growing in height only

vanilla bean orchid is happy and growing rapidly, i am pleased. however, it is only growing in one direction. she’s more than tripled her height and i’ve clipped the vine to the longest stalk i have. what should i do to induce branches or growth horizontally as i think she’s a tall as reasonable. i don’t think she intends to stop in the foreseeable. advice? #VanillaOrchid
1ft to light, indirect
9” pot with drainage

Oh my goodness! She’s definitely healthy. You can get a stick or to help it.. but vanilla orchids can get get very long and very tall width wise I haven’t seen them expand that large, at least mine haven’t. They are getting taller and flowered but that’s about all. I know vanillas can be tricky to create fruit and to even flower.. so I’d say you’re doing something very right 😂😉..
@Idplantthat lol i take no credit for i think she likes the window. It’s in a 9-inch pot. that’s a lot of pot if it don’t plan on stretching out into it. should i repot into something smaller in radius and just experiment more height? I’m not holding my breath for a flower, honestly. it doesn’t get warm enough in my apartment
Orchids in general don't respond to clipping all that well. Vanila tolerates it more coz of how fast they grow [in comparison to other orchids], but it's not in their behaviour to spread horizontally. Anyways in the wild they tend to grow up, once they run out they loop over and hang down
These are vines so they dont realky grow branches or upright even. They need something to climb
I think @Araceae has some really great points! For sure, as far as potty.. technically they don’t even a pot. They are an air plant so you can mount them on a board or something.. so if your temperatures aren’t just right and pollinators may not be able to pollinate will mean you won’t vanilla beans. Jfyi with all that being said, https://hunterflytraps.com/products/fernwood-new-zealand-tree-fern-orchid-totem-twin-pack-2-2-20 to keep my vines growing up right I attached them to that, and use a bamboo stick with comes plant a. We then just use either gardening take or a zip tie, but keep those loser. Let us know how she goes! We are root’en for her!
@TheConservator you can also use sphagnum moss sticks and those are also great for vanilla climbers, I’d do that and clips to hold the branches up. I’ll get a picture tomorrow of mine, they aren’t nearly as healthy and as beautiful as yours but they are on climbers
