Blooming philodendron plowmanii and beetles

Day 2 of the blooming #plowmanii the spadix is active. Thermogenesis has begun! The spadix is definitely warm to the touch (slightly warmer than room temperature)

Last night when the bloom opened it was putting out a sweet floral aroma. Today it’s very unpleasant, like a rotting fruit. It’s around this time in nature where beetles would be attracted to the scent and to the heat.

Beetles visit the blooming flower on day 2 and crawl inside and spend the night feeding on the resin and feces from the bugs attracted during day 1 sweet scent phase. Hopefully, bringing pollen from a neighbor philodendron from the previous evening to the receptive female part of the spadix.

As the bloom cools and the female receptors go dormant then the bloom tightens it’s exit quickly (about 60 minutes later) forcing the beetles to take pollen with them from the now active pollen flowers on the spadix.

If all goes as planned tonight or tomorrow morning I will be able to harvest and freeze the pollen for up to 1 year. #HappyPlants #pollinators #Philodendron #PlantAddict #GregGang #learningsomethingneweveryday

One hour later…
OH MY WORD!! I've never HEARD of this plant before!!
@jcPlantProper do y'all have this one?!
@AwesomePlants do you have this plant?!
@sarahsalith 🀭 One of the ones on the way! πŸ€ͺ
Such an amazing process, having both male and female parts housed together in one overall unit, if you will.

Hopefully you'll have little #plowmanii babies in the future!
Two hours later…
11:23PM EST: The flower is beginning to close! Within the next hour it should start producing pollen. This is normally when the beetles would evacuate and get brushed with pollen since the only way out just got a lot smaller!
@ForFoxSake so amazing!!!🀯🀯
1:04AM EST: The odor is very unpleasant right now 🀒 yesterday was honeysuckle paradise. Tonight it smells like bad banana with a hint of sulfur.

Hopefully I will be able to harvest the pollen before I leave for my flight tomorrow in 9 hours 🀞

Knowing my luck though I will have spent months making this bloom possible only to miss the harvest window by 30 minutes πŸ˜‚
2:41AM EST: Maybe in the morning 😴
So fun to follow along! Next best thing to Peaky Blinders season 6 to watch. πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜‚πŸ€ͺπŸͺ΄
