@PlantMompy No this is different. Think bed of nails. I can handle it bare hand as long as it has enough surface area.
@PlantMompy never mess with opuntia thorns. mammillaria aren't too bad unless it's a hook variety

@RJG I messaged Dr. Gary Duke to see if he agreed with all of us and he also confirmed that looks like the correct ID!!! I thought we were correct. That definitely confirms it even more. He is president of the south coast cactus society and also president of the Long Beach cactus society and has more than 1,000 cacti in his personal collection, so I knew he would be the best person I know to also ask just to confirm.
Thanks for reaching out. I may need you to connect me with him eventually π«£π @SirLiquorice (forgot the tag yesterday)
Awwβ¦Iβm so glad you found out what species of cactus your adopted βsonβ is!! Yayy for Richard Johnson!! @RJG
@RJG OMG π³ what an amazing Mamillaria. Stunning.
@RJG WHERE IS FUZZY RICHARD
@RJG Heβs FABULOUS π
@SirLiquorice look at the update pictures π
