How to Fertilize Desert Rose Plant
When Should I Start Feeding My Desert Rose?
Desert Rose breaks dormancy when temperatures stay consistently warm, so your feeding start date depends heavily on your region's spring warmup.
How Often Should I Fertilize My Desert Rose?
During the active growing season, feed your Desert Rose every 2-4 weeks with a half-strength liquid fertilizer. If the plant is blooming heavily, lean toward every two weeks.
Begin tapering off in early fall as temperatures cool and growth slows. Stop entirely once nighttime temperatures drop below 55 F (13 C) or the plant starts dropping leaves.
Over-fertilizing Desert Rose causes leggy, weak growth with fewer flowers. If you notice lots of leaves but no blooms, your fertilizer may be too high in nitrogen.
What Is the Best Fertilizer for Desert Rose?
Desert Rose is a flowering succulent, so it needs more phosphorus than a typical foliage plant. Look for a fertilizer with a higher middle number in the NPK ratio, such as 5-10-5 or 10-30-20. The extra phosphorus supports the heavy bloom production this plant is known for.
A water-soluble liquid fertilizer is the easiest to control. Dilute it to half the label strength to protect the thick caudex and fleshy roots from salt damage.
Slow-release granules also work well if you prefer less frequent applications. Sprinkle them on the soil surface in early spring and again in midsummer.
