How to get it to live up to its name?
Thrilled to add this wishlist plant to my oasis! "Ruby Necklace" aka Othonna Capensis. What tips do you have to acclimate it to full sun so it becomes that gorgeous ruby colour?

2ft to light, indirect
3â pot with drainage
Last watered 9 months ago
It's somewhat sensitive to water, so I'd agree with @Alavone to the bottom water. I didn't noticed much of the bright indirect light.
I had this plant for 6 years now; learned a hard way about water as the plant nearly gave up on me. In the later spring/summer/early fall it's spends outdoors (pot has string of bananas, ruby necklace as as well as string of pearls) in mostly shady spot.

@Hoyaobsessed @Lifeis2short @Floristsdaisy thanks so much! Bottom watering is the main way I water so no worries there. I have it under a grow light for now since I noticed at the store I got it from that it wasn't getting any direct light, so I'll need to ease it into sunlight. Hoping for the best and some pretty ruby leaves in the weeks/months to come. Can't wait - but gonna have to ð
@Floristsdaisy bonsai feels like another level entirely but I'd love to get good enough with houseplants to try one sometime ðĪ
@ballondusoleil To acclimate an Othonna capensis (Ruby Necklace) to full sun and regain its ruby color, gradually increase the plant's exposure to sunlight over time, starting with morning sun and eventually introducing it to afternoon sun. Provide shade or filtered light during the hottest parts of the day to prevent leaf scorch. Here's a more detailed approach:
1. Start with Morning Sun:
Begin by placing the plant in a location that receives morning sunlight, as this light is generally cooler and less intense than afternoon sun.
2. Gradual Increase:
Over a period of a few weeks, gradually increase the amount of direct sunlight the plant receives, moving it closer to the source of light each day.
3. Consider Shade:
During the hottest parts of the day (especially during the summer months), provide the plant with some shade or filtered light to prevent leaf scorch. This can be achieved with a shade cloth, an arbor, or by placing the plant near a structure that provides some shade. 4. Full Sun Exposure:
Once the plant has been acclimated to morning sun and some afternoon sun, it can be moved to a location where it receives full sun.
5. Monitor for Leaf Scorch:
Keep an eye out for signs of leaf scorch, such as yellowing or browning leaves, which indicate that the plant is receiving too much direct sunlight. If you notice these signs, provide more shade or move the plant to a less sunny location.
6. Indoor vs. Outdoor:
Indoors: Choose a bright, south-facing window or use artificial grow lights to provide sufficient light.
Outdoors: Full sun is ideal, but provide shade during the hottest parts of the day, especially in the summer.
7. Light Requirements:
Ruby Necklace requires at least 6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth and color. If you don't have a location that provides enough natural light, consider using artificial grow lights. By gradually increasing the plant's exposure to sunlight and providing shade when necessary, you can help it acclimate to full sun and regain its beautiful ruby color. Hope this helps, Happy Growing!!

@Ms.Persnickety thanks! I found a step-by-step guideline that I'm hoping will get the leaves red instead of sunburned ðĪ
