About Elephant ear
Alocasias, commonly known as Elephant Ears, are some of the most common houseplants although their leaves can reach enormous sizes when grown outdoors! 🐘 They typically only support a few leaves at a time (more, when they get more sun!) so don't be concerned if you see an old leaf begin to retire after a new one emerges. They grow out of underground corms which are similar to bulbs, so next time you repot keep an eye out for baby Alocasias! They contain calcium oxalate crystals so be sure to keep them out of reach if you have children or pets! ⚠️

Finding light for Elephant ear in your home

a window
Elephant ear may have difficulty thriving, and will drop leaves 🍃, without ample sunlight.
Place it less than 3 feet from a south-facing window to maximize the potential for growth.
Select your region to see how the current weather in your area affects the placement of Elephant ear in your home 🏡.
How to fertilize Elephant ear

Most potting soils come with ample nutrients which plants use to produce new growth.
By the time your plant has depleted the nutrients in its soil it’s likely grown enough to need a larger pot anyway.
To replenish this plant's nutrients, repot your Elephant ear after it doubles in size or once a year—whichever comes first.

What are these? The Internet says corms, but they're not under the soil and coming directly from the original stem. They look interesting!

Update on Miss Merlot, the Alocasia Red Secret! ♥️ She is under a grow light in my bedroom and has been giving me nice big, deep red leaves. These photos DO NOT do her justice. The way the light plays off her iridescence is awe inspiring. Two new leaf shoots are popping up also! #alocasiaaddicts #alocasia #alocasiaredsecret #alocasiacuprearedsecret #happyplants #jesssjungle #plantaddict #plantsmakepeoplehappy #planttherapy

I'm taking over the care of this girl from my mother. Would succulent and cactus mix be ok to use? Do you think she needs a bigger pot? Thank you #BlackVelvetAlocasia

Have I broken her?! Hey! I thought the issue may be sunburn but now I'm unsure. I got this on the 8th May, with wet soil. Then bottom watered her 25th May. Soil still feels wet an inch down from the top. She's in a chunky soil mix with orchid bark in. Could she just be dropping her lowest leaf? She's in the UK, was originally in an East facing window (no direct light but its been much warmer than normal recently, so the sun has felt stronger) I moved her when I noticed the tip of her was damaged, she's now in a South facing window but further away from the window. Any tips! The other leaf unfurled and the other leaves are still looking green! Thanks in advance!

This drama mama plant will be the end of meeee I got this Alocasia from Plant Con Houston a maybe two weeks ago. I know they can be finicky so I gave it a good week of adjustment before fiddling with her. Ahe began losing leaves almost immediately upon entering my home. She was extremely root bound so a week or so ago i repotted her and gave her a nice mix soil of indoor soil mix, orchid bark, perlite and some peat moss. Anyways…everyday i pass by her and she just is getting discolored leaves. To the point that the baby leaves she came here with have already just fallen off basically. She is right next to my humidifier which runs almost all day. My hygrometer reads over 60% humidity all day. The resting humidity without a humidifier is right at 60%. The leaves feel soft and not crunchy

Are these rare? I was doing some research and apparently the variegated alocasia frydek is considered rare?? I just randomly found mine at target, I will say it was $30, whereas the plants at target are usually $15. Regardless I am in love! The variegation is so beautiful! #VariegatedAlocasiaFrydek

I got what I think is either a silver dragon or dragon scale alocasia and I believe it’s VERIGATED I’m so excited!! I had to repot her a few hours after I got her cause I noticed bug eggs EVERYWHERE in the soil and I’m glad I did because the pot was too large and some roots were rotting so fingers crossed all goes well *found at walmart*
