ID and issue
Hello plant people! 🪴 Do you know what species is this plant and what issue it might have? It’s outdoor in mostly shade. #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #identify
@EatMoreVeggies Google says Star Jasmine. If that’s correct it looks like it’s lacking some TLC and nutrients. Maybe check out its roots. Is it suffering from underwatering or overwatering? Once you get the watering straightened out some fresh soil and fertilizer would be appropriate. Go easy on the fertilizer though, very dilute to start.
Are you in the Pacific Northwest? Looks like salal from the flowers. A place I used to live at had them in the front yard. It produces an edible berry later in summer, sort of like a blueberry.
The yellowing might be root rot/too much water or lack of nutrients in the soil. Repotting with fresh potting mix should help it out. Best of luck! 🪴✨️🤞

@ballondusoleil oh yes it does look like salal! @EatMoreVeggies but definitely looks like something’s up here. What’s your watering like? And does it get any fertilizer? I’m trying to figure out why it has such large swaths of discoloration like that. 🤔 Shannon? ☺️ May we ask you for your fabulous brain here? @SuperbRaspfern
The leaves look like jasmine, but the flowers don’t? I can see both with @MariansOasis @DreamMachine. I have both plants personally. The flowers resemble more the salal; those flowers look just like salal. Jasmine can handle full sun, whereas salal is a slightly shadier plant that really likes acidic soils. Jasmine, you could rule it out pretty quickly if it doesn’t smell like jasmine, generally more fragrant at night. Salal has dark little berries that form and are edible. When you know, let us all know. ☺️
@ballondusoleil @MariansOasis @DreamMachine @Idplantthat thank you all! 🪴 it’s actually placed outside in a partly sunny/shade spot. It was a rescue and it’s recovered a bit since then, producing some new growth and red berries! However its dry spots have widened.. it’s getting water once or twice a week depending on the climate, since it’s summer (a very hot one) in Europe. As far as I know it’s not received any fertilizer recently
@EatMoreVeggies, if it’s producing berries, my guess is salal. Those plants like bright indirect sunny spaces or morning sun, afternoon shade. And give it a good citrus fertilizer. I think you’ll see it perk up even more 😉
If the dry spots are increasing, it might be worth digging it up to look at the roots. Trim off anything that's dead or rotting and repot with fresh potting medium. As mentioned by others, salal is a shade plant though morning sun is fine. It's supposed to be drought tolerant but being potted means it'll dry out faster. Once it's repotted keep an eye on the soil to check on how quickly the soil dries out so you can stay on top of watering. I have an apartment with a south-facing balcony and some of my plants need water several times a week during summer - a bit annoying but I love growing a few flowers and herbs when the weather is nice... whoops a bit of a detour there 😁... Salal berries are very tasty and a single bush can produce a lot once established. Excited for you!
Salal and Suriman are 2 totally different plants. I recommend NEVER eating any berries off of a plant unless you are 100% positive of a plants species.
Doing so can cause extreme illness and in some cases deaths.
Surman should never be eaten if not ripe they will make you extremely ill. If they are ripe and you eat the seeds, they can cause cyanide toxicity.

If you've had a heat wave anything over 90% will burn her. But since she's in the shade mostly. These are FULL sun plants I suspect she's not getting enough sun and needs to be moved. Sunburn doesn't affect bottom leaves like your plant has.
Have you seen any fruit? She should have been fruiting heavily last month. If you didn't see any or very little she definitely needs more sun to give her the strength to flower and produce fruit. A change in location should fix her in time. I would trim off the brown dead branches so she can put her energy into new growth. @DreamMachine Thanks for the tag Nadia 🩷

@SuperbRaspfern oh goodness, thank you Shannon! I believe @EatMoreVeggies is in Europe if that helps with 🆔
@SuperbRaspfern actually the berries are red and they have been produced during winter time. Now that it is summer here in Europe she’s producing some little white flowers, as little cups and not jasmine-looking.. and the last time she’s been in the sun she’s burned herself a lot. I found that a partial shade position allows her to produce new leaves as the pics of my post up here. Anyways I’ve trimmed down the dead parts and I’ll have to check the roots for sure 🤔 any other suggestion? Thanks tho! 🌸
