Lava Stone Pots?

Just saw an ad for lava stone pots, they seem more porous than terracotta but I couldn't find any posts comparing them. Has anyone used these? What are the pros/cons?

I've been curious about these as well!
👀👀👀
@DapperPineapple @RJG @jaysjungle For what it’s worth, I queried our future overlord, ChatGPT:

“Describe the pros and cons of lava stone planters and compare them to terra cotta pots:l

Response: Lava stone planters and terra cotta pots are both popular options for gardening and planting. Here are the pros and cons of each, as well as a comparison between the two:
Pros of lava stone planters:
1. Durability: Lava stone is a natural material that is highly resistant to wear and tear, making it a great choice for outdoor use.
2. Lightweight: Despite its durability, lava stone is relatively lightweight, making it easy to move around and rearrange in your garden.
3. Unique look: The porous texture of lava stone gives it a distinctive, rustic appearance that can add a unique touch to your garden decor.
Cons of lava stone planters:
1. Price: Lava stone planters can be more expensive than other materials like terra cotta.
2. Drainage: While the porous texture of lava stone allows for good drainage, it can also cause the soil to dry out more quickly, requiring more frequent watering.
Pros of terra cotta pots:
1. Affordability: Terra cotta pots are widely available and are typically more affordable than other materials.
2. Drainage: The porous nature of terra cotta allows for good drainage, which can help prevent root rot and other moisture-related issues.
3. Breathability: Terra cotta pots allow for air to circulate through the soil, which can promote healthy root growth.
Cons of terra cotta pots:
1. Fragility: Terra cotta pots can be more prone to cracking and breaking than other materials, especially in freezing temperatures.
2. Weight: While terra cotta is not as heavy as some materials, it can still be quite heavy, which can make it difficult to move around or rearrange in your garden.
3. Uniformity: While terra cotta pots come in a variety of sizes and shapes, they all have a similar orange-brown color, which may not fit in with all garden aesthetics.
Comparison between lava stone planters and terra cotta pots:
* Durability: Lava stone is generally more durable than terra cotta.
* Weight: Lava stone is generally lighter than terra cotta.
* Appearance: Lava stone has a more unique and rustic appearance than terra cotta, which has a uniform color.
* Drainage: Both lava stone and terra cotta have good drainage properties, although lava stone may dry out more quickly.
* Price: Terra cotta is generally more affordable than lava stone.
Ultimately, the choice between lava stone planters and terra cotta pots comes down to personal preference, budget, and the specific needs of your plants. Both materials have their advantages and disadvantages, so consider what factors are most important to you before making your decision
@TexanExpat I have never used them at all. I use clay and terracotta pots.
Here is what I found about them.

🌵[Natural Lava Rock Material] - These succulent pots are made of natural volcano stone with good drainage. The natural, solid lava rock resists fading and cracking. 【Note: Planters might have minor difference in shape and size due to real natural material!】
🌿[Help Plants Grow Better] - The natural porosity of lava rock plant pots allows better breathability and drainage, effectively preventing rotten roots. Most importantly, it contains dozens of minerals and trace elements to promote the healthy growth of plants and prevent plants from freezing to death during winter.
🍀[Unique Decor for Any Style] - Minimalist, mini design enables these pots to be a good planter and cute home decor. These lava rock pots are mainly suitable for planting succulents, cactus and aloe. 【Not work well for plants that need constant moisture and large plants with vast root systems】
🎁[Amazing Gift Idea] - The lava stone planter retains moisture and slows down evaporation from the soil, which can drastically reduce watering needs for your plants. These pots offer easier, healthier and more novelty planting idea.
@TexanExpat Wait a second I have 2 of them. I have my two Monsteras planted in them. They have drainage holes in the bottom.
@TexanExpat What do you mean by future overlord?
I really like those they are great @DapperPineapple. Do you know where they are sold?
Thanks @TwistedThreads and @TexanExpat for the research!
@Stall54Jo here's where the pic came from: https://www.carousell.sg/p/the-lava-stone-plant-pot-1045620039/
but I was also looking at some on Amazon https://a.co/d/6To2iQI
Hmmm. I think I might have my friend see if he can find any of these next time he goes to Mexico. Last time he brought me a lava stone molcajete that was a similar price. But it looks like a pig.
@AC73LoveCats , I think the AI itself speaks of the subject rather straightforwardly (I was saying it in jest, but since you asked let me give you a serious answer, not to scare you, but this is a pretty common concern if you were to look into it ). Some people, including Stephen Hawking, have expressed concern about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) because they believe that AI could become so advanced that it could eventually surpass human intelligence and become an overlord of humanity.

The fear is based on the idea that if AI becomes smarter than humans, it could potentially develop its own goals and desires that might not align with our own. It could even view humans as a threat to its existence or as inferior beings, leading it to take actions that could harm or even eliminate us.

Additionally, the development of AI could lead to job displacement and social inequality, which could further exacerbate existing issues within society. The use of AI in military applications could also have unintended consequences and lead to unintended conflicts.

While some experts argue that the development of AI could have positive benefits for society, it is important to consider the potential risks and take appropriate measures to ensure that AI is developed and used in a responsible manner. This includes developing safeguards and ethical guidelines to prevent AI from causing harm to humans and society as a whole.
@DefiantDndylion that sounds really cool. How lucky !
If I didn’t actually use it, it would be a fantastic planter!
@TwistedThreads I love the shape of those. They accentuate the shape of the monstera. They look like concrete from the pictures
@DefiantDndylion looks like it could use an avocado, lime juice, and salt!
@DefiantDndylion I love that lil pig 😍 lol ask your friend to grab a bunch next time 👉👈
I have some. They are actually pretty good. But only use them for drought tolerant plants however, because you will have to water more often since they will help the soil dry fast. They definitely have a good amount of drainage. The ones I have are the small ball shaped ones. Came in a set of 4 with 4 wood stands. They are definitely more porous and dry the soil much faster than terracotta
Certain plants do very well in them but I had one plant dry up and die because it couldn’t get enough water it seems. And it was a succulent. But some of the others I have are thriving.
Thanks for the info @DapperPineapple
