Identified our M. spinosissima subspecies!

I have a very exciting moment to share. I have finally IDed our favorite #SucculentSquad and #CactusClique member of the #RJGroup Richard Johnson.

I always figured he was a type of Mammillaria spinosissima but couldn't figure out the subspecies. Well today as I was doing g some #gregteam work I stumbled across M. spinosissima subsp. pilcayensis!!

What do y'all think #GregGang ?? #UnknownSuccs no more. #Cactus #Cacti #Succulent #Succulents

@SirLiquorice do you agree w my analysis πŸ‘€
Richard Johnson is definitely in the too cool for school gang!!! πŸ₯°πŸ₯°
You have a fantastic cactus. Super cool. 🌡
Haha....See.. @RJG Cacti...succs!!!! You are doing it too....🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣 This is awesome.....😍
@RJG that looks very close. What color flowers does it get? That type says pink to magenta flowers.
Can I..... Can I cuddle with the cactus...? It looks so soft πŸ₯ΊπŸ€£
πŸ₯Ίhe looks so fluffy
The longer ones kind of remind me of fox tails
@SirLiquorice to Richards Gallery!
@KeyCliantro I wouldn't πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ‘€
@SirLiquorice I think we have a match
@RJG yeah I think you’re right. Or definitely so close. Like you said before there’s so many mam hybrids that it’s very difficult to ID. But that’s looking pretty correct as far as ID
Omg @RJG staaaaahp. Get outta here with that name. β˜ οΈπŸ˜‚
The fact that I can't snuggle with it is frustrating.
@PlantMompy right? All I wanna do is pet Richard Johnson.
@kaleena @PlantMompy you can pet just gently!
Yeah, just like you can "pet" bunny ears cacti πŸ€¨πŸ˜‚
@PlantMompy No this is different. Think bed of nails. I can handle it bare hand as long as it has enough surface area.
@PlantMompy never mess with opuntia thorns. mammillaria aren't too bad unless it's a hook variety
πŸ˜©πŸ’šπŸ’š love it!
DREW IVE RESEARCHED THIS CACTUS BEFORE. YEA RICHARD JOHNSON IS A PILCAYENSIS

IVE NEVER SEEN ONE IRL BEFORE CAN I SEE IT
@kscape I mean it's raining rn (!!!!!) but sure once it stops.
@RJG 😭😭🀍🀍🀍
@RJG I messaged Dr. Gary Duke to see if he agreed with all of us and he also confirmed that looks like the correct ID!!! I thought we were correct. That definitely confirms it even more. He is president of the south coast cactus society and also president of the Long Beach cactus society and has more than 1,000 cacti in his personal collection, so I knew he would be the best person I know to also ask just to confirm.
Thanks for reaching out. I may need you to connect me with him eventually πŸ«£πŸ‘€ @SirLiquorice (forgot the tag yesterday)
Aww…I’m so glad you found out what species of cactus your adopted β€œson” is!! Yayy for Richard Johnson!! @RJG
@RJG OMG 😳 what an amazing Mamillaria. Stunning.
@RJG here’s what Leafsnap said. You are gonna habe a monster on your hands. Wow!
@RJG WHERE IS FUZZY RICHARD
Omg @kscape
@RJG He’s FABULOUS 😍
@SirLiquorice look at the update pictures πŸ‘€
