Overwintering Caladiums

What are your tips and tricks for overwintering Caladiums? (indoor version, never planted outside) Do you water them? How often?

I have a history of uhhh murdering truly dormant plants when overwintering them (looking at you in particular, cyclamen) but I'd really like this Caladium I have to survive. I was really excited when I found it (at Home Depot! For like $8!) and it thrived all summer! It's mostly cut back now, just one tiny leaf hanging on and it's in a dark-ish corner.

Hi Kate, you really don’t have to let it go dormant if it’s a indoor plant but if you do, keep it dark and don’t water it except maybe once a month. If you have a cool space (garage or basement) that works if not, use the coolest space you have and watch the water. Come Spring, you’ll have beautiful new growth 🌱🌸πŸͺ΄
Wow I’m super late to respond to this but yes I cut back on watering and put mine inside paper grocery bags (anywhere dark is good) you can stop watering completely or you can water every month or so to help keep the root ball alive so it wakes up a little more quickly next year!
Mine are sprouting right now πŸ₯Ή they survived the winter! I left mine in my pot and probably watered them lightly three times during the whole autumn/winter. More to keep the soil fresh than anything. Started to water more regularly when the weather warmed up enough. Good luck! You can also remove them from soil and store in a paper bag in a cool dark place (cupboard/garage) 🌈
Thanks! @karlv93 @DesertRainey @HoyaAddict it started to die back on its own when my house got colder as the seasons changed, so I think I'll let it rest over winter πŸ˜‚ I also need to store my dahlia bulbs (rhizomes?) so I'll put them both in a cool spot until spring.
Perfect!!! πŸ’š
@hellokatelandia It’s so funny having bulbs everywhere πŸ˜‚ I have some in my kitchen and garage haha. It also felt weird looking after a pot of β€˜dirt’ for half a year lol.
@hellokatelandia thanks for asking this as I so needed the info! I have three & was starting to panic about dormancy.
@DesertRainey @karlv93 @HoyaAddict Two of mine got root rot/corm rot. I’ve treated them with hydrogen peroxide & removed all the crap, let them dry for 24 hours. They’re still sprouting new leaves so should I chop those off & store them or repot & see what happens? πŸ€”
I’ve not had that happen, seems like they want to grow so if you have room in your house, pot β€˜β€˜em up and enjoy them all winter. If not, put them away and let the green die on its own. Lack of soil and water will take care of it. Anyone else have this happen with Caladiums?
