Happy #FreshLeafFriday everyone ๐ŸŒฟ
Today I went my favorite locally owned nursery, I went because Iโ€™m already having *cringe* fungus KNATS ๐Ÿ˜ซ โ€ฆ
I havenโ€™t even moved my plants inside yet is the worst part. Itโ€™s just my props that are inside on my plant shelf right now.
Anyways I went looking for some sticky traps that you can put in your pots. My grandma gave me one a few months back & it seems to have caught a lot of knats, etc. I have been trying to find more so I could put them in my other pots indoors, but couldnโ€™t seem to find them at Home Depot or Walmart. It came with 24 but they were $13.99! ๐Ÿ˜ณ Iโ€™m almost ashamed to say that I spent that much on them, however Iโ€™m used to the this nursery being a bit pricy (most locally owned places tend to be a bit more expensive then big box stores). Since I couldnโ€™t find them anywhere else & it was an emergency Iโ€™m not too upset about the price. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

I didnโ€™t end up coming home with any new plants today, *pats self on back* (it was only because they donโ€™t carry many succulents during this time of year). But I did get a planter & some premade gritty cactus mixโ€ฆ the soil was also RIDICULOUSLY expensive for the amount I got.. (21.99 for 2.2 lbs) it is very gritty & looks like a good quality mix. Since Iโ€™ve recently been more interested in cacti than usual, I decided to get this instead of the premade gritty succulent mix they had. Although I know the basic care for cacti, I still have trouble with them sometimes, they will be fine & then they will just die on me or just not grow, idk if they go dormant or what. There are so many little things about every type of cactus they are very specific as far as care goes etc.
anyways my point is hoping this soil mix will keep them happy & prevent rot or overwatering.
I used the new soil mix in my new pot with one of my new cactuses I got the other day, I also put a sedeveria โ€˜Spring Jadeโ€™ & a little piece of sedum in the middle.

I also moved my palm in itโ€™s permanent spot as of right now, on my screened in porch, I donโ€™t know much about these, Iโ€™m not even really sure what type of palm it is.. any tips are appreciated

Sorry for the super long post ๐Ÿซฃ

Fungus gnats are the worst, but the sticky traps are a lifesaver. I would recommend you let the soil dry out as you collect the gnats so more donโ€™t hatch and hopefully the eggs die ๐Ÿคข and donโ€™t replace the sticky traps until theyโ€™re full. Rewater when the coast is clear! Good luck!
@Charli3Plant I noticed the LECA in the mix.. I was wondering about that. Glad you mentioned it. I donโ€™t know to much about LECA but from what I understand itโ€™s not really for succulents and cacti. Itโ€™s called the Durham garden center itโ€™s on hwy 70 by foodlion.
@TidyTigerpear Sorry about those gnats! Iโ€™ve slowed them down, but havenโ€™t managed to totally get rid of them. I order my sticky traps from Amazon. The first time I ordered, I thought I would never use that many! Well, I did! I think I need to repot a couple of mine that seem to collect the most gnats on the sticky traps. Youโ€™ll have to give us an update on the soil.
Your 1st pic is so pretty! Love the contrast of colors and shapes. Iโ€™ve used the SOL soil and liked it a lot! It may cost a bit more but the plants Iโ€™ve used it for are doing really well. Like Joy @RefinedSandwort I get sticky traps on AMZ. Although Iโ€™d prefer to support local, not a lot of our local nurseries have them.
@MariansOasis yes I do like to support local businesses so I donโ€™t mind! I was honestly kinda surprised they had them . And good to know about the soil! It seemed like good quality at first look I used some of it yesterday so we will see how it does
Yes definitely amazon for the sticky traps!Especially when you can get alot for less $&they get delivered quickly.
Does ur soil/mix always seem moist on top? Maybe try to bottom water the ones u worry about w/the gnats since they wonโ€™t come around if its dry
@BuffCaperspurge it doesnโ€™t seem like itโ€™ always stays moist at the top or stays moist too long, however I do water them more frequently then I do my other succulents because they are props & they are still in that stage of needing a little more extra care and moisture since I have them under my grow lights for most of the day. I also keep a fan on and point it in the direction of the shelf that holds my props, for good air circulation. I actually saw a video today that said to bottom water to help prevent them laying eggs etc. I also got some sticky traps and plan to start watering with hydrogen peroxide mixed in my water next time I water them.

Hi!
If you're misting your plants, please stop!
It doesn't help...only a humidifier will put moisture in the air.
Fungus gnats LOVE plants ๐Ÿชด that are misted because the topsoil is constantly moist...that's their breeding ground!
