Hoya Sunrise Issues

The leaves on my Hoya Sunrise have softened over time, and a few have recently turned yellow.

I don’t know if this a watering issue or a lighting issue. When I do water it, the water will spill out onto the drip tray and then the plant will absorb it later. That’s why I’ve started bottom watering.

This plant gets bright indirect light for part of the morning, and then some grow light beams in the afternoon.

What could be wrong? It’s a beautiful plant, and I don’t want to lose too many leaves.

Hi Katherine πŸ‘‹
That Hoya looks really good. You know they like to dry out pretty much good between watering. And most Hoyas like to be root bound before they will bloom. When you water you might try setting it in a bowl/tray of water for about 30 minutes to fully saturate the root ball. Then let it drain so it is not sitting on water. And plenty of light. They like light. Also it is not uncommon to lose a leave every now and then.
Let us know how she grows!!
Green thumbs up!

I’m curious how old the potting mix is. Has it been in the same pot for a long time, or was it repotted recently? To pippi’s point, Hoyas do like being a bit root bound. When you say the water runs through, does it drain out almost immediately? Older potting mix can become hydrophobic, meaning it repels water instead of absorbing it evenly. If that’s what’s happening, bottom watering is a great way to fully rehydrate the root ball, but it may also be a sign the mix is ready to be refreshed.
@JasonsOasis Yes, I was worried about the soil being hydrophobic. That might be part of the issue. I was hoping it would be okay because I’ve had soil so hydrophobic that absolutely nothing would get reabsorbed, but this soil does reabsorb it. I think you’re right that I probably should repot it. Admittedly, I’m avoiding that because I’m not the best at repotting and it looks so nice right now. But I suppose I can’t avoid it forever.

I’m wondering if the leaves should be firmer after watering? They’ve been remaining soft.
@Kski1992 if the leaves have remained soft after watering, you might be dealing with underwatering, or giving them too much water/letting them sit in water too long. A repot into a better substrate would help, especially if they’re still in nursery soil.
