Hi there! I don't know for sure what's up with your tree, or even what's considered 'normal' for it. But I got curious, and did what an interested ADHD brain does and started reading.
I found this groovy site that has a fantastic article about bottle tree bonsai! I got the impression that's not your goal, but there is so much great information about the care and needs of the tree that'd be applicable.
Now my first thought is that it might need MORE water (still look out for root rot. More doesn't equal drown). They're a vascular tree, and they store water in their trunks. Ergo the typical fat trunks! So cool!
